the federal marriage amendment is dead
which is the good news.

the bad news is in the house, the republicans, badass as they are snuck
a last minute proposal called marriage protection amendment through, the
word
that there was even a vote didn't get out until this morning,

the bill passed, so now if this goes through the senate (i don't know if
it
has or not.) states will be left to decide
who gets to marry and who doesn't...at
least...that's how i understand it..

don't those fuckin jerks get it? well
at least all the homophobes are happy!

odds are, a good percentage don't care one way or the other.  they're
more concerned with lining their own pockets and stirring up homophobic
sentiments is one way to ascertain that a certain segment of society
casts their votes in the 'right' way...

all politicians love emotional issues that produce knee jerk reactions.
if people really thought about the mess this world is in, they'd all but
a handful end up unemployed...

hey all,

well, jodie is now up to 9 drains.  she has had 3 more added and one removed.  they think she has another infection.  they may have to do another sugery on her if the infection doesn't clear up through drains and antibiotics.  hopefully, she is done with surgery for now.  yesterday, she was worried after speaking to one of her doctors.  she asked him if she was going to die.  he said, 'maybe.'  and nothing else.  she asked a doctor, who only 2 days before she said she thought was crazy.  i asked her why she would ask him that question when she has little belief in him to begin with.  she says she doesn't know.  but, it worried her still.  we talked with her nurse about what the doctor said.  he told her that it is up to god's will and her will to live.  i asked the nurse if the doctor was speaking in general terms, of people with severe pancreatitis, or if he meant according to jodie's particular medical case.  the nurse said he probably meant in general terms.  he also said
that her surgeon thinks that since her surgery she has a better chance of getting out of the hospital and getting better than not.  the doctor she spoke with, however, gives her a 50/50 chance of making it out of the hospital.  well, i have joined an online pancreatitis support group and am going to be giving them all the info i can about jodie and asking a lot of questions that i have.  hopefully, that will be helpful.  i asked jodie if she felt optimistic or wished she could feel optimistic.  she said the latter.  i told her that i am optimistic and that i do believe that she will get better.  well, if you'd like to send her a card or anything, the address once again is jodie virago, room 20 msicu, st. joseph medical center, 7601 osler dr., towson, md 21204.  please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.  thanks!

peace, melissa

the marriage protection act is a bill -- it was in committee for some time
and came up for vote in the house yesterday (7/22) -- that proposes to strip
federal courts (including the supreme court) of jurisdiction over cases
challenging state and federal domas (ie, laws "protecting" states from
having to recognize same-sex marriages legal in other states).

the bill -- which is unconstitutional on its face -- passed the house and
now goes to the senate.  if it passes the senate, lambda will challenge it
as soon as they can.

you can legislate a lot of things, but you cannot legislate to exclude a
particular group of people from the court system.

this is another one of the republican tactics to divert the attention (and
the resources) of lgbt rights organizations from fighting to reclaim more
rights for lgbt citizens.  even though they know that the law is a loser,
it's forcing us to spend time and money to overturn it.

the fact is they are in a position of leadership, and as leaders...they
could be educating their homophobic
constituents the truth that all people
are created equal....

but instead cowards that they be, they
choose to perpetuate lies,leading their
constituents to believe in the hypocracy that says some of us are
created equal.

and while it may prove unconstitutional
in court......the damage is already done.

and i'm not saying that i think they'll do that btw,  in fact i know
they won't  because they never do, and they don't because they are
spineless.

galileo

the weather was unusually warm for seattle-- the high on friday was 96
degrees (summer temps are usually in the 70's). it was a beautiful evening
and emily commented that it must be a pleasure to live in this city. amy
added that it rains in georgia, noting that they recently had three weeks
of rain there. someone in the audience said that wasn't much compared to
eight months of rain in seattle. amy acknowledged that it doesn't rain when
they come to seattle and went on to say that they were just engaging in
"idle conversation, trying to connect in another way besides music". an
audience member shouted out "it's working!" that made amy laugh.

