yeah, the rainbow family has long banned alcohol from entering the
actual gatherings for just this reason. (although they do have
"a-camp", usually set up away from the main group near the parking)
amusing considering all the other substances readily available at such
things.
also, at the eurocup matches in portugal, they've banned alcohol from
the matches, but have decided to allow marajuana. interestingly
enough, there's been no typical hooliganism this year. imagine!

she didn't say she wanted to invade her space and kill all those around
her as collateral damage. no mention of tanks and long range bombers
from the upper balcony. just a nice pop in the head. if bush just
gave saddam a little right hook think of how different things would be.
a little punch for such an obnoxious comment is well deserved. sure
diplomacy and talking has it's place (like prior to sending 150,000
troops somewhere). just not here :). it's a no brainer.

hello everyone,
here is the set list from the show in columbia, md
from sat. june 19:
tether
fill it up again
yield
power of 2
ozilline (booming bass line)
least complicated
heartache for everyone
come on home
closer to fine
tangled up in blue (they said they just re-learned
this one the other day)
dairy queen
rise up
moment of forgiveness
all that we let in
scooter boys (someone requested this and they did it
acoustic because "the band didn't know it yet")
trouble
land of canaan (emily smoking on the solo as usual)
get out the map
go
-----encore
perfect world
galileo
as someone mentioned earlier they were rushed at the
end and you could hear amy say she "forgot about the
curfew" or something like that, so we missed american
tune. :( it seemed like it took excruciatingly long
for the crew to set the stage after the opening band,
and that was the difference.
american tune is one song i'm dying to hear live.
that and finlandia, love will come to you, and reunion
(acoustic of course). :)
i had a 3rd row seat behind the pit on the amy side,
and it was great. lots of crowd singing, amy smiled a
lot. at one point i noticed a moth flying around and
thought "you know, it's a good thing the cicadas have
died down or it could have been a real mess".
apparently they were "really bad" in columbia. i work
there, saw a few, and i live 25 miles to the east and
hadn't seen a single one by my house, but at least
there were none at the show.
hope to catch them again this summer! have a good
week everyone,
sue

hmm, makes sense. i've seen many a time where a couple normal, average guys, that otherwise are wonderful people, act like complete idiots and fight for seemingly no reason at all when alcohol has been involved. but have you ever noticed how rare it is for two guys smoking mj get in a fight like that? makes you wonder why one is legal and the other isn't...makes me think of hkf!

mandy,
one of my favorite performers is former blaster dave alvin. as much i as i love his music, i can't stand seeing him perform in any venue with a fully stocked bar.
i can't stand it because like you said, people around me act like "f---ing animals". his music is pretty much based on being able to hear the lyrics, so i do not understand why you would want to put yourself in a state where you can't hear the music you paid for in the first place. makes no sense to me.
my two cents...

apologies if this has been said before here, but it bears repeating...deb:
two buddhist monks were walking along one day when they came to a
stream, and a young woman was there, trying to get across. the older monk picked
her up and carried her across.
the two monks then resumed their journey, but the younger monk was
silent, stewing inside that the older monk had violated their principles by
having physical contact with a woman.
finally, at dusk, they made camp for the night, and the older monk
turned and asked: "why have you been quiet for so long?"
the younger monk replied angrily: "you violated our principles by
having physical contact with that woman!"
the older monk responded: "are you still carrying her around? i set
her down hours ago."

