hey everyone,
well, i like to write poems. i have written a few recently. they are usually about significant things or people in my life. i realized i hadn't written one about jodie, so i figured no better time than the present. i thought i'd share it with those who don't know her, but have been keeping track of what she's been going through. it mostly doesn't rhyme, which is intentional, because i just get even more cheesy when i rhyme. although, the rhythm and meter is ghastly. but, it's all heart. so, anyway, here it is.
jodie, my precious angel
you've been my best friend and loyal partner,
for all these years,
i don't know how to begin to thank you,
for being so wonderful to me.
you've always been so kind,
to me and everyone,
i will always admire how dear you are,
to all who know you.
you never cease to amaze me,
with everything you know,
i don't know how you do it,
and yet you are so humble.
no matter how many times i've disappointed you,
you always have forgiven me,
and though it just seems crazy to me,
your love for me just grows.
you're so loyal and forgiving,
your faithfulness knows no bounds,
a greater love and partner,
i never could have found.
how i've been so fortunate,
to have found you to be mine,
i'll never, ever, ever know,
so, i'll just thank the lord divine,
i am so sorry,
for all the pain i've caused you,
how you can still love me, is just beyond me,
but, i'm eternally thankful that you do.
again and again, you amaze me,
with your kindness, forgiveness, and love,
i don't know how i could ever repay you,
for everything you've been to me.
i want you to be so happy,
and feel so very loved,
i'll do whatever i can,
to fill your life with joy.
thank you, my dear, sweet, angel,
for being mine,
and always loving me.
thank you for always putting up with me,
and never forgetting the me you know and love,
though i've shown you sides of me,
i never would have dreamed existed.
thank you for never giving up on me,
for always giving me another chance,
to be the better person,
you knew that i could be.
you are more than understanding,
you are a truly precious gift.
i wish i could take back all the years,
i caused you pain and trouble.
i'm sorry it has taken me so long,
to be able to look outside myself.
i want to give you back,
everything i've taken from you,
while i've been tending to my wounds.
i want to be the best me,
that i can be, for you,
to return all your love to you,
tenfold.
please know that i'll always be with you,
always by your side,
to comfort and encourage you,
to journey together with you, wherever we may go.
i love you,
my precious angel,
and i always, always will.
you are my heaven on earth.
thanks for reading. melissa

hey all,
i just got back from going to the emp (experience music project) in seattle.
for all of you who don't know what emp is, it's a huge museum dedicated to
popular music. anyway, they have a new exhibit called 'songcraft' and there
are a bunch of cool artifacts from ig! there are some the original handwritten
shame on you and ghost lyrics, first-reaction comments from russell carter
about some of the songs on rites of passage (kind of a letter to e and a about
what he thought), and even an original swamp ophelia cover (looks way
different). there was also a huge poster with ig on it and some other things, but i
can't remember it all.
anyway, if you go to the emp, make sure and check it out! totally awesome!

hey everyone,
well, i just wanted to let you know that jodie had another surgery yesterday. this one was much simpler and shorter. she was in surgery from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on friday. the main goal of the surgery was to try to close her abdomen more, if not completely. as i understand what the surgeon told me, she is more closed, but still not completely. i think her internal tissues/skin is back together but her outer, surface skin is still not connected. so, it's much better, but still not completely closed.
the nurse explained to jodie, before her surgery, that the surgeon was going to do exploratory surgery, basically to see what was going on inside her abdomen, looking for any abcesses or more dead/infected tissue. he said he 'cleaned her out,' which i guess means took out any dead/infected tissue he found. he said it would take an hour and a half, and it did. i imagine there wasn't too much more dead/infected tissue since it didn't take as long as her first surgery.
she seemed pretty alert just hours after her surgery, surprisingly. she still wasn't very alert, but for her, how she's been the last few days, it seemed more alert than before surgery even. but, still, compared to any 'healthy' person, it was pretty sedated. i am feeling better knowing that her abdomen is more fully closed. i wish it was completely closed, but i'm still thankful for what we've got.
eli does get to see jodie in the icu. he sees her pretty much every day, in fact. we don't stay for hours and hours every day. mostly he just finds visiting jodie at the hospital 'boring.' but, i can't blame him. he mostly watches cartoons on the tv to keep himself occupied. there really isn't much to do at the hospital with jodie, especially since she can't even talk, because she is intubated. hopefully today or tomorrow she will be able to be extubated. the respiratory therapist said she had been doing a good job on the 'wean' mode during the day, keeping her lungs strong. so, hopefully she won't have to endure the torture of being intubated for too many more days... thank you for your continued prayers and thoughts.
peace, melissa

