this is funny as i thought about this recently as well.  i have to
agree that the hammer and a nail video and whole look of nis hair-wise
suits me.  when amy went short on so (i think) i was like--gross-not at
all flattering.  they seem to have come full circle as far as hair
goes.  i will say that my actual favorite hair is in the cartoon on the
back of atwli's cd case.  i read an article in some gay magazine that
the cartoons make amy look like juliette lewis and emily like morgan
fairchild.    now that's good hair!  as i stare at the drawings it's
actually a pretty accurate comparison.  have a great week--greg

now that amy and emily have left new york city, it is time for me to reflect on the tv appearances they taped while they were in the big apple.

"the ellen show": it was fun to watch ellen sing "closer to fine" with a+e as the show ended. although i hate how the network shows always cut off their songs to show the commericials or the closing credits. they also performed "perfect world".

"the today show": i missed that episode. darn!

"the view": i loved how the show pointed out that back in 1997, a+e were the first musical guests ever on "the view". they did a nice version of "perfect world".

"cbs saturday morning": the interviewer, tracy smith, pointed out how much she loved their music and how she is always singing along with the songs, often while being told to "shut up" by her friends. a+e seemed flattered. onced again, they did "perfect world" and as they were performing two other tunes, they were cut off to go to a comercial and the closing credits. it was also cute to watch them eat the dish the visiting chef was preparing.

"charlie rose": it was the longest interview they did. charlie rose pointed out that fans include the members of his show staff who were so glad a+e finally got so sit at the interview table. i get the feeling the staff told charlie about the calls and emails we fans sent asking when they would appear. nice going folks! i loved how emily pointed out how she would love to see bush defeated because of the "havoc" he was brought since being elected. you go girl! he mentioned a few of the causes amy and emily support.

"breakfast with the arts": a+e wore the exact same outfits on this show as they did when they taped "the view" show, so i gather both segments were taped the same day. amy wore a black print shirt and blue jeans and emily wore an yellow satin tour jacket over a while blouse and blue jeans. this show respected their music the most because they got to perform "perfect world", "galileo" and "heartache for everyone" in full with no interruptions. the song titles were even flashed on the screen. i wish they would do that show on the a&e network more often.

i taped all of the shows i reviewed and will prepare a copy featuring highlights of these performances if there is enough interest. please email me privately, if you'd like a copy.

hey all,
i was a member of this email group from 1999 to 2002
and have finally joined back up after a two-year
hiatus following the birth of my daughter. i was
inspired to rejoin after meeting traci (finally : )
and joey at the st. louis show saturday night.

since i just rejoined the list last night, i'm
not sure what else has been posted about the st. louis
show, but it was wonderful and amy seemed to be
feeling much better. she and emily were both amazing
and their voices were in top form. i also really
enjoyed shawn mullins ... i had never seen him live
and i was impressed.

i just wanted to pop in and say hello and i'm
really glad to be back.

have a great day!
michelle

i have to agree with you on that one.  if anything, i can see that from fill

looking at the lyrics, i can see that in there...  mainly in the
line,"you spent five years saying you'd come my way."  i'm really not
sure there's enough supporting evidence to back up that very well,
though...

i am curious about fill it up again...  "i'd like to say that it was
clear to me, love triangle geometry, but in the end it's still a
mystery, the placement of affection and the disarray..."  i've tried to
make more complicated relationship "geometry" work, and it does seem to
be mostly about the placement of affection and how easy it is to get
that into disarray when there are more than just two people involved.

