the harvard chaplain, the rev. peter gomes, has written a couple of
books. i think he is openly gay.
also, there is a book by an episcopal bishop, j. neil alexander,
called "this far by grace," in which he describes his journey toward understanding
and supporting gay people.
then, there is "stranger at the gate" by mel white, who is part of the
metropolitan community church. he used to ghost-write for jerry falwell.
and barry stopfel, the openly gay
former-episcopal-priest-now-unitarian-universalist-minister, who wrote a book about his situation that i think is
called "courage to love."
hope they are a good start. i know there are no women here. i don't
know any books by women. anyone else?

john boswell's _christianity, tolerance, and homosexuality_ is a great
start, especially the appendices about translation and context. peter gomes
_the good book_ has a brief, readable summary, but boswell's the mother lode.
however.....
whenever i get the scripture argument, i try to point out that it's
irrelevant in discussing _civil_ marriage. as far as i'm concerned,
churches are free to discriminate -- it's none of my business how they live
out their faith. if a church doesn't want to marry gay couples or recognize
their marriages, or even have gay members, then so be it.
however, they are _not_ free to legislate their religious beliefs. there
needs to be a "compelling state interest" -- and that doesn't include
theology -- to deny an individual or group a "fundamental right" such as
marriage (loving v virginia, 1967).
marriage does not require a religious endorsement -- many people are
married by a justice of the peace (my parents' 50 year marriage began that
way). besides, some faiths _do_ accept same-sex marriage, so the idea that
"religious people" are opposed is, well, simply untrue.
to allow those opposed to homosexuality to continue to frame it as a
religious argument plays into their hands. instead, it must be reframed as
a civil rights issue, which, given the united states' legal system, is
where it belongs.

here are the points i always make when this discussion arises:
-- even atheists are allowed to marry.
-- when a marriage is dissolved, it happens in a courthouse, not god's
house.

<<are you open-minded to the possibility that it is in the bible?>>
yes. it is in the bible that's why i'm floored. i also believe that
often what is in the bible is open for interpretation, like i'm sure
jesus really wants us to cut off our right hand if we sin with it....
do they listen to that? no.....because to someone who interprets the
bible as the literal word of god, that's the absolute
word there is no room for discerning an author's opinion from
the eternal it is all same thing ....god's word.
i tell those people that there is another way to look at the bible....as
a catholic i believe the bible is not the literal word, it is the
inspired word of god. and that that philiosophy allows room for
opinions. whether those opinions are god's and how one should follow
them is open for interpretation and analysis. it isn't all black and
white.

and, i went to support the rainbow sash movement glbt community at the
cathedral when one of the so-called ushers of the eucharist called me a
"traitor to catholicism." and called me "judas iscariot." then they told
me,"you can't be a catholic and support gay rights!" to that i shot
back,"just watch me."
i guess i can expect that if i'm going to publicly support the glbt
community.....i've heard
many other absurd ideas like "it's popular
to be gay," i tell them "well i don't know it seems to me the fact that
people with that view are in the majority right now says
it's not popular."
oh well, i'm done.

ok, i could write a really long post about this (i'm in graduate school for
religion, and even though biblical studies isn't my field, i do a lot of
coursework there) but i will keep this short.
neil is definitely not a homophobe - i think he's just pointing to the fact that
saying the bible is inspired by god is no more or less an inrepretive act than
claiming it to be the literal word of god. and there are all sorts of reasons
internal to the text why somebody who is already so inclined might find good
grounding for reading it literally.
also, for what it's worth, i don't think anbody claims divine authorship for the
new testament, just divine inspiration (although it's true there's not a lot of
room left for human error) - it's only the hebrew bible that is sometimes
regarded as the literal word of god, having been handed down to moses on sinai.
it's probably also worth remembering that there are plenty of people with
sufficient historical-critical faculties to grasp the fact that the text we have
was not penned by god who nonetheless believe that homosecuality is wrong. i
certainly don't agree with them, but let's not jump to assuming they're all
idiots. (nobody has voiced that kind of sentiment in this discussion, but i know
it often lies behind these conversations.)
anyhow, remember when amy called herself a "pagan for jesus"? i know that was in
an interview somewhere, but i forget when. i wonder if that was before or after
plaing the man himself in jcs....

