hey everyone,
jodie had her surgery on tuesday. it was from 2:00 p.m. (est) to 8:00 p.m. it was a very long, tough day. very tough. her surgery was supposed to take four hours, but it was more like 8. she had 7 drains put in. they were unable to remove her gall bladder because her bowel was very inflamed and her gall bladder was pressed very tightly against it. the surgeon said if he tried to remove it, he could have made a hole in her bowel. so, he left it in for now. he got out much dead/infected tissue. there was a lot. that's why it took sooooo long. he was not able to completely close her abdomen due to her swollen organs. if he tried to squeeze them back in, it would have made it too difficult for her to breathe. so, obviously, she will be having surgery again, soon. hopefully, they will be able to get her gall bladder out this time, and get the rest of any dead/infected tissue.
jodie was very scared and was very concerned that she would die. her doctor had not indicated any possibility of it, though it was there. during the surgery, the doctor had to make sure he didn't puncture any of her blood vessels. however, her blood vessels could still erode and get a hole from the pancreatitis. hopefully, nothing like that will happen, and she will just get better.
thank you for those of you who have been praying for her. thank you, thank you, thank you! continue to pray for her. she will still be hospitalized for a while yet, undergoing more surgery, and has much recovering to do. thank you.
peace, melissa

hello everybody,
jodie's white blood cell count has been coming down over the past few days. that means the infection is going away. since she had the infection they had to do surgery on her right away to get rid of it. otherwise, she probably would not have made it. but, the surgery seems to have done what it needed to. now she just needs to have another surgery. hopefully, to get her gall bladder out this time and get any other dead/infected tissue. hopefully, also, her organs won't be too swollen and they will be able to fully close her abdomen. eventually, her drains will be taken out also, non-surgically. they are also now irrigating her abdomen through two of her drains. they're not being used as drains anymore. instead, they are putting in a solution saline and betadine to keep things clean. her fever has come down, also, to a low-grade fever. jodie is such a strong person. i am so proud of all the hard work she has done fighting this and toughing through all this. she h
as done such a good job. her next surgery is tentatively planned for some time this coming week.
thank you to everyone who has emailed me sending your support and letting me know you're praying for jodie. i told her today that when she gets home she is going to get very spoiled. i told her she will be able to go anywhere and do anything she wants. to that, she told me she wants ice water. she has only had ice chips. she really just wants to be able to drink water, preferably ice water. of course, she can have as much ice water as she wants once she is healthy and out of the hospital. :)
peace, melissa

olivia launches lesbian honeymoon cruise
by lisa leff
.c the associated press
oakland, calif. (ap) - judy dlugacz knew she was onto something when the
cruise ship she had chartered for 400 lesbians arrived in the turkish port of
kusadasi.
instead of meeting rejection, as they sometimes did in the united states, the
travelers got a red carpet welcome from merchants eager to do business with
the ''lovely lesbian ladies.'' the half-million dollars they poured into
turkey's economy made the front pages of istanbul's major newspapers.
''when hundreds of women get off a ship and go shopping, they are noticed,''
dlugacz (du-loog'-atch) said.
four years later, the venture dlugacz founded as a tiny women's record label
in 1973 - named olivia after a character in a lesbian-themed pulp novel from
1949 - is making waves again.
olivia cruises and resorts, the oakland-based ''lifestyle company,'' produced
a boston-to-montreal wedding celebration and luxury honeymoon cruise this
weekend for 1,200 women, featuring grammy-winning singer k.d. lang as
entertainment.
the ship, holland america's ms maasdam, set sail saturday night from boston.
the honeymoon excursion was announced in december, less than a month after
the massachusetts supreme judicial court's ruling that gays and lesbians could
obtain marriage licenses in the state. after legal challenges that threatened
to block the unions, the weddings commenced may 17.
''it's been fun having customers call you and say 'i'm going on my
honeymoon,' and it's not just a metaphor,'' said amy errett, olivia's chief executive
officer.
co-owners errett and dlugacz both married longtime partners during the month
same-sex couples were able to tie the knot in san francisco earlier this year.
in march, olivia became the first business owned and operated by gays to
sponsor a professional athlete, signing an endorsement deal with golfer rosie
jones on the lgpa tour.
olivia also has worked on making its vacation offerings as sophisticated and
diverse as the tastes of its frequently misunderstood market.
this fall, for example, showtime's lesbian drama ''the l-word'' will film
part of an episode aboard an olivia cruise to the caribbean. cast members are
scheduled to socialize with guests at the company's first shipboard film festival
and be serenaded by shawn colvin and indigo girls.
another upcoming trip, set at a resort in mexico, is a sports-themed vacation
featuring golfer jones, tennis pro rosie casals and swimmer turned
broadcaster diana nyad.
securing such talent doesn't come cheap, but neither do olivia's vacations,
which range from $599 to $14,000 per person. errett says her customers, who
have an average age of 46 and an average annual income of $80,000, want
world-class accommodations and entertainment.
''it's an interesting and much more educated group than people think,'' she
said, acknowledging that much of straight america still views lesbians as
favoring flannel shirts and inexpensive country living.
despite its increasingly upscale image, olivia has maintained the strong
social mission that was at its core when dlugacz founded the record label, which
became produced pioneering lesbian singers cris williamson and meg christian.
for many guests, an olivia vacation is the first time they can openly hold
hands and kiss while they travel.
''it is not just music and it is not just travel,'' she said. ''there is also
the piece of serving a community simply by creating a place to be free.''
the entrepreneurs already are making plans for olivia's next incarnation, a
series of gay and lesbian retirement communities that mirror the company's
resort-chic image.
''i like to think of us as the lesbian disney,'' said errett.