i saw the posts about the show and agree with everything.  the show rocked!
tether!  "wow," is all i can say.  i went with a few friends and my 20 and 18
yo sons.  these boys listen to tool and eminem (yes, i raised them.  i don't
know why).  my oldest son went on and on about how good the concert was.  he
said he kept his eyes on amy the entire time.  of course, that was easy, since
we were about 15 feet from her the entire time.  i always sit on amy's side
whenever possible.  the only time i saw the smile leave amy's face was when they
had the technical difficulties.  i heard her say, "jesus christ! as she
strummed her unamplified guitar, illustrating to the sound crew that there was no
sound.  she was strumming it, saying, "do you hear anything?  i don't hear
anything!"  she was becoming obviously annoyed.  but other than that, she was all
smiles!  emily was smiling a lot, too, stopping only momentarily as she got
into some deep guitar rythms.  my son told me he had never seen a band so
grateful to their fans.  he said it was very obvious that the girls are the real
deal.  he already respected them for their music, but now he respects them for the
wonderful people they are as well.  both my sons were really impressed with
how the audience sang along so much.  the singing in st. louis was particularly
great that night.  that's my 2 cents.  **happy**

i dont know what the reviewer is talking about. maybe amy suggested as much
in an interview, if the advocate has done one.

i dont hear a triangle. but i also dont hear the jb break up. think that's
dairy queen.

heartache seems to be a tale of some type of unrequited love. "i spent five
years waiting"... "i spent two saying give me a chance..."

or a tale of getting toyed with by someone, but pressing ahead and keeping
the faith anyway.  "i'll give you six more weeks..." which is a great line
after saying you've already waited five years.

there's also that line about realizing it's just a fantasy.

i think "heartache..." is also about the break up with jennifer
baumgardner.  well, maybe more about the circumstances leading to the
break up.  the long distance thing was a big factor in their break up
and i recall amy once saying in an interview that she'd never move out
of georgia for a relationship.  but that's just my interpretation.

found this review in the kamazaoo gazette.  unfortunately, i was unable to get tickets (although i tried daily in vain).  the concert was sold out for weeks. the review is very positive, a little "light" in the depth department, though.  wish i could have been there.

indigo girls soothe, stir sell-out crowd at state theatre

friday, march 19, 2004

by mark wedel
special to the gazette

the indigo girls are introspective, a little bit soothing, a little bit stirring. maybe a bit subversive.

amy ray and emily saliers have been at it since the mid-'80s, for a long enough time that they've developed their own library of diverse sounds and themes.

"how long 'til my soul gets it right?" they asked the adoring crowd at the sold-out state theatre thursday night.

this was "galileo," one of many of the girls' songs that stands as the epitome of their style -- introspective lyrics on the quest for inner peace, sung in harmony, driven by stirring strums on acoustic strings.

how long? well, they can keep trying forever as far as their fans are concerned. thursday night ray and saliers, backed by clare kenny (bass), carol isaacs (keyboards) and brady blade (drums), brought out a few of the styles they've tried and succeeded at over a lengthy career. the key to their longevity is the ability to cover new ground while still staying the indigo girls.

"galileo," "kid fears" and "closer to fine" are still the crowd favorites, with the latter causing all in the audience to stand and sing at the top of their glorious lungs.

but concert opener "tether," from the new "all that we let in" (sony), was pure, loud southern rock with a muscular sound, delivering anti-war lyrics: "do we tether the hawk, or do we tether the dove?" "heartache for everyone" was upbeat ska sounding as if inspired by late-'70s british new wave, led by ray singing and thrashing at an electric guitar, which caused a large clot of fans to go into delirious dancing at the edge of the stage.

for the last song before the encore, "go," from 1999's "come on now social," they were sounding a bit like neil young and crazy horse, with ferocious feedbacking from the guitars, again led by ray; if you forget who is who, remember, saliers is a little bit folky, ray is a little bit rock 'n' roll.

for those just familiar with the girls' early hits, the sweet harmonic folk-pop that you might expect was also there in newer songs, but the wistfulness now is more likely to have been replaced with a little bite. saliers' gentle folk voice drew cheers from the crowd with the title track of "all that we let in," a folk-pop song that could sound just right on adult contemporary radio, with lyrics like, "one day those toughies will be withered up and bent/the father, son, the holy warriors and the president." well, that's not getting on any clear channel station.

