although the ig website isn't listing it yet, the milwaukee
journal-sentinel and the summerfest website have announced that ig will
play the big backyard stage at summerfest on july 4th. the start time
hasn't been announced, but headliners typically start late - like 10ish.

i'm sure lifeblood will be on there, as will finlandia. i'd bet against high horse though. emily has said on numerous occasions that she's not that fond of the lyrics she wrote.
since i'm taking stabs in the dark, i'd imagine that (as long as they can get the rights), american tune and mona lisas will also be on there.
personally i'd like to hear songs from any studio sessions that just didn't get used. winthrop, winthrop, winthrop.
i'd also love to hear different arrangements that were eventually canned - along the lines of the alternate versions of ghost and lwcty from the coffee house sessions.
i'd imagine that anybody who has either the killer b-sides compilations or the early recordings compilations are going to wind up with some duplicates...

heartily agreed! i gave her cd to a ton of folks for christmas last
year. those of us who are a little more "worldly" (older!) will recognize the
name of one of the producers, betty wright, who had a hit song in the early
'70s, called "clean-up woman."

yeah, the show was two days ago, but i'm still recovering. the carpenter
center was a bit more mellow than their show at the norva, but still a good time.
and, no, i don't have the exact setlist, but they opened with yield, and also
played the following, in no particular order (i'm sure i'm leaving something
out): perfect world, collecting you, deconstruction, romeo & juliet,
chickenman/bitterroot, get out the map, dairy queen, all that we let in, starkville,
shame on you, let it be me (dedicated to dubya), galileo & kid fears and closer
to fine (with shawn mullins) as the encores (he's no michael stipe, but he was
ok--his voice was a little too low to do kid fears). i know i'm leaving
something out, but i didn't take close notes. the highlight of the evening was
during closer to fine when two girls got up onstage to dance (well away from a&e)
and a (rather elderly) security guard took it upon himself to police the joint
by walking in front of the girls to "take them down." sulli told us afterward
(that's right--we talked to her--see below) that she thought it was funny. and
amy laughed during the song.
also, for those who were unable to get autographed cd booklets from sony,
they were selling them at the show (with the cd, of course) for $15. well worth
it.
but . . . after the show, we waited a mere fifteen or twenty minutes outside
by the bus until amy and emily appeared to sign autographs and talk to the
twenty or so folks waiting for them. both were generous with their pens, but
declined photos (until the last minute). we were unable to get a photo with the
girls, but sulli was hanging around after the girls were whisked off to their
hotel and indulged us with photos and conversation. got some photos of the show
and sulli (hopefully they'll turn out well--will post). if anyone was there
and recorded the show, we'd love to have a copy. will provide b&p or trades.
have a good night!!

i second jason's sentiments re: winthrop. i'll be so disappointed if this fabulous, moving song by emily doesn't make it on to the rarities record. i have speculated that one reason she doesn't sing it anymore is because of the loss of lives in 9/11. anyone else wonder about that ? (for those of you who haven't heard it, there is a lot of airplane imagery in the song owing to the fact that winthrop, ma. is a place that planes fly over as they leave boston). apparently, emily has a good friend there, and she sits on the friend's porch when she visits and watches the planes leave. there are a few pivotal lines about planes leaving and 'someone's never coming back'.
i heartily second the vote for high horse too. emily was playing it again a few years back-- i distinctly remember having it on a boot from...maybe, atlanta pride in 1999? not sure right now, but i know it wasn't too long ago. didn't she play it with hash? or some other crazy-sounding name for a group of people she played with?
okay, i'm sure all the choices for the rarity album have been made...but it is fun to speculate!
happy friday

interesting point. last fall, they came here to colorado. the
boulder/denver area has always been one of their strongest markets, largely thanks to
support from kbco. they did a show at the denver fillmore (fanatical, standing ga
crowd) one night and a show at a theater in co springs a few days later.
at the denver show, the crowd knew pretty much every word to every song.
denver/boulder ig shows are like that. it's great. in co springs (where they
had never played before), the crowd sat the entire time and was pretty clueless.
(and, the place didn't even sell out!)
much to my surprise, the co springs show was actually the better of the two.
i, too, found myself thinking that they were working harder to impress the
non-believers. me, i'm just glad i went to both. and while i'm disappointed
that they think they can't sell red rocks (not true, imo), i'm delighted that
i'm getting four, count 'em four colorado shows. four shows, no long car trips,
no airplanes. score.
lauren
anna, aka creechal@spamcop.net writes:
i think that when amy & emily have a really responsive crowd, like they are
used
to these days, they don't work as hard on stage 'cause they know we'll love
just about anything they do. while i can appreciate the relief that must give
them on a hard touring schedule, i also sometimes feel a little bit cheated as
an audience member. i want them to work for my attention and to work for that
connection with the crowd every time i see them. when that happens, i feel
like i got a real performance for my $30-$75 ticket. frankly, those shows
have
been a minority in my indigo girls concert attending experience.

