yes.  i agree.  :)  although i don't put them at #1 or #2 over or under ig, because i just can't compare them.  both are completely unbelievable artists and concerts for totally different reasons.

mary lou lord-baby blue-her latest cd and it rocks!
texas-careful what you wish for or greatest hits-great band!
garbage-beautiful-i'm hooked on "breaking up the girl"!
dave alvin-king of california-great songwriter/new cd out 6/15!
kathleen edwards-failer-also hooked on "...radio won't like"!

the setlist that barb posted is the setlist for the dvd (come on home is on there as well, by the way).

the direct tv included a few more songs.  i have the vhs at home and will need to watch it again to get the complete setlist, but i know that it includes all of the songs on the dvd plus tether, closer to fine, heartache for everyone, free in you...

michael!  wow!  congrats!  will i be seeing you at the bay area shows this summer?  :)  any other shows?

hey karen, et al.

i actually have the directv show on my tivo right now, i just don't have the
wherewithall to convert it to cd for the wedding.  the studio version is
less appealing because of the drums and such.

my wedding is the day after the greek show, so for the first time since
1994, i'll miss the girls as they make a stop in the bay area.  you guys
will have to sing ghost twice as loudly on my behalf.

michael.

i have two extra tickets for indigo girls at britt fest on 22 july.  they are general admission, but if you look at the seating map, the ga/lawn area is in front of the reserved section, hence closer to the stage.

britt fest is in jacksonville, oregon, about 30 miles north of the california border.  the show is on the 22nd of july -- emily's birthday!

i paid $28 per ticket including a small service fee.  please email me if you are interested in one or both of them.

thanks!

hello,

i know that this is not the place for this, but i just wanted to reach out to as many people as possible.  my partner, jodie, is in the hospital intensive care unit.  i took her to the emergency room early tuesday morning (2 a.m.) because she was having severe abdominal pain.  she said she thought she was dying.  she also said the pain was worse than when she was in labor with our son.  she was told that she had gall stones and would need to have her gall bladder removed.  the doctors also said that as a result, she has pancreatitis.  early this morning (around 1 a.m.) her heart was beating very, very fast and her blood pressure was very low.

she is in a lot of pain and is only being given a minimal amount of pain medication because if she gets too much medication, her body will not be able too fight this infection/inflammation itself.  she cannot have surgery to have her gall bladder removed until her pancreas is no longer inflamed and she is doing better.  she is very scared and not doing well.  please pray for jodie.  keep her in your thoughts.  if you would like to send anything or visit her she is at st. joseph's hospital (in baltimore, md) the intesive care unit is on the fourth floor and she is in room 7.  some good things she has going for her are that she is young (she just turned 29 in march) and she has never had a serious illness in the past.  i hope you are doing well.  thank you for your thoughts and prayers!

peace, melissa

howdy  ya'll,

i realize the people i'm sending this to are ecclectic and sometimes unrelated but i love all of you for some reason or another and really need your help.  this summer i intend to finally really enjoy myself and indulge in being an english major by reading as many good books as possible.  problem is, being an english major means i know all about five hundred year old tomes about pioty and the truth behind chaucer but have no idea what out there is good *now*.  i've just finished the da vinci code and couldn't put it down so i know there's good stuff out there right now.

so if anyone has any suggestions whatsoever, any good book you've read in the past five years, please send me even just the title and/or author's name!  you don't have to make small talk, don't have to explain why you liked it (though i'd appreciate it) just gimme a boost!  i trust your judgement because i have something in common with each of you and therefore you're all innately cool.

ok, that's my plea, thanks!  peace and love ya'll.

