hey--i recently ordered sugarland's cd because i live for kristen hall
and had no idea she had even joined another band.  anyway, 10 days
passed and the cd never arrived.  i contacted the sugarland people and
they promptly mailed me another cd.  turns out the original got lost
but eventually found it's way to my mailbox.  so now i have two and the
sugarland folks were kind enough to ask that i just share the music
with others as opposed to returning one.  so i am offering up the cd to
the first person who responds.  it's much more country than i expected
and much less kristen than i expected.  but i like it nonetheless.  all
i ask is that whoever wants the free cd mail me a sase so i can send it
to you.  i'll work out the details with whoever's interested.  thanks
and back to your regular ig tour dates!

hi all,

for anyone like me who enjoys discovering wonderful music, i wanted to let
you know about judy small, who's about to start a bit of a us tour on april
16.  judy's a really talented australian singer/songwriter who sings all
sorts of stuff, but has a focus on glbt, feminist, and justice issues.
i've never actually been able to get to one of her shows, but i've heard
them on radio and she's extremely entertaining.  definitely check her out
if you can!

if you want to read more about her or hear samples of some of her music,
she's got a site at:

cheers,
amanda.

i am so mad they killed kerry's gf. this show is just going right down the
tubes. furthermore, you know they had legal documents drawn up. i mean,
it's kerry. every ten minutes she's on about lawsuits and whatnot.

kerry's character was really good for awhile, an amazing balance between a
career-hungry dragon lady and a vulerable, caring woman, but lately it's
been nothing but shrill screeching and insanity. and now they kill off her
gf, setting the stage for this implausible custody battle. didn't we
already do this with benton, anyway? this sucks.

my thoughts too, i actually knew some of the producers and a couple extras
(remember the guy who was non-verbal and knew like 7 languages in early 98
- that was my friend neil as a guest star - he is uber cool)

i dunno why they are doing the custody battle - but i totally am opposed to
a straight able bodied actor playing a disabled lesbian - when the role was
never offered to equally (and possibly more talented) disabled actress. i
know people who were supposed to try out for her role for the pilot.

i do know that anthony edwards (greene - who died a long time ago on the
show) is really well versed in disablity issues...maybe it is trying to be
current....

i stopped watching a bit after carter broke up with abby - c'mon - you knew
it could have worked itself out...

ok - so i met most of these people at a conference in la when i was still
in college - really - i am not some uber hollywood type.

well that would mean no gay actor should be allowed to play a straight
role. do you want to go there, michael?

laura innes is incredibly talented.

abby and carter had zero chemistry. they were like brother and sister. i

no, it wouldn't mean that at all.  you're drawing a completely inaccurate
analogy.

the point, which is clearly demonstrated in mike's e-mail (maybe you should
give the bit you quoted another read), is that the industry excludes actors
with disabilities.  if the way the industry regards people with
disabilities wasn't such a serious issue, it'd be funny.  i mean, they're
very happy to exploit the people with disabilities theme - if you do a
movie about a person with a disability, your chances of getting an oscar go
through the roof - but the chances of an actor with a disability getting a
high profile role, or any role for that matter, are next to none.  i'll bet
you can name a dozen movies about people with disabilities with absolutely
no effort, but how many actors with disabilities can you name?

think they meant to make kerry gay when they cast her, that didn't happen
til season 7 or so. the disabled point is valid, that's why i didn't
reference it in my answer.

hi all,

so this morning i'm watching "gina gershon: rocked" which is a documentary about the movie gina made, "prey for rock and roll", in which she portrays being in a punk band in la. she went on tour briefly to support the movie-- sang and played guitar-- and there's a scene in the documentary where they are playing at the house of blues and the documentray guy is interviewing people as they go in. on of the quick interviews on the street is our very own emily, with some unidentified woman (maybe her girlfriend?)...emily says "i don't know, she's just got a vibe....she's got a good vibe" (referring to gina).

cute.

hey jen
we got 3 rd row section a, seats 8 & 9. i love the sound at this place, but am not crazy about how the venue is set up. first off if you are in the first row, the wall to the stage is a 6 ft concrete block, and the way the stage is set up it is so long, that if your more than a quater of a way into the row you are past the stage, so at seats 8 & 9 we are right where the stage ends, and the row continues to i think seats 14 & 15. but on a more positive note, the last show at meadowbrook ranks in my top 5 ig shows of all time, so i am excited for this one as well! wooo hooo!