although the venue, meijer gardens, is absolutely beautiful, we really couldn't experience the warmth of a lovely summer's evening because it was, literally, a drench fest. and it was chilly. it pretty much poured all evening, and when emily came on stage, she said, kind of in a "yipes" way, "you're a hardy group! we've been watching everyone arrive from our dry bus."
patty and i arrived right when the gates opened, and i was pleasantly surprised to see that there were so many people there so early, in spite of the weather. i was thinking, "you go, grand rapids...i'm so proud of you for toughing it out!" it was exciting. you never know what you're going to get here...this town is so conservative, although there were plenty of fans en force. anyway, we arrived, roman candle was setting up (they're very good...bass was a little loud, though), and we ended up standing about ten feet from the stage.
it was ironic, given the climate, that our local tv weatherwench, terri deboer, introduced the girls. terri puts the "bland" in bland rapids. so the girls come out, no exciting fashion statements, as it was just down right chilly. long sleeved shirts and black pants. they opened with tether. because of my syndrome, can't remember sh*t, i can't remember the set list in order, but i'll do my best to run down what i remember:
tether
heartached for everyone
fill it up again
free in you
something real
perfect world
all that we let in
dairy queen
rise up
yield
tangled up in blue (yeah!)
shame on you
ghost (yeah again!)
power of two
least complicated
go
trouble
tried to be true
closer to fine
encore:
moment of forgiveness (nice!)
gallileo
deconstruction might have been in there, too...or maybe that's just my wishful thinking.
they were tight, sounded great. the girls appeared to be truly grateful that everyone was out there toughing it out. personally, although i truly enjoyed myself, i felt the crowd was a little bit lame...they just didn't have the fire in their bellies that i've come to expect at indigo girls concerts. the lack of political activism and enthusiasm is something that really annoys the heck out of me here in this republican town, and the folks were true to form last night, as well. sigh. however, since we were up front, we were in the heart of the positive indigo vibe, and the people standing near the stage were singing their hearts out and rockin'! i met some great people up there. favorites include tangled up in blue (saw them do that in detroit a few years back...wow!), ghost, fill it up again, all that we let in...oh hell, i loved it all.
and, i hung around long enough to get a yellow pick.
thanks for reading.

hey all,
just a quick update. jodie moved to a regular hospital room sunday evening! room 708b. she'll probably be staying in this room for the next couple weeks until her surgery. it's not home, but it's not the icu. it's better for her spirits. she 'has' to do more now on her own, so it helps her get stronger and better. obviously, though, noone is pushing her. she knows what she can do. thank you again everyone for all your words of wisdom and kind thoughts.
peace, melissa

looks like a live version of all that we let in will be on this benefit cd.
i found some info here: _http://thedent.com/more.php?id=1582_0_1_0_m_
(http://thedent.com/more.php?id=1582_0_1_0_m)
on a side note, i was at starbucks the other day and they had a sarah
mclaughlin cd called 'music that matters to her.' basically, it has no sarah songs,
just a bunch of songs that she loves. well, love's recovery made the cut!
and before i knew it, it started playing in the store and i even noticed a few
customers singing along!