~jules

for what it's worth, i've had the same condition for about 3 years now.  in fact, i suffered through a pancreatitis flareup throughout the last ig concert i attended at suny buffalo 2 years ago.  i can certainly empathize with jodie's pain...

through a careful diet, i've been able to keep it in check, though i've had to give up a lot of things that i like, and all fast food.  i don't miss it...

my best wished to you and your partner.  i know it's tough to stand by helplessly while someone you love is in pain...

i'm totally in love with sherman alexie, although i've had time only to
read one of his books, "the lone ranger and tonto fistfight in heaven." it's
a collection of short stories, but they all kind of weave together and a lot
of the same characters weave in and out of the stories.
i'm also participating (although not as much as i'd like) with a poetry
discussion group on yahoo that sherman is running, and i really liked the
first book he chose, called "echolocations," by diane thiel.
i also have never been a huge sci-fi fan, but last summer, i read
"fahrenheit 451," and thought that was excellent!

hello everyone,

thank you to everyone who wrote to me with your kind words and prayers.  it is comforting to know that so many people care.  thank you for keeping jodie and our family in your thoughts and prayers.

during the day, yesterday, she was very anxious, tired, uncomfortable, and said she wanted to leave the hospital and go home.  i know she justs wants to be out of pain and out of distress and feel better.  however, i know that she also knows she needs to stay in the hospital to get the best care and feel better.  i just told her she knows she has to get surgery and she can't get that if she's not in the hospital.  i think she was feeling very frustrated and just sick of 'fighting' this, she just wants it to be over.  she is so not herself.  it's very difficult for her.  and, it's also difficult to see her in so much pain and distress and know that i can't really 'do' anything about it.  but, i mean, the best is being done for her.  i just wish, like her, it would go quicker.  especially for her.  i don't like her to have to suffer so much.

yesterday, at around 9 p.m. she told me she had no pain whatsoever.  that was wonderful to hear.  a close friend of ours has been spending a lot of time with jodie, as well as her parents.  our friend is also a nurse/midwife in the hospital and has been very helpful.  she knows all the right questions to ask and is great with jodie.  she pushed the nurses to have her pain medication increased.  jodie really likes the medication because it is the only way she can sleep.  however, she has gotten very little sleep these past three nights.  she was given a new bed that she loves.  she said, "this bed rocks."  it has an air mattress and is adjustable in several ways.

unfortunately, she is having other difficulties, however.  her blood vessels are "leaking," as i've been told, which means the fluid in her vessels is 'leaking' out and into other parts of her body, mostly her abdomen.  her abdomen is very distended and she says she feels very bloated.  also, her kidneys are not functioning properly.  she is being introvenously given about 500 ml of liquids an hour.  she is only outputting less than 200 ml of urine an hour, however.  that's because of her 'leaky' vessels, and the fluid just lurking around in her abdomen instead of being in her system and being turned into urine.

last night, at around 2 a.m. she was having a lot of difficulty breathing.  she was also becoming confused due to the low oxygenation level of her blood.  she has been put on a 'bypass' breathing machine.  she is not intubated.  but, she has a mask strapped to her face.  she is still breathing on her own, but the machine helps give her full strong breaths and keeps her blood better oxygenated.  the name of the machine is "bipap."  if her oxygen levels in her blood continue to decrease, she will have to be intubated.  hopefully, that won't happen.  she also is now facing developing ards, acute respiratory distress syndrome, which is very serious.  i'm not sure if she definitely 'has it' now or if she may get it.  i'm thinking it's the first.  according to one info source i checked, 40% of people with ards die.  i really don't like that statistic.  the nurse just kept saying she's young and she will get over this 'hump.'

ards, the low blood pressure, and the leaky blood vessels are all a part of pancreatitis.  not all people get everything, but these things can happen.  the nurse on duty last night also said that this is one of those things where things often get worse before they get better.  i hope she has been through the worse and the better is soon to come!!

and, for those of you who don't know jodie well, i just thought i'd give you some extra information about her.  she is a mother and teacher.  she is very smart, funny, and kind.  she grew up in church, taught sunday school, was a peer mentor in high school, taught history lessons to eighth graders in high school.  now she teaches 8th grade english and social studies.  her students absolutely love her.  she is so 'cool.'  she is a great teacher.  she is a great friend.  she is a great mother.  she is a great daughter.  and, she is a great partner.  thank you so much for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers!

peace, melissa

hi jules,

good luck with the summer reading. there's lots of great stuff out there. my
tastes lean toward fantasy and sci-fi, so that's what the majority of my
list is comprised of.