those polls are such bullshit! i have already voted against it 15 times, so do they count every vote ( i know our real government doesn"t but this one probably does)when that poll first came out the yeas were over whelming the nays, but now it seems the numbers have changed, so it would be possible to have some jackass bible thumper with nothing better to do all day, than vote on random polls just to make the #'s shift. more fule for their fire , i suppose!

y'all,

moveon.org is doing a "biggest bake sale ever" event to raise money for the
kerry campaign, which i think is pretty cool. i went to their event lookup
thingo to see what was going on near me:

http://action.moveonpac.org/bakesale/index.html

and then i looked up my parents (who still live in the bay area) and one of the
events listed was a booksigning with amy goodman of democracy now. i thought
i'd mention it to the list, since i know a lot of people on here are fans of
hers. (for those interested, the zip code is 94306.) it's also a pretty neato
idea in general, and worth a look even for those lacking interest in or
proximity to amy goodman specifically.

and, um... okay, i have no igc. except that when i mentioned to my advisor that
i'd spent my spring break in atlanta going to the ig/ballet thingo, he got all
excited because he's friends with don saliers (!) but only in that colleague-y,
see-you-at-conferences kind of way.

mandy,
who might have to start showing up at conferences as well as baking things

if this is the same event that's listed on sonia of disappear fear's
site (april 25 in washington dc) then i believe that cnn will be
covering it.  i don't have any more information than that though.

yeah - c-span covers anything with a permit on the mall, so i cant see it
not being covered. if i get cash, i might go down with some maine folk, get
credentials and videotape the march for an indymedia type release - but
right now i have no idea how i'd get down there and i am not signing for
credentials i wont use.

hey kind friends~

sorry for the old thread and virtual nigc, but i would
*love* to hear ig's do "give a (wo)man a home",
written by ben harper, as performed by the blind boys
of alabama.

the harmonies (i estimate) would be spectacular!

i recommend listening to the blind boys of alabama if
you are unfamiliar with them :)

"have you ever lost your way
have you ever feared another day
have you ever misplaced your mind
watching this world leave you behind...

in a world that is unwhole
you got to fight just to keep your soul
some would rather give than receive
some would rather give up before they believe"

just awesome stuff!

a few years back i suggested that the ig's should
perform some reggae songs and most folks thought i was
wacked :(

just a few months later i saw amy do a solo of
redemption song by bob marley and it was incredible!

a little gospel would not hurt the girls' a bit!

peace and harmony~

amazon.com is *amazing* that way. no fooling.

the exception to the rulers: exposing oily politicians, war profiteers, and the
media that love them
by amy goodman, david goodman

from publishers weekly
journalist and radio host goodman brings her hard-hitting, no-holds-barred
brand of reporting to an array of human rights, government accountability and
media responsibility issues, and the result is bracing and timely. goodman
isn't about to let anyone slide by with easy explanations, not even then
president clinton when he called in on her daily pacifica news show. and she is
fierce and tireless in her commitment to dig behind official versions of the
facts to get to very different stories. her analysis of iraq war contracts won
by certain key bush campaign donors will open many eyes, not only with its neat
comparison of donation amount with contract value but also with its bold
presentation of "crony connections." a gadfly's life in these turbulent times
is neither restful nor boring, and goodman's perspective on events like
genocidal massacres in east timor and mainstream coverage of the jessica lynch
rescue is both important and alarming. instances in which newspapers like the
new york times and the washington post have published stories based on leaked
reports from unnamed government sources only to have to retract the stories
later as being unfounded allow goodman to argue that sophisticated news
management techniques of spin, disinformation and controlled access to sources
are undermining the reliability of media reporting. how, she asks, could
journalists "embedded" with u.s. troops in iraq be objective reporters of all
that was occurring there, and whose interests were being served? these and
other provocative questions power goodman's stirring call for a democratic
media serving a democratic society.

hey, folks, apologies for any cross-postings, and i know that a lot of you
probably already know about this, but i wanted to tout the upcoming susquehanna
music festival, may 7-9, darlington, md. among the many folks performing is a
friend of mine in baltimore named sarah pinsker, so i promised to her that i'd
give the festival a little pub. there are a ton of other great folks, as
well, including katryna and nerissa nields, sonia, we're about 9, and on and on.
the web site is www.smaf.info.