the crowd cheered at the political themes that seemed to stick out, maybe because of the anniversary of the start of the iraq war, but saliers and ray didn't do any between-song preaching. but it was love -- with maybe a bit of the recent politics surrounding even that subject -- that moved the crowd the most. cheers greeted "power of two," from 1994's "swamp ophelia." halfway into the song, the duo stopped singing and let the audience take over, filling the theater with mostly female voices singing of "adding up the total of a love that's true/multiply life by the power of two."

opener shawn mullins showed that he was still a vibrant act, even if he's not getting on the radio these days. mullins managed to get a hit in 1998 with "lullaby," from his "soul's core" album.

his solo singer/songwriter-with-guitar style is a bit like bruce cockburn or steve earl, mainly due to mullins' substantial voice and story-telling lyrics. but unlike those two, mullins delves into themes that tend more toward the light with very little darkness. "everything's gonna be all right," is the optimistic refrain of "lullaby." he may have inadvertently set up this comparison when he also sang earl's "copperhead road," which tells of a vietnam vet having flashbacks as dea choppers fly over his pot patch.

so i've been reading all the reviews of atwli and about amy & emily's
songwriting abilities.  here's my 2 cents

i just love atwli.  yes there are some stronger songs and some not so strong
songs (i won't call them weaker).  i personally  tend to listen to music for
the sound/music first, the voices then the words.  i'm not sure i have a
favorite on this cd, but there are parts of fill it up again that i could
listen to over and over, not so much for the words, but the tune and counter
melody as a & e sing, as well as the rhythm (hole in my sky, my sky, my
sky...).  i think perfect world has some of the same qualities.  tether
makes me want to put in laramie right after.  same kind of songs.  the type
that you kind of need to feel inside you and make yourself stop singing
along with so you can feel it.  tom & mike, you were talking about rem - for
me the cash brothers have that ultimate "feel inside you" kind of song.   go
to amazon.com and listen to the download of "nebraska" on their how was
tomorrow cd.  give it a good listen to a couple of times.  it's mezmerizing.
everyone else can go there too :)

the woowoo's on atwli.... i don't remember who didn't like them.  for me,
emily's voice has just gotten more beautiful over the years, and it's not
always the words that hit me about a song.  honestly half the time i'm not
really sure what they're talking about anyway.  but just listening to e sing
puts me in a great place.  heck, she could be singing the dictionary or
phone book and i'd be happy.  she's just got such a sweet clear voice.  amy
has such passion in her voice.  i wish i could sing like her.  it's got to
be amazing to put your all emotion into your voice like that.  well, i can
do that  but it sounds nothing like amy, more like nails on a chalkboard or
something like that.

anywho...that's my take on atwli and songwriting.  now for the
hairstyles....nothing beats amy's hair  when she's singing blood & fire on
the video.....

peace,
jen

at the recent rock and roll hall of fame my favorite
man-guy singer jackson browne was inducted by bruce

and good looking jackson was and said:

i thought this was cute.

i think we should start lobbying now for the indigo
girls' induction into the rock and roll hall of fame!
it will probably be a struggle, since they get
virtually no radio airplay, have not sold 50 million
albums and they're queer.

on the other hand, they have as loyal a fanbase as
anyone could hope for, their music is enduring and
they are generally well-respected within the musical
community itself for their honesty, friendliness and
musicianship.

let's not forget their social proclivities either!

i do not really know who to lobby or how to go about
it, but i think it is worth a try.

anyone else with me?

hey everyone,

imagine my surprise last week when i found a locally pressed version
of "all that we let in" in a major record store.  given that "become
you" was never released here, i'd kind of figured that sony australia
had pretty much forgotten about the girls.

anyway, it appears to be the edition with the bonus cd (dairy queen,
fill it up again, come on home, perfect world, galileo + kid fears).
all aussies should get out there and buy it, and show sony that the
girls still have a fanbase over here.  and maybe one day they'll tour
here again...

cheers,
sherlyn

my favorite amy hair is the shaming of the sun hair. not the yellow highlight era of cons!