1) the sandman library by neil gaiman. this is the most revolutionary comic
book series there ever was. it tranmutates comics into literature. it is the
story of the incarnation of dream and other members of his family, and it is
the story of the effects that choice and change have on us all. it's ten
volumes. i'd suggest starting with volume 1: preludes and nocturnes, or
season of mists (which i think is volume 4), which is the story of dream's
descent into hell to right a wrong he committed against a former lover. i
really can't praise sandman highly enough. if i could only take one book
with me on a desert island, it would be the sandman library (ok, that's 10
books, but i'd make the case that it's all one story).

2) the sparrow by mary doria russell. the best sci-fi i have ever read. i
wept for almost the entirety of the last 30 pages. it's the story of the
first jesuit mission to another planet and how--despite the best
intentions--it goes horribly wrong. beautiful and chilling. read it before
the movie comes out in a year or so.

3) the grass dancer by susan power. the past and present weaves together in
a brilliant story of native american life. when i finished it the first
time, i just started reading it again. it was that good.

4) a game of thrones by george r. r. martin. first part in an ongoing series
about a kingdom sort of like medieval england that is tearing itself apart
with internal politics while winter is approaching. in this fanstasy world,
winter can last for years. very well-written. each chapter is from the point
of view of a different character.

5) the poisonwood bible by barbara kingsolver. any of her books is great,
but i think this is her best. tells the story of a family headed by an
authoritarian preacher that goes on a mission to africa and how that effects
their lives. it's really amazing.

ok. hope that helps and no one else was bored.

cheers,
tom

hey gang - i'm supposed to play at an upcoming

for dixie chicks songs, but i'm not that familiar
with them - can somebody tell me what the big
radio hits are, so i can download a few?  i am
looking for upbeat and something that doesn't
have lyrics that would be inappropriate for a
corporate crowd.... i think goodbye earl is out
for instance, which is a shame, because that's
the only one i really know....  anyhow, it has to
be a 'radio' song that people would know too.

reply to me, not the whole list - thanks!!!

hey everyone,

well after four days of seriously fighting this, jodie finally seems to be showing some improvement.  i spoke with the doctor monitoring her last night and she said lots of things are looking better.  her white blood cell count has come down, which means her body isn't fighting as hard against the infection, so it must be getting better.  also her heart rate has decreased from the 140's and 150's to the 120's and 130's.  today i saw the machine say 113 for a brief moment.  it was the lowest i've seen her heartrate since she's been in the hospital.  her heart has been beating so fast because her body is working so hard to survive and fight against this.  it has to work so hard because her body is so sick.  but, since her heart rate is slowing and getting closer to normal, it shows that her body isn't having to work so hard against this.  another sign that she is improving.  her urine output is now "good" according to her doctor.  before they kept saying it was poor.  they have
also decreased the amount of liquids they are giving her.  before they were giving her about 500 ml an hour, now it's only 70 ml an hour.  these are all good things. :)  also, her enzyme levels from her pancreas are much better.  they are no longer completely out of wack.  they, too, are looking good and closer to the normal range.

finally, her breathing is better.  she is still on an oxygen mask.  first she had a full face mask, then after about 12 hours they switched her to just a nose mask.  then yesterday (about 24 more hours later) they switched her back to a full face mask, that covers her nose and mouth.  finally, her blood gas levels, the amount of oxygen (and not carbon dioxide) are increasing.  the doctor said that since she is being given so much medicine (pain relievers, sedatives, and other stuff) it is hard for her to take full, deep, effective breaths on her own.  without the mask, her breathing is very poor.  but, with the mask, her breathing is finally more effective.  i was very happy to hear that so much has improved.  finally!  the days and days of worsening and thing after thing being added to the list of parts of her that are not working properly was getting really scary.  and just watching them stay the same and not improving for 24, 48, 72 hours was getting hard to bear.  it's al
l just a wait and see kind of thing.  they are doing all they can for her and giving her everything she needs to improve and get through this.  the last and most important part is for her body to heal itself.  so, it looks like her pancreas is on its way, as well as her kidneys.  hopefully, with the pancreatitis getting better, her distressed breathing (which got that way as a result of the pancreatitis) will continue to improve, too.  i'm hoping to get more good news today when i talk to the doctor again.  or at least no news that anything has gotten worse.