in an effort to keep the ig on the radio..............court reverses fcc =
media=20
ownership rules=20
by seth sutel, ap business writer
new york - a federal appeals court on thursday largely reversed a landmar=
k set=20
of rule changes from the federal communications commission (news - web si=
tes)=20
that would have allowed companies to own more radio and television statio=
ns=20
in the same market.=20
the decision by the u.s. court of appeals for the third circuit in=20
philadelphia marked a major setback to the fcc (news - web sites)'s effor=
ts=20
to deregulate media ownership rules and a victory for public interest gro=
ups=20
that had opposed the measures.
the rule changes have been the subject of much debate about the concentra=
tion=20
of media ownership ever since they were announced in june 2003. the=20
plaintiffs against the fcc said the rules would limit the diversity of vo=
ices=20
on the airwaves, while the fcc said the old rules had become outdated.
the court also kept in place an order it made last september blocking the=
=20
rules from taking effect.
in their 2-to-1 decision, the judges threw out rules that would have allo=
wed=20
greater ownership of television and radio stations in the same market.=20
however, they also found that the fcc was within its rights to repeal a=20
blanket prohibition on companies owning both a newspaper and a television=
=20
station in the same city.
"this is a big, big win for diversity," said andrew jay schwartzman, ceo =
of=20
the media access project, a washington, d.c.-based public interest law fi=
rm=20
that led the lawsuit against the fcc.
"the court recognized that debate and democratic values are more importan=
t=20
than letting big media corporations grow bigger," schwartzman said. "it's=
=20
especially important that the court has told the fcc to remove its=20
deregulatory thumb from the scales."
schwartzman said he was slightly disappointed that the court did not reve=
rse=20
the fcc's move to repeal the ban on cross-ownership of newspapers and tv=20
stations in the same city, but he noted that the court asked the fcc to=20
reconsider the decision in light of thursday's ruling.
fcc chairman michael powell called the court's decision "deeply troubling=
" and=20
said it "hampers the flexibility of the agency to protect the american=20
public."
powell noted that the court's chief judge anthony scirica dissented from =
the=20
ruling, saying that the court "has substituted its own policy judgment fo=
r=20
that of the fcc and upset the ongoing review of broadcast media regulatio=
n=20
mandated by congress."
but consumer advocates and other opponents of the fcc's efforts to deregu=
late=20
media ownership were quick to hail the court's decision.
gene kimmelman, senior public policy director for consumers union, one of=
the=20
plaintiffs, called the third circuit court's ruling "a complete repudiati=
on=20
of rules that would allow one or two media giants to dominate the most=20
important sources of local news and information in almost every community=
in=20
america."
fcc commissioner michael j. copps saw the decision as vindication of his =
vote=20
against the rules. "the rush to media consolidation approved by the fcc l=
ast=20
june was wrong as a matter of law and policy," copps said.
"the commission has a second chance to do the right thing. we must immedi=
ately=20
move forward and redesign our media policy," he said. "this time we must=20
include the american people in the process instead of shutting them out."
the cross-ownership issue had been closely watched by newspaper publisher=
s=20
that also own tv stations, such as tribune co. and media general inc. bot=
h=20
companies are pursuing strategies of owning clusters of newspapers and tv=
in=20
the same market.
john sturm, ceo of the newspaper association of america, said the group w=
as=20
pleased that the court left in place the fcc's decision to repeal the=20
across-the-board ban on cross-ownership. he said the industry would conti=
nue=20
to press its case for making such combinations possible.
the court's ruling does not affect a separate issue of national limits on=
=20
broadcast ownership. last year the fcc raised the limits on the size of t=
he=20
national audience that can be reached by a single owner of tv stations fr=
om=20
35 percent to 45 percent, but congress later passed a law that put in pla=
ce a=20
cap of 39 percent.=20

hi folks.
this is quite distressing - and unbelievable that it has not received any
mainstream coverage. i actually thought it had to be an urban legend - but
i went to the site, www.georgewbush.com (the official web site of the
president's campaign, not any sort spoof) and as the email i received
showed a 1:40 (approximately 100 seconds) web based ad that attacks the
liberal moveon.org as leftist propaganda on par with hitler. far from being
a subtext open to possible interpretation, it is as blatant as it could
possibly be.
this is offensive as a disabled and queer american, as they came for the
disabled and the homosexuals before or while they came for the jewish. it
is an overt and contemptuous attack on the survivors of the holocaust, on
the democratic party and on the american people for such a ridiculous
analogy of imagery.
please forward this to everyone you know - this is not a urban legend -
bush is using images of hitler, kerry, dick gephardt and michael moore in
this ad. it is ridiculous and insulting, and hopefully major civil rights
and disability rights groups will call on the producers of this ad to
apologize.
to my friends who may be receiving this on decidedly anti political
listservs - i'm not endorsing anyone for president - i'm simply pointing
out a major, and scary, use of questionable symbolism that would be
offensive to a large part of the population. my hometown has dealt with
hate groups well, it is awfully scary that this is on a official web site.