hey intimate strangers,
i woke up 6am yesterday, to drive down to san diego and take a hike at the
cabrillo state monument, and it was a beautiful day for it. went to enjoy
the view from point loma, and took pictures, waded in tidepools.
then, as i drove up to humphrey's by the sea restaurant, i could hear amy
singing soundcheck. i didn't recognize the song, but it must have been let
me go easy. then i met a couple from the bbs ig board who helped me find
spike (karen), selar, caramia, and ld. we enjoyed dinner--had tomato salad,
or lobster bisque, then fish and 'shrooms in ravioli, with delicious key
lime cheese cake and chocolate decadence to end.
we relaxed after dinner, and had drinks. shawn mullins opened, and he was
sweating up a storm, until the spotlight was turned off for his last few
songs. he sang his hits, let it shimmer let it shine, a few old and new
songs, and then ended with rock-a-bye. (i wonder if he's tired of playing
that song.) he came out later and sang with the girls on kid fears and
played/sang on ctf.
the setlist:
fill it up again
become you
power of two
perfect world
the wood song
ozilline
least complicated
dairy queen
come on home
yield
collecting you
let me go easy
get out the map
heartache for everyone
something real
shame on you
let it be me
kid fears (*with shawn)
closer to fine (*)
encore:
romeo and juliet
galileo
humphrey's concerts tend to be sit-down events, (oh yeah we had this debate)
and our small contingent in the c front section, stubbornly held our ground
during fill it up again--dancing and singing. through yells of "front sit
down" from a guy seated a couple seats down the row. we sat after security
asked us. but then, popped up again during the uptempo songs, especially
the traditional crowd favorites.
lindigo had her request sign, romeo & juliet on one side, and ghost on the
other. amy said that they had left question marks in the setlist to fill up
with requests.
emily read a letter from an eight-year-old named chloe faulkner--she said
her favorite songs are go, power of two, perfect world, and one other song.
chloe said that it was her first concert, and also drew a picture for emily.
emily held it up for us to see--but i couldn't tell what chloe had drawn.
afterwards, sulli threw pics up in the air, the demands for the setlist
popped up, and in the midst of it, i saw spike walking like someone pissed
her off...apparently, one of the security guards pushed the crowd back, and
she fell. amy saw it from offstage. spike then talked with her, and also
the security manager. sulli threw the setlist in the air, and i fell back
trying to catch it, but it was caught a couple people down from me. then i
felt foolish afterwards.
it was great to hear amy and emily again--can't wait until tomorrow.
diane - if you want to hear more details, they are on the bbs.

mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
dear moveon member,
in less than 48 hours, congress will vote on an
amendment to the u.s. constitution that would
permanently deny marriage equality to same-sex
couples. this is unprecedented -- never before has our
constitution been amended to take away anyone's
rights. we've got to fight back.
please sign on to our emergency petition to congress
to stop this divisive amendment at:
http://www.moveon.org/unitednotdivided/
then please ask your friends and family to sign, by
forwarding them this email. we'll deliver our comments
tomorrow, before the vote, so we need as many people
as possible to sign on today.
president bush campaigned on a promise to unite us,
not divide us. yet today, as people are questioning
bush's handling of everything from the war in iraq to
the economy, bush and his friends are trying to
distract voters from the real issues by turning to the
politics of division and hate.
if america stands for anything, it stands for equal
rights and opportunities for everyone. throughout our
history, we've struggled to guarantee that equality:
ending slavery; securing voting rights for women; and
passing the civil rights act just 40 years ago.
equality in marriage is the civil rights issue of our
generation. we can't let anyone, or any group, be
singled out for discrimination based on who they are
or who they love.
when two people make a deep personal commitment,
taking responsibility for each other and doing all the
work of marriage, they should be able to share in the
legal benefits of marriage as well. these benefits
include access to health care and medical
decision-making for one's partner and children,
parenting and immigration rights, inheritance,
taxation, and social security benefits.
this isn't a partisan issue, notwithstanding bush's
pandering to his right-wing base. former president
gerald ford, a republican, said this about same-sex
couples and marriage: "i think they ought to be
treated equally. period."1 also, many major
corporations, including chrysler, ford, general
motors, disney, coors, and ibm, offer health insurance
and other benefits to their employees' same-sex
partners. senator lincoln chafee (r-ri) says the
amendment is "nuts... to be seen as the party that's
coming between two people that love each other doing
what they want to do... to me that's going to be seen
as a liability, politically."2
yet president bush is bent on moving america backward,
by enshrining discrimination in the united states
constitution.
don't let him divide us like this. go to:
http://www.moveon.org/unitednotdivided/
please help make sure your friends have signed on too,
before we deliver this petition tomorrow.
thank you.
sincerely,

i had to work until 7 o'clock, so i seated myself during the last song of
shawn's after dinner. there were boats, kayaks, and raftboats laced
together outside the venue floating on the pacific ocean--i watched them
paddle up to enjoy some free music by amy and emily.
setlist:
1. perfect world
2. fill it up again
3. gone again
4. power of two
5. jonas and ezekial
6. get out the map
7. heartache for everyone
8. free in you
9. land of canaan
10. closer to fine (with shawn)
11. driver education
12. watershed
13. yield
14. ghost
15. dairy queen
16. least complicated
17. go
18. virginia woolf
19. kid fears (with shawn)
encore:
20. all that we let in
21. galileo
wardrobe:
last night--amy was wearing her black shirt with chinese dragons on it over
jeans, and emily was wearing a plaid shirt opened up with the wax bush tee
underneath over jeans also.
tonight--emily wore this satin-y maroon long sleeve shirt over dark gray
pants. she had this leather wristband or watch with metal diamond shaped
things on her strumming arm. amy wore a red tee over her red plaid (with
other colors) white background comfy pants.
amy and emily expressed how they like playing in san diego. they love this
town. and they were bantering a bit (amy) about choreographed jokes that
would be said now, emily said, "yes, being counterverbal". toward the end
of the night, they thanked the people in the boats who were docked by the
restaurant and venue on the pacific ocean.
songs:
there were a few repeats, of course, but highlights were jonas and ezekial,
free in you, land of canaan, amy's new song (played solo) called driver
education; watershed, ghost, go, and virginia woolf.
amy, before playing driver education, she talked about shawn mullins, who
had just finished playing ctf with them. and how he is in the group the
thorns with matthew sweet and pete droge. her nephew has heard she and
emily sing and play--now he wants to move on past the girls, the singing
girls, to hear the singing boys! to a role model.
they accommodated requests again: watershed was played instead of cold beer
and remote control, and ghost instead of leaving.
driver education reminds me of when i was a teenager when i "crashed cars"
and took the driving test. it's a fun little upbeat song. on the setlist,
it said, "amy solo"
after the encore, (all that we let in was beautiful!) amy bent down to
shake a few hands, so did emily--and em passed out a few picks, too! sulli
floated the two setlists over the people in front.
thanks to bbs peoples, i was able to wait with the small crowd of 10 near
the backstage room at the bottom of the stairs to the pool. security guard
came by with his keys and little unimportant uniform, and asked, "are all of
you guests of the hotel? show me your room keys--" and everyone was
reaching for theirs, and he said, "well, i can't kick you out then."
well, thanks.
shawn first came out, and signed autographs. he is so awesome. i prefer
his voice so much more than that canadian band, crashtest dummies.
then about 15-20 minutes later, amy decked with her black-thin framed
glasses, came out and signed autographs, and declined to be photographed.
oh well. amy said, "i was just about to go to bed." i was so happy i
bought a t-shirt, amy drew a little guitar with a peace sign on it next to
her signature. someone asked her to play "cover for me", and amy said,
"it's a quiet song, has to be at a quiet venue. maybe vancouver."
i almost forgot! amy signed a stuffed animal gator on its tummy: "sweet
dreams amy" and later, emily signed [a drawn heart] emily above it.
another fan says, once to amy, then repeats it with emily, a story about how
he sang on stage with them "closer to fine" back at a mid-west show a few
years ago.
a couple minutes later, emily comes down, all smiles, wearing her black wnba
shirt. emily signs away on cds, signs, and my white ig shirt (the one with
little clips of jaime hernandez's illustrations from the album cover).
emily also is gracious and chats with us. at one point in the conversation,
emily says, "yes, see us [instead of taking a regular vacation], we're
getting old..."
old?!? ay yi yi.
at the end, someone says, "wax bush!" and emily says as she signs her last
autograph, "wax the motherf*ucker!" and we laugh!
what a great night.