well, thank you to everyone who has emailed me.  thank you to everyone who is out there praying and keeping us in mind.  jodie's parents returned home (an hour and a half away) on friday and have eli with him.  they'll bring him back on sunday.  i hope things continue to move in the right direction.  thank you, again.

peace, melissa

happy sunday everyone!

i've been on a non-fiction reading spree lately.  here's my list:

"the day the world came to town:  9/11 in gander, newfoundland"   by jim
defede
now, i have stayed away from books about september 11th because for me
it was hard enough to live through once, without having to read about it
again, but this book caught my eye in b&n.  we'd just returned from a short
trip to nova scotia and were so taken by the kindness and generosity of the
people that we met there.  i wanted to see how this little town handled
receiving over 6000 people on the planes on that day.  what an amazing read
this book is!  again the people of eastern canada blew me away with their
kindness to strangers.  it's a heartwarming book that reaffirms that there
are good people out there especially when something devastating has
happened.

"return of the osprey:  a season of flight & wonder" by david gessner
this book was a gift from my mom, which makes it required reading for
me.  i've ended up reading a couple of times now...david gessner is a writer
who lives on cape cod (my original home).  when i was growing up we never
saw osprey.  after reading this book i understood why.  there were very few,
if any, on the cape at that time.  they had almost been wiped out as a
result of ddt.  this book is like a journal kept by mr. gessner over the
course of a year watching 4 osprey nests and the activities therein.  it's a
great glimpse into the lives of the osprey, but also wildlife on the cape
(yes there is still some...lots of coyotes, and last week i followed a fox
down the street, deer, tourists, yadda, yadda, yadda...)

"the essential 55:  an award-winning educator's rules for discovering the
successful student in every child"  by ron clark
a book that all teachers and anyone who works with children wishes that
every parent or anyone who has responsibility for raising children would
read.  i don't necessarily agree with all of his 55 "rules" but, having
teenagers myself, and having worked in the schools, there are some great
ideas here on common sense behavior and common courtesy.

and for my fiction suggestion...the clan of the cave bear series by jean
auel.

peace & happy reading!

i haven't been listening to ig as much lately as i've got a new music
obsession, but it's time to brush up on ig as they're coming to town next
week!!!!!i'm sure after seeing amy again the girls will be in my car cd
player daily again.

the cash brothers -  tops my daily category. i can't get enough of their
harmonies and blending of voices.  the more i listen the better i like them.
yum!  the lyrics are pretty good too.  lisalisaa, if you like wilco and
steve earle you'll probably like these guys.  they're along the same type of
music

skydiggers - peter cash's (of the cash brothers) old band.  great canehdian
folk rock ( i guess that might be their "label", also alt country? maybe)

jay farrar - amazon.com said that if i like the cash brothers i'd like jay
farrar, so i bought "sebastopol" to see if they were right.  they were.

michael franti - i just love michael franti  his live shows are amazing.
the love and energy is almost touchable at his shows.  anyone else feel
that?  his music is amazing.  his energy is amazing. his poetry is amazing.
i just love michael franti!

robert mirabal - traditional native flute player, native rock & roller.
"alternative" and "music from the painted caves" are great cd's

tragically hip - my favorite song by the hip is "new orleans is sinking".
it's got a great guitar hook to it.

sleepy labeef - rockabilly at its best.  this is a big man with a huge deep
voice and a great guitar (and he drives a big ole white caddie) "don't mess
with my toot-toot!

lordes perez - when i'm in the mood for sultry

los lonely boys - just love these guys..."vamonos!"