church 'protect marriage' day is urged=20
groups backing amendment seek focus on sunday before senate vote=20
by alan cooperman
washington post staff writer
saturday, june 26, 2004; page a24=20
gearing up for a july 12 senate vote on a proposed constitutional amendment=20
against same-sex marriage, evangelical christian leaders yesterday urged=20
churches across the country to declare july 11 "protect marriage sunday."=20
=20
in an e-mail to supporters, the rev. jerry falwell predicted that "thousands=
"=20
of churches would participate. he called on all pastors to "lift up the=20
god-ordained institution of marriage in their sermons" and to hand out cards=
=20
listing senate phone numbers, "making it very easy for people to call their=20=
senators=20
the next day."=20
james dobson's focus on the family, gary bauer's campaign for working=20
families and the rev. donald e. wildmon's american family association are al=
so=20
promoting the event. in its "pastor's weekly briefing" yesterday, focus on t=
he=20
family listed some of the problems "that may arise" if the constitution is n=
ot=20
amended to ban same-sex marriages:=20
"the words 'husband' and 'wife' will be meaningless. . . . our kids will be=20
taught how to perform 'safe sodomy' in their sex education classes. . . .=20
churches will be pressured to either abandon the scriptures or lose their ta=
x=20
exempt status if they refuse to 'marry' homosexuals," it said.=20
gay rights advocates accused evangelical leaders of resorting to scare=20
tactics.=20
"no religious organization will be forced to marry same-sex couples" if the=20
constitution remains unchanged, said cheryl jacques, president of the human=20
rights campaign. "it's very telling that they have to lie in order to attemp=
t to=20
stir the passion of their followers."=20
since massachusetts became the first state to issue marriage licenses to gay=
=20
couples on may 17, conservative leaders have been lamenting the passivity of=
=20
their grass-roots supporters. falwell's e-mail quoted paul weyrich, chairman=
of=20
the free congress foundation, as saying that "too few calls, too few letters=
=20
and too few faxes are coming into" senate offices "in defense of marriage=20
between a man and a woman."=20
growing numbers of religious leaders, however, are weighing in on both sides=
=20
of the issue. bishop wilton d. gregory of belleville, ill., president of the=
=20
u.s. conference of catholic bishops, yesterday endorsed the constitutional=20
amendment and urged all roman catholics to lobby for its passage.=20
twenty-six religious groups, meanwhile, have sent a letter to congress=20
opposing the amendment. "it is not the task of our government and elected=20
representatives to enshrine in our laws the religious point of view of any o=
ne faith,"=20
said the june 2 letter, whose signers included leaders of the central=20
conference of american rabbis, the episcopal church usa, the evangelical lut=
heran=20
church in america, the presbyterian church (usa), and the sikh council on re=
ligion=20
and education.=20

gang - as a stalwart anti-bush democrat, i gotta
tell you, that this ad does not compare kerry to
hitler. just trying to clear up a misconception.
there was an ad with hitler and it was actually
one that was entered into a contest that was
sponsored by the pro-democrat moveon.org, but
didn't win, and was never used by the democrats,
moveon.org or anyone else. the original ad
actually compared bush to hitler - not kerry.
what the bush ad is doing, is showing what they
consider to be the 'ugly' side of the democrats.
they show clips of angry democrats, and a clip
from the anti-bush ad that included hitler's
image. the point of the ad is that in today's
age, america doesn't need pessimistic images like
this, and yadda yadda yadda, pretty music and a
picture of the flag and george bush are displayed
as if to symbolize optimism and hope.
just wanted to make that clear. though the ad is
somewhat confusing if the background is not
known.

this was my first time at chastain, and luckily my girlfriend knew enough to bring ponchos. (all the seating is out in the open) i had gotten soaked in the pride parade earlier (torrential thunderstorm) and was glad to keep a little drier. the girls seemed tired, but it was an amazing show.
highlights: midnight train to ga, tangled up in blue, tried to be true, love's recovery, emily's prom date (i went to high school with that guy. i went to prom with you. you were a good prom date. i had a good time at prom. hope you're enjoying your life.) and the pride flag drapped over some of the equipment on the side of the stage.

just a quick added note.......i have seen 50+ shows and this was one of the
best set lists i have seen. lot's of nostalgic selections plus great stuff
from the new record. their version of 'go' was
extraordinary....blistering........
(does anyone have the exact set list?)
i didn't think the girls seemed tired, just relaxed in their home
environment.
i have to say this as well, amy's voice is the absolute best i have ever
heard it....simply phenomenal. and emily looks the best i have ever seen
her. very healthy and happy.
apparently their high school track coach was also there........
a fantastic night despite the rain (which finally cleared for good just as
the girls were coming on).