>>breathe - relax - barb - neily isnt a homophobe - probably just trying =

they were serious questions. if you want a book (or link) telling you =
that
homosexuality is ok then i'll point you in one direction. if you want a =
book
(or link) giving the homosexuality is evil talk you'll be heading =
elsewhere.
if you want a balance, then i'll point you somewhere else.
mostly i find that people want to the bible to confirm what they already
belive. (an interesting exercise in that regard: ask those who are
anti-homosexuality whether they are also anti-'divorce and remarriage'. =
the
bible is much clearer (imho) in condemning the latter, but most people =
don't
have a problem with it).
although my second point was really that 'closed-minded' is not much of =
an
insult if the one using it is 'closed-minded' themselves. i'm glad that
wasn't the case. obviously if one is open minded to the fact that the =
bible
might really be anti-gay (or anti-women, or whatever) then one really =
has a
lot to lose, which is a position i have great respect for.
oh and thanks for mandy and mike for saying i'm not a homophobe, but =
either
nobody said i was or i didn't get that email yet (i'm looking forward to

if you like non-fiction, i highly recommend "step across this line -
collected non-fiction 1992-2002" by salman rushdie. i'm 3/4 through
reading it right now. the book is a collection of speeches , magazine
articles, essays, and journal entries. it covers everything from essays
on being onstage with u2, being screamed at by a drunk van morrison, to
in depth examination of the iranian fatwa, islamic fundamentalism,
freedom of speech, and secular v religious looks at personal
freedom/responsibility.
all with a wonderful self depreciating sense of humor.
i found this book on half.com which i highly recommend for book buying.
you won't find recent releases on half.com, bur for books a year or 2

also, do you think they will do a 'rarities' tour to support the album? that

barb,
others have given you some good suggestions. bishop spong and the mcc
church are good resources for a christian perspective about homosexuality, the
bible and the christian religion. educating oneself is never a bad thing.
one of the problems that i have found is that those that choose to use the bible as
their defense will never be swayed from their current interpretation even if you can
prove it using the bible. i used to talk myself blue in the face trying to point out a
different pov about scripture or putting scripture into context. for instance there is
a story in the bible about g-d turning his back on someone who "spilled his seed on
her belly" and that is used as an argument that masturbation is an abomination to
g-d. however, in the context of the story, g-d's law said that if a man did not father
a son before he died it was the responsibility of his brother to father that son for him.
well, this dude didn't want that because then his brother's child fathered by him
would have higher standing than his sons, so he didn't fall through with his
obligation. it was the disobedience that g-d was ticked off about, not the act of
masturbation. but don't try to convince anyone who already has their minds made
up otherwise!
i was once sent a long list of bible scriptures that were relevant to homosexuality. i
could argue down every one of them. it wouldn't do me any good because those
that understand would agree and those that don't, won't. so after years of hearing
people tell me how vile homosexuality is and how damned i am (despite the fact
that i don't believe in their g-d anyway) i found that i just would respond, "i believe
differently and i don't believe that our getting into an argument over splitting
scripture is going to resolve anything for either of us. we must either agree to
disagree andremain friends or we mustpart ways. i'm willing to talk to you about
this in a civil way, but refuse to engage in a heated debate where neither of us is
goingto change our minds." i havea good friend who is muslem and we agree to
just not discuss my sexuality nor homosexuality in general. (although he does like
my take on "civil unions for all.")

i'm also hoping for winthrop. i would also like to
see lifeblood, squeaky fromme, and chiapas bound. i
would expect mona lisas since i read they've been
playing that lately at shows. i could die happy if
they released a better recording of the rocked out
version of power of two (from the suffragettes tour)
than the boot i have.

possibly "mona lisas and mad hatters," since they've kind of reincarnated it.

hey y'all,
i have been trying, for weeks, to get a ticket or two to the indigo girls concert at the meijer gardens in grand rapids. the show is sold out. i was out of town when they went on sale, and they sold out quickly (which is great, considering the quirkiness of west michigan).
i'm hoping that they may release a few more seats next week, but you never know. does anyone have any advice or can anyone point me in the right direction to score tickets? i know, i'm fortunate, i've seen the girls many times, mostly out of michigan, but i'd really like to see them here at the home base, which is something that doesn't happen that often. because i love them so much!
thanks for indulging me, and if you have a ticket or two that you can't use for this concert, or if you know of some way that i could score a ticket, please e-mail me off-list.
thanks again, folks.