yeah but people on capitol hill pretty much agree there is no plausible way
of it ever passing the senate, let alone becoming ratified.
what i am upset about is all the possible outing of legislators, nothing
like fighting oppression with oppression?

amy and emily are on the cover of this month's lesbian news.
they have a brief interview in the magazine that discussed politics as much as music. it was a nice cover shot, but i think it was taken by epic during the "become you" photo sessions.
i grabbed a handful of them last night. anybody want one?

mike was referring to the actual number of senate votes - which is the number i care about at this point. it was reported today (in the washington post) that republicans are conceding that passage is beyond their reach. there is even concern that it won't get a majority - hence the republican efforts to change the admendment's wording at the last minute.
i personally won't breathe easy until the votes are counted, but things don't look good for the gop on this one - regardless of the support they have from the religious right.

great show, the second night was better than the first, i thought.
amazing new amy song, might be called drivers education. we got to hear at sound check the first night (and better yet see it from our room which overlooked the stage, very exciting)and then hear it on stage the second night. no one had heard of the song before that night, (not even spike) so maybe she hasn't played it before...dunno.
now, i dislike shawn mullins, but he was an amazing addition to kid fears.
selar, it was nice to meet you.
emily looked beautiful in her shiny shirt, and amy was wearing flip-flops which means, dear god, i saw her toes, my life is now complete.
see everyone in la and berkeley--btw, if anyone has a good pair of tickets to the greek, please let me know!

just saw this over at atrios' blogsite. (the source is credible, i checked it.) as one who has campaigned against this, it saddens me greatly:
posted by holden
the bush administration is forging ahead with their plans to store 77,000 tons of radioactive material with a halflife of 300,000 years in nevada despite a ruling that safeguards at the yucca mountain storage facility are inadequate.
the bush administration will proceed with a plan to build a nuclear waste site in nevada this year despite a court decision ordering it to prevent radiation leaks for more than 10,000 years, a senior energy department official said on tuesday.
critics of the project, including senate minority whip harry reid of nevada, say this recent federal court ruling could permanently derail a plan to build a massive underground storage depot beneath yucca mountain about 90 miles northwest of las vegas.
the administration said, however, that it does not intend to slow down.
''we are still on track toward submitting a license application in december of this year, and opening the repository and beginning waste acceptance in 2010,'' deputy energy secretary kyle mcslarrow told a senate energy committee hearing on nuclear energy.