hi, all. it was my plan to go to boston this weekend for the k.d.lang
orchestral concert at the fleet pavillion. but i was in a pretty serious car
accident a couple of weeks ago, and my car was totalled. it doesn't seem prudent to
be making a road trip so soon, financially speaking. so it makes me sad, but
i guess i need to sell my tickets. i got them the night of the girls'
concert, and it was a special deal--i bought two tickets for only $20! i'd be happy
to sell them for what i paid if anyone would like to use them. please e-mail
me privately. thanks--gina

since vicki shared hers, i just want to pipe up that when i was shopping
the other day, i heard "peace tonight" in musak form (instrumental elevator

so, has anyone heard on their folk-friendly radio stations, "fill it up

. . . was listening to some of my older music last
night, and this one, a favorite of mine, brought tears
to my eyes - especially the third paragraph. i guess
it can be a little igc, because they believe the earth
is precious too.
some of them were dreamers
and some of them were fools
who were making plans and thinking of the future
with the energy of the innocent
they were gathering the tools
they would need to make their journey back to nature
while the sand slipped through the opening
and their hands reached for the golden ring
with their hearts they turned to each other's hearts
for refuge
in the troubled years that came before the deluge
some of them knew pleasure
and some of them knew pain
and for some of them it was only the moment that
mattered
and on the brave and crazy wings of youth
they went flying around in the rain
and their feathers, once so fine, grew torn and
tattered
and in the end they traded their tired wings
for the resignation that living brings
and exchanged love's bright and fragile glow
for the glitter and the rouge
and in a moment they were swept before the deluge
let the music keep our spirits high
let the buildings keep our children dry
let creation reveal its secrets by and by, by and by
when the light that's lost within us reaches the sky
some of them were angry
at the way the earth was abused
by the men who learned how to forge her beauty into
power
and they struggled to protect her from them
only to be confused
by the magnitude of her fury in the final hour
and when the sand was gone and the time arrived
in the naked dawn only a few survived
and in attempts to understand a thing so simple and so
huge
believed that they were meant to live after the deluge
let the music keep our spirits high
let the buildings keep our children dry
let creation reveal it's secrets by and by, by and by
when the light that's lost within us reaches the sky