subject: the bible and being gay (tnigc)
in light of the recent topics of conversation, i would like to share an email, that someone sent to me regarding the subject at hand, some very interesting points and questions are raised. and just as someone who was raised catholic, i believe in god, and i don't give a rat's ass what the bible says, it is a man made piece of fiction, but i do enjoy the hypocrisy of the the "quoters".
while i was in atlanta, i picked up the book "what the bible really says about homosexuality" and if you care, then it is an interesting read ( it anyway), but remember homophobic people love to pull the "god says it's wrong" they feel it is their trump card. i have two things to say about that 1.) god never said it to me ( although i do not have a direct line to him, unlike some people ie: gw bush) and 2.) what are the guidelines most catholics live by, there condensed set of rules? is it perhaps the 10 commandments? well, if this is such an issue of importance to the church, and is so strongly stated in the bible, why didn't it make their "top 10 list"? makes one wonder, eh?.....
janet
on her radio show recently, dr laura schlesinger said that homosexuality is an abomination according to leviticus 18:22,and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. the following response is an open letter to dr. laura, penned by a us resident, which was posted on the internet. it's funny, as well as informative:
dear dr. laura:
thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding god's law. i have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as i can. when someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, i simply remind him or her that leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. ... end of debate. i do need some advice from you; however, regarding some other elements of god's law and how to follow them 1. when i burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, i know it creates a pleasing odor for the lord - lev.1: 9. the problem is my neighbors. they claim the odor is not pleasing to them. should i smite them? 2. i would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in exodus; 21:7. in this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? 3. i know that i am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - lev.15: 19-24. the problem is how do i tell? i have tried asking, but m
ost women take offense. 4. lev. 25:44 states that i may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. a friend of mine claims that this applies to mexicans, but not canadians. can you clarify? why can't i own canadians? 5. i have a neighbor who insists on working on the sabbath. exodus 35:2. the passage clearly states he should be put to death. am i morally obligated to kill him myself? 6. a friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. i don't agree. can you settle this? are there 'degrees' of abomination? 7. lev. 21:20 states that i may not approach the altar of god if i have a defect in my sight. i have to admit that i wear reading glasses. does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here? 8. most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbid
den by lev.19: 27. how should they die? 9. i know from lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may i still play football if i wear gloves? 10. my uncle has a farm. he violates lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). he also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - lev.24: 10-16. couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (lev. 20:14) i know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so i am confident you can help. thank you again for reminding us that god's word is eternal and unchanging.

hey everyone,
so i've been psyching myself for the nj ig next week by looking at old set
lists (and i'm very fortunate that i'll be able to attend this show, seeing
how i was in a serious car accident memorial day weekend. i'm mostly fine
now; the fractures are healing very well). i noticed that lifeblood doesn't
have galileo on the set list for this show. is it possible that they didn't
play it? i've never heard of an ig show without it since the release of rop.
could someone who was at the show verifiy whether or not galileo was played?
thanks and be well.

hi folks -
checking out www.bostonpride.org and their calendar says they are going
to be announcing a "special national headliner"
so as in 97, 98, 2000, and 2002, is this the ig and will they actually
perform this time?????
curious - it is about time they play a boston pride considering how many
prides they've been here for...

leviticus also says this about eating shrimp and pork. (dr. laura may not do either, as
she's converted to orthodox judaism.)
one of the most amusing actions back in 1992 when the anti-gay proposition 9 was on the
ballot was a bunch of people who got another proposition based on leviticus on the same
ballot. it would have prohibited the government from encouraging eating shrimp, shaving
beards, etc.

hey,
thanks to those that responded. it appears that they did play galileo at
this show. i figured as much, since it would've been super-weird for them
not to play it.
have fun at your shows everyone. send us reviews and set lists, please!
cheers,

is anyone going to pride that can tape? my friend kristi martel is performing
first at 12:10 (she was originally scheduled as second, but she is supposed
to be playing first now...) i'd love to get a copy of her set if anyone is
going and taping....
also, i've been trying to help promote kristi, so if anyone would like a free
cd sampler of her, please e-mail me off list with your address :)

we get conan via the st. louis market, and they did
the same thing, coming back from a commercial break
after their song and they were both seated with conan,
but he only had time to say goodnight. did anyone in a
different market get to see him chat with amy and
emily? yesterday was my birthday, so getting to see ig
perform was the perfect way to end my day, especially
since i don't think i'll be making any of the tour
dates posted so far. they both looked radiant and
sounded amazing. i loved emily's shirt ... fabulous! i
could only see the lettering at the top that said bush
and then the scream art ... i'm not sure if it said
anything at the bottom, but i don't think it was the
same as the wax bush shirt i've heard mentioned. i
think i like the scream one better : )
have a great weekend, everybody!