just to add onto what deb said about smaf - it's a great festival and it is
in it's fourth year now.  you can camp there is you want and the music is
great.  you are sure to discover some musicians that you haven't heard of -
perhaps you have never heard of relative sight, wishing chair, sloan
wainwright, aztec 2-step or the wyrd sisters from canada.  the place is
packed.

we have 4 stages if it doesn't rain and if it does rain there are plenty of
indoor stages.  if you have kids it is a very kid friendly place with
activities for the kids.  there is food and other vendors.

it's very laid back.  25 minutes from baltimore!  very nice drive from
philly or dc or anywhere really.

also - the price is right!!!

can't say enough about it -

i want to second deb's comments.  sarah pinsker is a great up-and-coming
songwriter and performer.  i've had the pleasure of seeing her live a few
times, and it is a treat.  she's also been a long-time member (now lurker, if
she still has the time) of this mailing list.  she was also my first on-air
interview/performance when i was doing college radio in virginia several years
ago.  not too many people would stay up until 4am to do a radio spot.

the music festival is worth checking out.  although i have not been there, some
friends of mine who performed there in the past (wishing chair) gave good
reviews.  it looks like they'll be there again this year, so check them out!
(also be sure to see commonbond!  my friends love amy carol webb, so check her
out, too.)

on a completely non-music note, although related to the festival, i also want to
say that my favorite cup to drink from at my friends' house is the one they got
from the festival.  it's green plastic with a handle and the logo.  ;)

forgive my curiosity but how does that work, exactly?

if you have already won an auction, you are obligated to pay. if the auction

not that i think you'll have any problem finding takers for tickets to a
sold out show. they just might not be from this list...

______________

the indigo girls amy ray and emily saliers are happy
to do their part in the struggle for same-sex marriage
rights. but that doesn t include playing those
weddings.

oh my god, that would be depressing i
think,  muses saliers regarding the prospect of a
wedding singer career.  we know a few  80s songs i
think, but it s not gonna happen. no  you light up my
life.  no way.

besides, the atlanta-based girls are busy
touring with their own new album, all that we let in
(epic). last we heard from the indigos was 2002 s
become you, whose producer, peter collins, and
musicians carol isaacs, clare kenny and brady blade,
they reunited with at georgia s sound tree studios.
all that ...  is a lively, energized album filled with
indigo aural hallmarks like rich dueling guitars,
soulful keyboards, and ray/saliers  melodious vocal
harmonies. it s a bridge between the acoustic/folky
become you and 2000 s alt-rock tinged come on now
social.  come on was so layered, has so much stuff on
it,  saliers notes.  such a fun album to me, it might
be my favorite. this one s more organic to me across
the board, although there s electric guitar on it ...
.  and don t worry, birkenstock set there are acoustic
ballads in the mix, too.

the album s 11 songs were almost evenly split
writing-wise: five by ray, six by saliers.  a lot of
[our songs ] themes crossed over,  saliers shares.
politics and social causes are going to emerge, so we
have some thematic similarities. we also have some
straight-up love songs. it s not a concept album.

however, a story does bond the album
together: one illustrated by comic book legend jaime
hernandez (whose love & rockets comic series features
queer characters). ray, a big comics fan, asked
hernandez to illustrate the album s cover/interior
booklet, and he agreed.  it s the best packaging we ve
ever had and a great storyline,  saliers gushes.  very
proud of it.

         saliers describes the strange hernandez-drawn
story, which involves a woman who plants statues from
outer space in the desert, as  a metaphor for the
beautiful miracles the universe can provide. if we
keep our minds open to it and through hard work,
diligence and reflection, it s a profound experience.
the cover art is this woman [balancing] on a pipe but
to me it is a balance between nature and the
destruction of nature. there are a lot of things going
on there. very spiritual.

as for the songs, ray s love for reggae, ska
and the clash inspired the bouncy, reggae-spiced
heartache for everyone.  does ray also appreciate the
reggae/ska staple of  da herb?  (as in marijuana herb,
of course.)  the herb? i don t know actually,  saliers
laughs.  i don t know if she loves the herb.  amy, do
you love the herb?  i ve never asked her.

of the story and meaning behind the album s
gentle title song, saliers proffers  it s very
personal but also universal. it talks about the
details of life meeting, about planets falling and
exploding. it s an anti-war song. and it talks about
things that have actually happened in my life with
friends. in the end there s the beauty and terror of
life, they work hand in hand it can be painful.