i actually asked amy about her thoughts on deah when she did that mother jones online chat thing. she responded that (i'm paraphrasing cause i really don't remember)she's learned a lot about accepting death from different native groups, i think and...i don't know, she might have said soemthing about going through her grandmother's death but i may have read that elsewhere. i got the impression that she has gotten a little more comfortable with mortality as she's gotten older. the chat might still be online in the mother jones archives.

isn't 25 years the amount of time a band or person has to be in the public

this is not amazon.com and it isn't an affiliate in any way shape or

very good in my oppinion, they're in
minneapolis and i try to get out there when
i can....that's where i got the girlfriends

if it's not on the website....i'm sure you can
get their email or phone number. i'd advise
you to use the phone number because they are
not always good with checking their email.

i was telling susan burk about homoagogo and ithought
i'd post this to the whole list in case some other
folks want to check it out.

homo a gogo is a self described "queer underground
music and film festival" that is taking place in
olympia, washington on august 3-8, 2004. the big news
is that team dresch is doing a one time reunion show
as part of the festival. reportedly their show takes
place on saturday, august 7. the team dresch lineup is
jody, kaia and donna, with marci and melissa sharing
drumming duties. the butchies are also playing at the
festival. the website (http://www.homoagogo.com) has
other confirmed artists.

for those folks who don't know who team dresch is,
they are a pioneer dyke punk band. kaia wilson was a
member before she formed the butchies with melissa.

i went to the last homo a gogo and had a blast. true,
at 39 i was old enough to have given birth to a lot of
the attendees! but i still had a great time soaking in
the music and general queer vibe of the town. i can't
go this year (sob!).

one last thing: i don't even know if tix are on sale
yet, but if anyone wants to see team dresch i'd keep
my eye on the website to get them as soon as they go
on sale. there's been buzz building on websites about
this show, and although the captitol theater is fairly
big i think it will sell out rather quickly.

hey y'all,

i bought two michelle malone tix for friday night at eddie's, but then ended up getting a table with some friends instead.  i am looking to sell the two tickets.  eddie's attic does it guestlist style -- no paper tickets.  i'd have to call eddie's and give them your name to put on the guestlist instead of mine.

you could just pay me for the tickets at the show.  (ig fans are honest)  i will be late since i am coming from sugarland.

is anyone interested?

i think they were $10 each.  not sure on the service charge, but it doesn't matter.  i'm selling them for $10 each.

email me before 9pm pst.  i am leaving for atlanta tonight. if after that, please call my cell and (if necessary) leave a message.  415-307-2074

want to let you know that the girls have opened up 4/23/04 at the vic
theatre.  i was, in vain, trying to get tickets for the kalamazoo show, but was
unable to secure decent to not offensively lame tickets. i digress, was able to get
orchestra level for the chicago (auditorium theatre) show on 4/24/04.  great
seats.  (they opened them up today.)  so, kind friends, it does pay to be
diligent.   this is my 15 year old daughter's first indigo girls' concert...i
can't wait!  especially since she is such a theatre/voice maven...oh god, i
restrain myself from telling y'all about her talents...because it's only personal

ideas...hopefully, you understand what i mean.

anyway, can't wait!  fyi ~ i went to hotwire, and was able to secure the
hliton (which looks to be less than one quarter (1/4) of the average price of the
venue, for $ 87.00, (+ taxes, etc.).  good deal, when you are traveling in
chicago!

my atwli cd is en route to a think tank for toyota.  when i was heading home
tonight, i was listening (enthusiastically) to atwli, and my cd clicked out.
never to provide music again.  it ate my favorite new cd!  damn you, car!
what may i do to promote you!

cute picture.
http://www.accessatlanta.com/news/content/music/0304/25indigogirls.html

nobody wanted to wait 2 1/2 years to restage "shed your skin," the acclaimed collaboration between the indigo girls and the atlanta ballet. not the fans, not the indigos, not the ballet company.

but that's how long it's taken to reassemble the show, which had one memorable run in october 2001.