greetings everyone!
i haven't posted to the list in a very long time, although i was once a
very regular poster. i suddenly realized the other day that i've been on
this list since 1992, when i was still a student. 12 freaking years! (yes
young ones, this list and the internet did exist in 1992 and earlier.) i
know many of you have been around just as long or longer.
as a special gift to some of you who have been on this list for a decade
or more, but who are also tech savvy, i am offering a soundboard quality
cd that i recorded of last night's (april 29th) show from merlefest 2004.
i've made a cd image file (.nrg format, 605 mb) of the cd i created from
last night's one hour set. all you have to do is download it from me and
burn it to cd, assuming your burning software can burn .nrg image files.
the file is big, so broadband is recommended.
i've already split the tracks and did the necessary fade-in at the
beginning of the concert and fade-out at the end of the concert. i
recorded the show in pcm 44.1 khz, 16 bit stereo, then burned directly to
cd after placing the track markers in their proper places, so it's
excellent quality. i could have split things up into .mp3 files to make
downloading easier, but i didn't want to lose the quality of the
recording.
the catch to finding out where you can get this image file is that (1) you
have to prove to me that you were on this list back in the old days by
answering an old timer question, and (2) you have to be one of the first
10 people to email me with the correct answer. i'll make the file
available through the weekend, but it will be taken down if the location
is published to this list. the file will be taken down for good sometime
on monday, regardless.
answer one of these two questions to prove that you're an old timer on the
list:
(1) who was the list administrator in 1992? or
(2) what was the email address of the list in 1992?
email the answer(s) back to me and be one of the first 10. my email is
below. i'll respond with the location of the download later today,
probably late afternoon.
if you want to give me the answers to these questions prior to 1992, i
guess i can accept those answers too since [i think] i know the answers,
but please include the 1992 answers since that's when i joined the list.
if you were actually on the list prior to 1992, you have my utmost
respect. if you weren't on the list back then, but can answer the
questions, that's fine too.
setlist as played from april 29, 2004 - merlefest 2004, wilkesboro, nc
1. fill it up again
2. something real
3. power of two

yeah, i got that meaning but if you take it literally it would mean "to
increase in size, strength or intensity." so, it is a bit confusing at
first.

well, the actual text reads: "wax bush: vote 2004." i know cause i am
wearing the shirt as i type this.
basically, the "wax bush" is a double entendre meaning to get rid of
something unwanted and it is a plug for folks to get out and vote in the
2004 elections to make this happen.

damn, there is a lot of bush-bashing on this list. so much, my boyfriend once
asked me if i was subscribing to some underground hate group. but anyway, is
there some deep pleasure out of making fun of this guy that i am missing out
on?
ok, ok, so i don't know &%$& about politics, but i do know a bit about common
sense. and i hate to break it to you, but making fun of someone, no matter
how funny the acronym on your t-shirt is, ain't gonna help your cause out at
all.
i donno, i guess i just see so much bashing on this list that it makes me
wonder what a lot of these people are fighting for. do you not like him because
he is different from you? because his views are different from yours? are you
then saying that someone should hate you if they don't agree with you as well?
sorry if i offended anyone, i just had to get that off my chest and on to my
keyboard.
take care,
ryan

being informed is a voter's responsibility. i'm an avid supporter to
get bush out of office. i feel strongly (for many many reasons) that
he should not be in office (should never have been in office.)
several studies have been done that show that had the younger
voters 4 years ago actually voted, there would not have been any
question about the outcome of the election. i personally know so
many younger adults (ages 22-25) who didn't vote in the last
election. weren't informed. now are wondering why things are the
way that they are. the younger voter (which is the demographic
that the democrats are focusing on in this election - ages 18-22)
are caught by the "in your face" advertising. they want loud and
almost offensive. and we will see if it will help get bush out of
office.
and, sad to say, it is just too easy to poke fun at bush. he's done
and said so much that just beg to be made into a politcal cartoon.
since you admit that you don't know jack about politics, i would
encourage you to do a bit of research. take one of those online
"political finder" tests that can give you a start as to whether you
may be conservative, liberal, middle of the road, libertarian, ultra-
whatever. then go to websites of the leaders of these groups and
see if you agree with what they say. and i also encourage you to
go to http://www.moveon.org and read what they have to say.
i think there is a lot of bashing on this list because many of us are
sick and tired of the way our nation is being run. some of us are
just plain p*ssed. to quote emily,
"they're sending soldiers to distant places. x's and o's on
someone's drawing board. like green and plastic but with human
faces and they want to tell you it's a merciful sword. but with all the
blood newly dried in the desert, can we not fertilize the land with
something else. there is no nation, by god exempted. lay down
your weapon and love your neighbor as yourself."
(knowing someone is going to let me know if i go any words wrong
since i did it from memory lol!)

nothing. unless you're uncomfortable with any or all of the following:
1) a stolen election
2) war profiteering
3) lies and misrepresentations
4) the orchestrated dismantling of the bill of rights
5) the questions left unanswered by the 9-11 commission
6) a regressive social agenda
7) dead and dismembered human beings, mostly women, children and the
infirm or elderly as a result of an illegal war entered into in spite of
the worldwide opposition
8) a foreign policy that endangers every american citizen through an
escalation of anti-american feelings throughout the world
9) american service personnel used as pawns in an international chess
game by 'chicken hawks' who themselves avoided service
10) the blurring of the line between church and state that was one of the
founding principles of this nation
11) the rape of the environment by special interests
12) the removal of the elected president of haiti
13) the removal of the elected president of venezuela
14) incompetence
15) deceit
etc, etc, etc...
peace,

interesting theory. well, that's not really the more common usage of
"wax", but even if it were, it would be something bush did, not something
we did to him. the moon is not waxed by anything; it waxes. so you'd need
a comma on the tee shirt: wax, bush. and then it could be read as a
suggestion that he has too much body hair, which is the least of my
problems with him.

oh come on i suppose we should all dot our i's
and cross our t's and start our sentences with
capital letters and punctuate them and write
in paragraphs like we were all taught in school
i actually took a look at that wax bush and honestly, adding a comma
would have done
nothing to help me understand what that
meant and i doubt it would have helped anyone
else.