he generally doesnt talk to musical guests....
but what i want to know is:
since the world does revolve around me, and i was in nyc a week ago, how
come no one told amy and emily to adjust their schedules - i mean - i would
have endured a conan taping and i was a couple blocks from mtv, and if i
dress right, i could have sorta been their demographic...
i mean - the weekend new england run is great, but they could have
scheduled a house concert in lewiston, or auburn, or both actually, since
it's so costly to tour and they probably are not touring with the biodeisel
buses neil young is and maine is vacationland and everything....
ok, i'm being silly...
hoping for a great show tonight - (anyone else going - look for the geek in

my waxbush shirt came in the mail last week. it is pretty cool, but they do run small. the large is actually like a small medium (at least in the men's sizes). anyway, i love my shirt and wear it proudly!!

it was pretty chilly sitting in that audience last night. there were a surprisingly large number of empty seats. i checked ticketmaster to see what the seat availability was quite frequently up until yesterday and usually what came up was the back of the venue. once in a while a closer row would come up, but i wanted to know if a dynamite seat would be offered at the last minute.
my seats were on amy's side, 8 rows back. since it was just the two of them last night,(no band), they whipped through their set, changing guitars at a fast speed, and i'm not sure how many songs they played, but they were mostly short ones-no extended chickenman, or anything like that. here's what i remember:
they opened with:
fill it up again
perfect world
then, not in order:
all that we let in
get out the map
land of canaan
least complicated
wood song
go
let it be me
free in you
collecting you
shame on you
become you
(notice a trend here?)
closer to fine
dairy queen
johnny rottentail
heartache for everyone
ghost
power of two
scooter boys
galileo
the only songs amy got intense with were go and johnny rottentail.
amy wore her shiny red shirt (with black sunburst design from conan)and emily wore a dark lavender shirt, also shiny. amy looked delighted during the whole show, like she was loving seeing the joy on everyone's faces while they sang and danced, especially to the new songs. it just seemed that she couldn't not smile. emily looked as lovely as always, maybe more so.
i've seen cordero before and i guess they are just not for me. not only were most of the songs in another language but the beat was pretty repetetive and the lead singer needed to get into it more for me to be there with her.
that's it for me...looking forward to hyannis tonite!

i also bought me and kristin wax bush shirts, they are awesome, the funny looks you get are great. they are as i like to call them "motorcycle shirts" people look at women on bikes a lot, but you have on a funky t shirt then they really stare. i also bought one that says "vote you fuckers" which i think is pretty funny, but sometimes in new hampshire people don't like insinuation that you are not voting for gw, i hope they get used to the idea!

last night was duo - confirmed rumor is that band starts on tour in
portland, or wednesday...
and last night was unreal - one of their better nights - all i gotta say is
ghost in the encore and all that we let in live...
more review soon - i did lose my tape recorder but got a almost complete
recording - and i do know it was indeed completely taped!

supposidly the rest of the east coast tour (meadowbrook to atlanta) is band.
and supposidly the whole west coast tour (july, new mexico to colorado) is
without band.
i am hearing that from more than one source. but it is kind of fun to go and
be surprised, don't ya think?

the show last started a little early. cordero began their set around 7:45pm. they seemed a little more relaxed than in boston. amy and emily joined them in a song. (in boston, it was just amy who sang with them.)
the round stage in hyannis didn't make a full circle last night: it almost did, but instead of continuing in the same direction, at some point it reversed direction so some people got more of a face-to-face concert than others. there werre some technical/sound problems, too. while sulli and others dealt with that, amy and emily opened the floor to questions. one was a request for love will come to you which they later honored. they chatted a lot more here than in boston...they kind of had to while they waited. anyone else remember some of the conversation? i remember someone asked if they'd run for president and emily asked if we thought they were electable.
amy had on a red jacket with a map of the phillipines on the back, t-shirt under that. emily wore an opened button down shirt w/ a t-shirt underneath (#85).
i know i'm leaving quite a few songs out, but this is what i remember of the set list:
they opened with yield
they closed with american tune:)
the rest is not in order
dairy queen-gotta do it when there's an actual one down the street from the venue!
perfect world
all that we let in
fill it up again
watershed
chickenman/bitterroot-w/a great guitar solo from emily
thin line
love will come to you
power of two
closer to fine
shame on you
reunion (thank you!)
heartache for everyone
go
leaving you (by emily-is that the title?)
galileo
come on home (i think they did this one)
emily actually signed a few autographs as she walked off stage-i haven't seen them do that before.
anyone see them after the show?
looking forward to northampton. i hope that someone who is going to nh today will post a review.