"everyone wanted to do it again, but it was just trying to schedule our dancers and the fox theatre and the indigo girls' schedule, find a window where we could make everything come together," said atlanta ballet spokeswoman tricia ekholm.

in "shed your skin," the indigos - local singer-songwriters amy ray and emily saliers - perform seven of their songs, none of them big hits - "shed your skin," "least complicated," "touch me fall," "caramia," "scooter boys," "ghost" and "everything in its own time" - with choreography by margo sappington. the indigos perform on a platform with their amps and equipment, whi le the dancers are on the fox stage. in general, the dances evoke the mood and feel of the songs rather than trying to interpret the lyrics literally.

when "shed your skin" debuted in 2001, atlanta journal-constitution critic julia bookman called it "gutsy, abstract rock ballet."

"unbridled energy burns," she wrote. "abandon rules. soul-searching and creative self-expression run rampant."

two dances will open the show - george balanchine's "allegro brilliante," set to tchaikovsky's concerto no. 3, and david parson's "caught."

- the 411: $20-$66. 7:30 p.m. tonight; 8 p.m. friday; 2 and 8 p.m. saturday; 2 and 7 p.m. sunday. fox theatre, 660 peachtree st. n.e., midtown. 404-249-6400, www.atlantaballet.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

i might be able to score a few issues of the new girlfriends magazine with amy and emily and i might be willing to send them to the girlfriends magazine deprived ig fans out there! :)

if i get my hands on more than one copy, i let you know.

it was a joke! and i am interested in the article.

i also think it's funny that amy is singing breakup
songs about jb and she's got a new one waiting home
for her. i suppose that's part of being a musician's
significant other: watching them sing songs on stage
about how someone else broke their heart. or whatever
it is she sings about jb.

hey y'all,
sorry for the vligc but, you may remember my post some time ago about making ig compilations for several people at work.  anyway, a coworker has a 3 year daughter who's becoming quite the fan, so much so that the daughter is picking up on some of the lyrics and singing them.  on a recent car ride, the mother noticed the little girl singing "janny wenner" and the "woo-hoo's" during lucystoners!!!  my coworker said she has to skip past the last chorus now, not wanting to hear the word boner come out of her daughter's mouth in church, or some other inappropriate moment :-)  this is unfortunate, she says, because that last chorus is when the song really starts rocking!  i would have to agree.
i got a big kick out of that, thought you all might as well.  take care, have a great weekend.
peace,
joey

bad news first......for those outside of mn
who are interested in what goes on here....
there is legislation about the issue thanks
to the f#%$&^(  republicans...it would have
amended the state constitution to redefine marriage as being between a
man and a woman. and it would have banned gay marriages....it  passed
wit flying colors in the house, and with the support of 2000 or so
narrow homophobic boneheads with signs and banners.....but the good
news.....

glbt and supporters showed up with just as many  people and it failed in
the senate committee today!!!

this isn't  the end , politicians are gonna try and get the amendment
onto the floor via the
backroom deal approach.

but there is certainly a big dent in their plans.

hi everyone,

for those who don't know, the date for 6/17 in nj is incorrect. it says
asbury park at the starland ballroom. however, the starland is not in nj.
it's in sayreville. i just checked the starland website and the girls are
playing there. so, they will not be in asbury park--which is a shame cuz i
could walk to the show--but in sayreville at the starland.

yea! i can see a show this tour!

um...  it's a nice thought, but the commute from spokane wa to any of
those shows would be hellish for both my schedule and my pocketbook.
i've been writing to rcam and local music venues trying to get ig to
come to spokane on some leg of their tour, so hopefully i will get to
see them without having to cross the great plains and the mississippi
river to do so.

hi everyone,
i'm new to the list so i apologize if this has been brought up before.  i
love singing along to the ig of course but can't play a guitar for my life.  i
was wondering if any of you guitarists out there have ever recorded the songs
without voice just to practice the harmonies and stuff while singing with
friends.  of course i love the tapes of the girls singing but i think an
instrumental to paractice with could be fun for us singers out there.  would any of you
guitarist, banjo players, pianists etc. out there be interested in making up a
tape like this?  reply privately if you prefer.  thanks so much :)