so, i don't know if anyone else saw this, but i just flipped on the tv to the today show and they were in the middle of some segment in which jann wenner was talking about the progression of rock and roll--i didn't get anymore about the context.  they showed clips from all of the top rock stars of all time--hendrix, the doors, beatles, janis etc. etc. etc.  they were scrolling through the decades and moved onto michael jackson, madonna and then lilith fair in which they mentioned no names but showed ig playing closer to fine with lots of other women on the stage with them.  then they rolled on into the 90's and 2000's with grunge artists and so on.  i have to say i was pleased but a bit surprised that ig and closer to fine defined the progress of "feminist" icons progressing from madonna's arrival on the scene to the huge success of lilith fair.  i know, and you all know, that ig deserves to be recognized among the greats, but to see them smack dab in the middle of this long
list of greats still took me by surprise...i don't know why....
anyhow, here's hoping some of you saw it too.  lee

hey everyone,

thank you for continuing to keep jodie and her family in your thoughts and prayers.  she still is in the icu and will probably be for a while yet.  right now, i'm not exactly sure of the latest findings with jodie.  she just went in for her third ct scan when i left to pick up eli from daycare.  they are checking to see if she has any bleeding in her abdomen.  they also want to see what her organs look like.

she is not in so much pain anymore, thank goodness.  yesterday was her most alert and oriented yet.  she was making little jokes, saying funny things.  she was complaining a little and being a little 'bossy' about this or that.  i can't even remember the specifics, but i just remember thinking, if she's able to be funny and complain, then she must be feeling better.  she was taken off of the bipap breathing machine which was helping to fully inflate her lungs when she breathed in.  it wasn't breathing for her, but made her breathing easier.  she hates the machine, though.  so, we're both glad when she's not on it.  she has gone back on it at night, though.  when she's sleeping it's harder for her to continue to take deep, even breaths.

yesterday morning they started giving her lasix, which is a drug to help her pee out the excess fluids in her body.  over the three or four days they were giving her liquids, they gave her a total of 10 liters!  the doctor said that since she can tolerate having liquid taken out of her system that's definitely better than needing extra fluids.  she continues to have good urine output.  she still has a lot of anxiety about things.  she was nervous going in to her ct scan.  i realize most people would.  but, jodie is the kind of person who freaks out about nothing and overreacts about the littlest thing.  so, for her, these things are even worse than most people would think.  and she says that laying flat is painful for her, so she also doesn't like the scan because of that.
they have been giving her haldol for her anxiety, so i'm glad they're aware and doing something to help her.  her nurse was also talking with her today about not being scared.  she said it was okay to be afraid, but there wasn't anything that jodie could do about getting the ct scan.  it will still happen, so she just needs to get through it.  the fact that she's had it before makes me think it would be no problem for her.  but, maybe for her she just thinks about how much she didn't like the last two.

jodie's dad found out that gall stones run on his side of the family.  my mother told me that her mother also had them and said they were worse than childbirth.  my grandmother had 9 kids, too!  well, i have been sleeping at home again.  i've been getting a lot of sleep.  it's hard to be at the hospital all the time.  i'm keeping eli with me now, too.  he was really starting to miss his mommies.  he's sick of jodie being in the hospital.  he knows she's really sick, but he just wants it to be over already.  his mommies are right there with him.

keep praying for jodie and let's hope she is through the worst.  thank you for your kindness and caring.

peace, melissa

biblical views on homosexuality and how they
can be applied today?

i just get so tired of closed-minded people quoting scripture or just
plain saying,"it's in
the bible...homosexuality is wrong." i'm floored
by that....try to say anything to those people
and they give ya (what i call) the broken record approach to
homosexuality.

i'd like something to stand on so i can hold my own.

thanks all!

you are creative... those people were tenacious last year!  one guy told me
i could bring an empty water bottle in if i drank it all or dumped it.  so,
i emptied my brand new bottle of poland springs onto the ground.  when i got
to the next guy at the gate, presumably the manager, he wouldn't let me
bring it in empty!  he was a real jerk about it too.  i can't even tell you
how outrageous the concession prices were on top of it ... there ought to be
a law!

good luck!