hey all,
well it's been a few days since jodie's second surgery. it will be a week on friday. she is healing well. i actually got to see her incision. it is a good 12 inches long from the bottom of her sternum down to about her 'waist.' i have a very short torso, so i don't think i even have 12 inches between my sternum and waist. it goes up pretty high. she has "retention" stitches. which look like a string about three inches wide with a small plastic tube which goes across her incision. it's hard for me to describe. >--[======]--< but it kinda looks like that. the [====] is the little tube. basically, the nurse told me, that she'll heal from the inside out, to her skin. it will take a while. i have had stitches numerous times in my life. but, never any serious stitches like these. obviously, i've never had any serious 12 inch incision, either.
but, it looks like we're done with surgery for now. hopefully, jodie will heal up, get some of her drains taken out, and start to get out of her bed again. once she regains her strength and can move around better and all her internal stuff gets back on track, like she can eat and drink normally again, then we'll be looking for her to be able to go home to continue to recover. we don't know how long it will be. it won't be soon, that's for sure. seeing that she's already been in the hospital for 6 weeks, another 2 weeks doesn't seem that long. it may be more or less, we have no way of knowing. it just depends on how long it takes for jodie to get back to normal, or at least closer than she has been. she looks better and better every day, though. ever since her second surgery. she has just looked remarkably better. ever since she has been off the ventilator (sunday morning), things have been seemed a lot better, because she can talk again. that really helps to resto
re some sense of normalcy and wellness, her being able to communicate more easily, and just knowing that she doesn't need a machine to ensure that she is breathing effectively. that's really scary to have to be in that situation. it's scary for me, just knowing she needs it to survive. and, i'm sure it's even scarier for her, i can't even imagine.
she's been able to actually express in words what she had been feeling as far as thinking about dying. basically, she thought she was going to die, and thought that was what the doctor's thought, too. her nurse last night told her that that was never a consideration because she is only 29. the nurse said that if she was 80, it would have been more likely that they would have thought she wouldn't make it. but, the nurse said that since she is so young they knew she was going to get through it because a young body is stronger and can take a lot more. however, i have had both surgeons warn me of the possibility of her dying, not that it was likely, but that it definitely was possible. i told her that i wish i could lie in the bed in her place. she said, no, you don't want to. i said, i know it's horrible. but, i just wanted to be able to give her some relief for a day or an hour, just so she could get a break. that made her cry. which, at first, i felt bad about. rem
inding her how tough it was, or how tough i knew it was for her. but, really, she knows way more than i do just how hard it is. but, she actually said it was good to cry. i know that there have been times when this has really put her in a bad mood because it just sucks to be so sick for so long, with no forseeable end. and she told me she hadn't been able to cry. so, when i made her cry, she was actually appreciative. it's just so hard because the doctors and nurses tell you you'll get better and eventually be done with being sick. but waiting and waiting and waiting just gets frustrating and wears you out. it's hard.
but, i definitely have faith that she'll get better. i do see an end to it. it may not be very close. but, i know it's there and i know this won't go on forever. so, i am actually in a much better mood. i am excited to see her incision heal, and am looking forward to her being able to get out of bed and walk around. i know it will be tough for jodie. but, every bit she's able to do, even if she struggles at it, is just one more thing closer to normal and back to full health. it will be a long recovery for jodie, but i will be there for her no matter what, always encouraging her and supporting her and reminding her how great she is doing. i feel like i always need to remind her how great she is doing, because she is getting better, little by little. for her, it just seems like an uphill battle that never ends. but, i see her progress, and i will always remind her that she is doing an excellent job, even though she always feels like it is just hard for her to do anyt
hing.
i told her that i will be spoiling her from now on. so, she better get used to the idea. it's long overdue. i told her to think about what she wanted to do or where she wanted to go. the only thing she has come with, the only thing she wants it for us to go to toronto to get married. i just watched the latest episode of queer as folk last night and it was so meaningful to me. jodie and i lived for eight years in pittsburgh and our favorite city is toronto, we've been there twice. it is funny because qaf is actually filmed in toronto and last night they were having a charity bike race from 'toronto to pittsburgh.' so, in the show they 'go' to toronto to start the race, but actually, they've been in toronto the whole time. and when they go around to the bars, they keep remarking how the 'gay' street and the gay bar remind them of the same places in pittsburgh. it's so funny. toronto's gay scene, their 'gay' street, church st., is so much bigger and better than pittsb
urgh's liberty ave. but, i was had a grand time watching that episode, with all it's irony and then michael and ben got married. when we went to toronto we went by city hall a time or two and jodie pointed it out to me. i was like, how do you know that's city hall?! then they showed the building right before the close-up shot of the guys exchanging vows and rings. it was so nice to see. because, those are jodie and i's plans. i can't wait to tell her about the episode.