i also bought one that says "vote you fuckers" which i think is pretty funny,
that is funny! even made me laugh. well, ig will be here in baltimore in just a few days. looks like jodie will still be in the hospital. so, we probably won't be going to the show. i'll ask her today if she wants me to sell the tickets or have me and our son go. it's up to her what i'll do. i'll let you know what she says. if she wants me to get rid of the tix, y'all be the first to know and have a crack at them. they're row gg i think. not that great, but ya get what ya can...

hey everyone,
well, the latest news on jodie is that she's probably going to be in the icu/hospital for a good while longer. the recovery time varies a lot from person to person, anywhere from 2 weeks to 8 weeks. the doctor i spoke with yesterday said she has a pretty 'bad' case of pancreatitis. and i know that no matter what jodie gets, it always takes her very long to get better. she'll keep a regular cold for a month(!), whereas i get over it in a day or two. jodie told me that they told her she'll be in the icu for four weeks (i think that's in addition to the 2 weeks she's already been there) and then the regular hospital for another 2 to 3 weeks! so much for teachers getting the summer off. when she finally gets out of the hospital, it'll be back to school for her. yay! :|
the 'weekend' doctor also told me that they are not even thinking of taking her gall bladder out anymore! news to me and jodie. you think they'd share this kind of info with a patient and/or their family! i asked the doctor if they knew if she still had any other gall stones. he said he didn't know. alrighty, that sounds brilliant! hmm, this could just happen to her again, yeah, let's keep the gall bladder in. what's the point?! so she can nearly die and be in the hospital for another 2 months!?!? i just don't understand something, clearly.
sorry to seem upset. but, it's hard to deal with all this. first of all, yesterday was the first time i have talked to a doctor in like 4 days. i get to the hospital and will stay for anywhere from 2 hours to 6 hours, or whatever, and when i ask to speak with a doctor, it's like asking to have a private meeting with god. "oh sure, let me page them for you." then 20 minutes later the nurse will ask me, "what, the doctor didn't speak with you, yet?" or "well, the doctor never called back, so i guess they're busy." what, like this patient isn't important enough to be bothered about. agh! it's so frustrating. so, rather than wait and wait and wait and still not see a doctor, i just give up and go home. and jodie's parents are calling me non-stop wanting an 'update,' which i don't have. so, i have to deal with that, too. "sorry, i haven't called, i have nothing to say." or, i can just call and breathe on the phone, what's the point?!
well, again, i'm sorry to seem so upset, it's just frustrating that this is dragging on and on and i feel like i have no idea what's going on. not to mention the fact that i need to get a 'doctor's note' for my work saying why i haven't been there for two weeks. like i want to go back. we have school for another two weeks. yay.
okay, well, today i am hoping to get to talk to the regular doctor who's monitorin her and the surgeon who is in charge of everything concerning jodie... so, hopefully i'll get some decent info and not feel left out in the dark. not to mention that jodie 'feels' fine now, she just hasn't eaten or drank anything in two weeks, except for intravenously, and she's bored out of her mind! she asked me to get her a gameboy advance and some games. i, of course, obliged. she says she doesn't sleep very much because she can't sleep on her back. she normally sleeps on her stomach. at least when she was pregnant she could sleep on her side. but, it's too difficult for her to breathe when she's on her side. she is still getting oxygen through a mask 24/7, i.e. even at night. i don't think they've been putting the bipap on her at night. i'll ask her to make sure. she has had a fever on and off for the past several days. they don't know what's causing it. they took a bunch samp
les (blood, urine, stool, etc.) but nothing grew in the cultures. they think it might be her central iv line that's infected. they are going to try to give her a new one today. they tried to yesterday, but they couldn't get a vein in the opposite side of her neck, from where it is now.
the other two big things besides the fever are to get her eating and drinking normally again and to get her out of bed, sitting up in a chair, and walking around. she definitely seemed stronger yesterday. she was sitting up with ease, and not severely straining just to move around. her surgeon is the one deciding when she will eat again. they said that her pancreatic enzymes (lipase and amylase) are back to normal and her potassium and sodium are back to normal also. thank goodness. hopefully, when they do start feeding her normal food her pancreas will start to work as it's supposed to, meaning that it's healthy and 'better' and that she's okay. obviously, she can't go home until she can eat normally. fun.
okay, well sorry for the ranting. thanks for reading and keeping jodie in your thoughts and prayers. i wish we wouldn't have to miss yet another concert this saturday (indigo girls at merriweather), but it's looking like what's going to happen. oh, well. so is life.
peace, melissa