hey everyone,
well, jodie's fever has gone away, which is another sign that her infection is going away, too. her dressing on her abdomen was due to be changed today, but the doctor got called away for emergency surgery. so, either tonight or tomorrow they'll change the dressing.
jodie's spirits are not well. when i came in to see her this evening (i had also seen her earlier today) she put her pointer finger up to her temple, her hand shaped like a gun, and put her thumb to her hand, indicating she wanted to die. not good. also, her nurse, off-handedly let me know that 'earlier she said she wanted to kill herself." when we first arrived at her room, i noticed both her doors were wide open, as if she had been taken out of the room. she wasn't however. so, i closed the doors, as they usually are, because her room seemed warm and the temperature in her room is kept lower than the rest of the hospital. as we were about to leave, the nurse opened the door again, saying "i'm sorry, i have to keep this door open. i know you probably were trying to make it quiet, but i have to keep an eye on her at all times because earlier she said she wanted to kill herself." all i could think was, nice way of letting me know. nothing like being direct, telling m
e as soon as she saw me, or calling me as soon as it happened. you would think that would be something you would tell family members. apparently not.
actually, however, i had feared that she might start to feel this way, especially since her surgery. she really does not like the breathing tube. they have been trying to wean her off of being intubated, but have not been able to. i know it's very frustrating and discouraging or her. there is no date set yet for her surgery. hopefully, it will be sooner than later. eli and i just want her to be home and better. i know she does, too. it really sucks that everything seems to take so long and she has to go through so much crap. nothing we can do about it, except just wait it out and deal with it, jodie most of all. we have it very easy compared to her.
her pain seems to be being handled a little better. i know she has been in much pain, and the meds she was getting only seemed to last for an hour, but she was getting pain meds every four hours. now she is on a constant drip. so, hopefully she will be able to sleep more soundly and restfully and not wake up once and twice a night, asking for pain meds. she hasn't been sleeping more than three hours at night. hopefully, she will seem more awake and strong when she is awake, instead of barely being able to keep her eyes open and looking like she hasn't slept in 2 days.
so, please, continue to pray for jodie. pray for her healing and to lift her spirits and to bring her comfort and rest. thank you!
peace, melissa

milwaukee without the band.
spike: your spelling is notorious, but banned and band
are two different words - lol!

thank you so much for allowing the human rights campaign to communicate with
you
frequently during this unprecedented fight to stop the federal marriage
amendment.
senate votes next week -- call your senators: 1-877-762-8762
call your senators!
1-877-762-8762
turn up the heat on your senators now. we must get 250,000 people to speak
out against the federal marriage amendment before the vote next week. let us
know you called:
http://www.hrcactioncenter.org/ct/ppa2sb91ubyb/
if the switchboard is busy, please keep trying or click here to look up your
senator's direct line.
dear heidi,
the senate votes on the discriminatory federal marriage amendment next week.
and until then, i must ask you to do everything you can to make sure your
senators vote against it. this is the most important vote we have faced in decades
-- we must win. and we can win, if every fair-minded american commits to speak
ing up this week like never before.
step one:
call both your senators, right now, and every day this week. senators
sarbanes and mikulski are hearing from the opposition in droves. drown them out. here
is the number:
1-877-762-8762
when you call, ask for one of your senators by name. when their office
answers, state your name and address and urge them to oppose the federal marriage
amendment. then call your other senator immediately and do the same. not sure
what to say? click here:
http://www.hrcactioncenter.org/ct/ppa2sb91ubyb/
if the switchboard is busy, please keep trying or click here to look up your
senator's direct line:
http://tinyurl.com/3dk8j
step two:
let us know you called. it is critical that we keep track of our numbers and
reinforce them to senators with our education and lobbying. click here:
http://www.hrcactioncenter.org/ct/ppa2sb91ubyb/
step three:
tell your friends. tell your family. tell your neighbors, co-workers,
dog-walker, anyone with whom you have regular contact ... this is it. this is the
moment that you can't hold back. just forward this message or click here:
http://www.hrcactioncenter.org/ct/epa2sb91uag9/
thank you - again - for all you are doing to stop the federal marriage
amendment. i don't think i need to remind you about who and what we're up against.
the ultra-conservatives behind the federal marriage amendment are
better-funded, extremely well-organized, and deeply determined to make their shameful,
discriminatory agenda law. they will stop at nothing. that's why our combined
efforts this week must be stronger than ever before.
we're glad you're with us.
cheryl a. jacques
human rights campaign president
p.s. we know that the ultra-conservatives are targeting people in certain
states: indiana, ohio, louisiana, alaska, nebraska, arkansas, north dakota, and
south dakota. do you know anyone in any of those states? please, urge them to
contact their senators today. click here:

due to one of my housemates suddenly deciding to move out, i find
myself with an extra ticket for the ig show in seattle on july 24
(saturday). it's a general admission ticket (they all are, i believe),
and since we didn't buy it from ticketbastard, i can sell it for the
face value of $35, without any extra charges tacked on.
i know there are still tickets available to the event, but if anyone's
interested in taking this one off my hands, i'd appreciate it.
let me know!