more pain can be found in the catchy first
track,  fill it up again,  a failed relationship story
in the disguise of an upbeat pop ditty.
interestingly, saliers has enjoyed a very healthy
relationship with a girlfriend for 10 years now, so
how does she keep coming up with yarns of unhappy,
dysfunctional ones?  as a writer your eyes and ears
are open all the time, you observe people and other
relationships,  she explains.  you have empathy and i
think a lot about what it would be like to be in
certain situations. i watch a lot of films and read a
lot of literature, so i pick up a lot of dysfunction.
the movie monster that s such a painful story. i ve
seen it a couple of times ... it blew me away. talk
about dysfunctional and the worst painful relationship
situation you can imagine that s the film to see. but
bad relationships are all around us.

conversely,  free in you  expresses the
delectation of her own love life. its lyrics include:
love is like breathing when it s true/ and i m free
in you.   the hallmark sentiment,  saliers admits with
amusement.  i m just loving and romantic. always.
she s a really wonderful person, i like her
personality; she s always interesting to me. we have a
lot of respect for each other. and we learn how to
deal with being apart a lot because i travel all the
time and we have enough independence to bring to the
table to keep our relationship interesting. i found
the right person and i m very fortunate. but we work
at it. you have to work at any relationship.

like her longtime friendship and professional
collaboration with ray. the indigo girls  seeds were
first sowed in a decatur, ga., elementary school. by
1981, the childhood friends laid down their first
tracks and experimentally dubbed themselves  the
b-band  and, more austerely,  saliers and ray.  the
indigo girls officially came to be in 1985. their
eponymous major label debut hit the racks in 1989, and
over the course of nine albums they won a grammy,
multiple glamas, and earned double platinum status.

the lesbians with acoustic guitars shifted
gears and went electric with a bunch of talented
friends on 2000 s come on now social, which they
recorded in london with producer john reynolds, sinead
o connor s backing band ghostland, and guests like
joan osborne, sheryl crow, me shell ndegeocello, and
kate schellenbach of luscious jackson. asked who she d
like to have guest star at some point in the future,
saliers says stevie wonder ranks high. madonna is also
welcome and  i wouldn t mind singing with mary j.
blige. she can sing the whole track, actually  i ll
sing backup.

ray also runs a record label, daemon records,
and released a 2001 solo album, stag. a second solo
album may follow, while saliers is considering a debut
solo effort as well before the next recorded indigo
effort commences. but first, an album of rarities
(largely suggested by fans) will be released.

while their sound has evolved over the years,
one thing that remains 100% consistent is the indigo
girls  commitment to political activism in music and
life (voter registration booths may be present at
their tour venues). lately, that has entailed fighting
amendments to both state and the country s
constitutions that would disallow same-sex marriage or
partnership benefits.

bush would be the first president of the
u.s. to amend the constitution in a way that is
exclusive rather than inclusive,  saliers reflects.
he needs to stop. what a legacy he s dug already. the
religious right does not control this country; it does
not reflect the way most people feel spiritually. in
georgia a bill was introduced to ban gay marriage. the
house just voted against it and they asked for a
revote. so there was a rally [in atlanta] i went to
last week and there were all sorts of clergy
[protesting] against the amendment, in support of the
gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender community. it s
very uplifting to see that there are other sides and
that the christian right doesn t speak for all people
of faith. that was encouraging.

saliers encourages  every known gay person in
the public eye to take a stand  and fight for marriage
rights.  i d like all fellow gay and gay-supportive
public figures and celebrities to speak up against the
antigay amendments ... . they have to. kudos to rosie!
i wish amy and i had a more powerful voice in pop
culture consciousness because it s just so important
that people realize we need to have our civil rights.

as for whether saliers herself plans to get
hitched is a more personal, private issue, she
insists.  if my partner and i want to we will and if
not we won t,  she shares.  i wouldn t get married
just to celebrate having won the right. i m fighting
for a civil right for all who want get married, but
not everybody does and i respect that as well. i will
stay in this fight until the end. if my life depends
on it.

especially if the  weapons  are vegetarian-friendly:
i wouldn t take up arms,  she insists.  i m not a
violent person. but tofu ham i might lob a big ol
thing of tofu ham at the white house. i might be
willing to be arrested with my block of tofu ham.