chastain is probably my least favorite place to see ig. the crowd is always
subdued (lots of regular members who aren't particularly ig fans; i always seem
to get lousy tickets there these days; for 5000+ people, there's an amazing lack
of energy.) sunday's crowd (despite/because of being drenched by rain all
during the opening act) was better, but where i was sitting the people around me
didn't even stand up for "galileo" at the very end of the encore. ig was great;
the crowd was lame.
on saturday, amy did a great new song that might be called "love is a
kindness". has that been played before anywhere else before? [i know there was
a song she did at the red chair a while back that didn't make it onto atwli, but
i thought the name of that one might be "will you cover for me" or something.]
do any of these two songs ring a bell with anybody?
the opener saturday was three5human, which actually turned out to be the same
nucleus (singer trina meade and guitarist tomi martin) from a band called stereo
popsicle that has opened/played with them before. they have a great sound --
did a nice cover of stevie wonder's "front line" -- but, unfortunately for them,
there's almost no market for black rock bands.
the opener sunday was roman candle. they did nothing for me, although the
lead singer did a fine job with the guest vocal on "closer to fine". amy got
mixed up and invited them on stage one song early so they came out for ?"least
complicated"? and just kind of stood around.
all things considered, i'd have much rather had cordero and sugarland as the
two openers. (has sugarland ever opened for ig?)
i had a really weird (non-ig) moment on sunday. for whatever reason, i had a
"premonition" three months ago about hearing a particular (non-ig) song as part
of the warmup tape at this show. i've been thinking about it for weeks. i
didn't hear it saturday, but when i walked in on sunday, that very song was
playing over the pa at the exact moment i walked in. i just busted out laughing
at the bizarreness of it -- i'm sure people thought i was crazy or something.
i know it was just a coincidence, but it was the kind of moment that makes you
want to believe in the impossible.

i'm back on the west coast after a very early morning flight (and veeeery delayed) out of atlanta. i'm too tired to type anything coherant. but wow. last night's show... i've been to over 70 ig shows, and despite being at chastain (ick!), last night's show blew me away! for sure in my personal top 5. the setlist was great. and the rain soaked crowd up in the pit was so much better than saturday's (at least i didn't get yelled at... ;) ). a and e were both super happy and in great form. it was adorable how emily's prom date was there (along with the shamrock high track coach!). i had an excellent time.
thanks to dee for getting me tickets. and all was good... we all were able to move into the pit. yah!

fyi on sugarland - nice idea on them as openers, i don't believe it has
happened....and it's unfortunately doubtful to happen as mercury records is
pointing them hard in the direction of the country demographic. they have
been opening for vince gill and terry clark among others. don't see ig
fitting in that scheme! of course, you never know!

its been my experience that getting down into the pit is very easy at=20
chastain. some tables never get taken, while others get vacated. i always=
=20
find it rediculous that people will pay 260 bucks for a table and leave=20
before the headliner plays. but thanks to them, my wife and i got a table=
=20
four rows deep from which to watch amy and emily and to celebrate our 5th=
=20
anniversary. chastain looks great but all the yapping, is taxing. funny t=
hat=20
that show is supported by the atlanta symphony, yet people talk through t=
he=20
entire show. i cannot imaging that that would go over well at a symphony=20
performance. i like the idea of picnicing under the stars, but i think th=
at=20
the picnicing should be done on the law in the back of the house. unlike =
an=20
airplane flight, there are no size restrictions on anything being brought=
to=20
chastain. some folks will bring a steamer-trunk with a pantry full of foo=
d. i=20
would have thought that fire codes wouldn't allow you to block an entire =
row=20
with your cooler. it's actually funny to watch folks try to wedge those=20
things into the row and then decide where to put their feet. a few years =
ago,=20
emily said that she had just seen joni mitchell at chastain and she would=
n't=20
let people picnic. its obvious why.
three5human was pretty good, trina can definitely sing, and seeing them o=
pen=20
was a tip-off that midnight train to ga was going to be sung, stereo pops=
icle=20
did it in nashville with ig a few years back and again at a show at the=20
tabernacle.=20
i always wonder why they play chastain, i guess just because it outdoors.=
it=20
seems like last year they just did the one show at the gwinnette center??=
=20
well as bad as chastain is it's better than an arena. i imagine sunday wo=

have been better since it wasn't part of the classic chastain season pack=

hopefully labeling the subject line as such, i can get away with asking=20
everyone that has seen the film what their opinion is.=20
i caught this film on friday, and i left feeling a little less than moved=
=2e=20
when i left the theatre following seeing bowling for columbine(bfc), i wa=
s in=20
a bit of a trance, and i thought it would be even more so following this.=
i'm=20
not sure why f911 was different. bfc was the first michael moore thing th=
at i=20
had scene, i have now seen many of his projects. im not sure if he is jus=
t=20
less shocking to me now or what. to me f911 didn't live up to the hype. i=
=20
thought we were going to get some smoking guns that would derail the=20
presidents chances of getting re-elected. it feeling like a commercial st=
unt=20
equivalent to mel gibson doing a film about christ.=20
to me it seemed like if you watched the film objectively, then you would =
be=20
hard-pressed to agree with everything. i didn't find myself sympathizing =
with=20
bush, i just felt more like so what, we knew that he was a crooked=20
politician. it did however seem like a low blow to say that bush did the=20
wrong thing when he stayed in the classroom with the kids after the first=
=20
tower was hit, i don't know what he could have done. he looked to me like=
he=20
was quite distressed. the commentary seemed to be out of context in that=20
scene to me. maybe that was supposed to be a microcasm of what was to com=
e, i=20
don't know. anyway, that scene knocked things out of whack for me. made m=
e=20
question the context of other things. i think everything was true, just i=
n=20
the right context some things look much worse than they would in a differ=
ent=20
context.=20
it was entertaining but not much more. cannes must have had some real dud=
s=20
this year for it to be the best film. anyway, i'm still processing it all=
,=20
what do you folks think?=20

hey everyone,
just wanted to let you know what's up. well, friday night jodie was transferred back to the icu at st. joe's. she's now in room 20. her heart rate was very high (140's) and she had been running a fever of about 104. her fever is better. they drained fluid from her abdomen. she had another ct scan today, and a chest x-ray. she also had a blood transfusion yesterday. no surgery soon. she is very upset about being in the hospital for so long. her spirits are pretty low. school is out now for me, so i can spend more time with her. she is very weak again. her breathing is still good, though. well, that's it for now. sorry this is so disjointed. keep praying and thinking good thoughts! thanks.
peace, melissa

he was told about the first plane on his way to the school. he was told about the second plane when he was in the classroom. he stay at the school for 30 min. more instead of getting out of there and not putting the kids there in danger.
don't ask me to prove it because i am sick of having to prove everything i say and the mainstream media does not. research it yourselves. prove what i say is wrong.

i kinda agree with todd - i also think after you've seen a bunch of indie
non mainstream films (some of the bbc iraq war stuff makes f/911 pale in
comparison) there isn't a whole lot "new" compared to some of the stuff you
saw in bowling - no gun movie was made like bfc was - but the focus of bfc
was really scattered compared to roger and me or down size this. f-911 was
way more focused
but f-911 was also really well researched - unlike bfc and the editing
(sometimes dubious) in bfc doesn't seem to suffer in f-911 - i mean - i
think bfc made you walk out of the film amped up to change the world. i
felt like the world was just too messed up and it was really somber after
seeing f-911...it is a different story, it is oblivious his target is set
on bush, it is obvious that he got some incredible war footage that really
makes one think. moore made a film that takes nonmainstream themes and
makes it easier for people who dont watch democracy now, fs-tv, see indie
films like the fog of war, anything by alex jones, radio free maine or
indymedia and makes it easy to watch.
plus he is proving there is a market for lefty films. which is good. so -
go see it and get educated.

propoerty) from the front lawn to the garden theater. you should get new tix in the
mail automatically, but if you went through a broker or got them any other way,
you will need to contact the person you purchased them from. if you have
questions, montalvo's # is 408-961-5858