emily was wearing an anti-bush t-shirt. someone in the audience asked to
see it so emily held her guitar away for all to see and said "that's
exactly how i've felt every day since bush has been in office". i was at a
bad angle so someone else will have to describe the shirt.

amy broke a string on the first chord of go. she remarked that she takes a
razor blade to the strings just before the show so they will break easily
(joking). emily commented that amy has never, in all their years together,
broken a string on the first note. sully was on stage with a replacement
guitar within seconds.

they played ozilline last night and what i love about hearing this song
live is how they get the audience rocking to the fast parts but then bring
everyone to silence and stillness-- almost a reverence at the end of the
song. it was like a prayer. so very beautiful.

some folks had gifts for emily and amy announced that emily had celebrated
a birthday the day before. emily used her fingers to indicate to the
audience that she was 41 years old (four fingers on the right hand, one
finger on the left) and said she felt great.

between go and collecting you, amy mentioned something about "feeling a
good spirit". i think she was referring to the feeling of the music, the
people, the place. it was magical.

as usual, someone in the audience shouted out a request for galileo. amy
said "you don't need to waste your requests on galileo -- we will *always*
play galileo... (looks at emily then continues)... for at least three more
years or so.

there was a raffle-- winner got to sing ctf with the girls and 2 runners up
get free t-shirts. the raffle benefited a seattle organization, home alive,
which is an anti-violence project (they raised $1500 last night). the
winner was named ann. ann joined them on stage to sing ctf and after she
sang a few bars emily exclaimed to the audience, "she can sing!" and that
was no lie-- the audience applauded each time ann joined in on the chorus.
kim richey also sang but i don't think she knew the words. when amy came
out for the next song (first song of encore) she commented "that was fun"
referring to ctf. ann, if you are reading, you were awesome!

okay, i'm done for now-- someone tell us what emily's shirt said.

this was emily's shirt friday night:

http://www.americastore.com/buagt.html

she said today that she has 18 anti-bush shirts.

the whole indigo line community really came through for me today. i lost my
wallet and my ticket for tonight's show. i was able to get a ticket voucher
from the box office (never pay cash for tickets!! order online!) and some
cash from a family member who worked nearby. before all this was settled
though i recieved multiple offers from people for cash or tickets. we
already know indigo girls fans are the best, but boy howdy, your kindness
and generosity really rocked my world today and made a stressful situation
less so. i thank you all.

i'm not going to do a review other than mentioning amy sang romeo & juliet
tonight and it was so incredible. i was a puddle of goo on the floor by the
time she was done.

i can't believe i didn't take a pen with me!  i always take a pen so i
can write down the setlist, but i spaced it out this time.  okay, so,
no setlist posted by me (anyone else?), but here are the highlights.

the pier is such a beautiful setting -- right on the water in seattle,
with the skyline of downtown serving as a backdrop.  surprisingly
little city noise interfering with the show, and an amusing number of
sailboats, kayaks, and yachts pulling up near the venue to get a free
listen.  a&e both looked great.  i was sitting too far back to give a
good fashion report, but they were both wearing jeans and t-shirts, and
i'm so glad that amy has finally found a non-embarrassing hairstyle for
the past couple of years.  :)

they opened with hammer and a nail, and the set included watershed,
ghost, chickenman, heartache for everyone, dairy queen, and tether.
amy _was_ going to do brown eyed girl (as a segue from shame on you?),
but forgot.  romeo and juliet was a request...  jeez.  i really wish
i'd taken a pen.

they were doing some kind of fundraiser raffle, and the winner got to
come onstage and sing with ig for ctf.  i don't know of she could sing
or not -- she seemed so enthused to just be up there that she seemed to
spend more time bouncing to the music than singing into the mike.

it was a great show.  the power of a&e, even as an acoustic duo,
overtook the crowd, which was quite chatty for the first couple of
songs.  by the time 20 minutes or so had passed, however, most of that
conversation had died out and the girls had everyone's total focus.
they invited the crowd to rush the stage, which they were more than
happy to do.  i do wonder when and if i'm going to get to see them
perform with a band again, though.  it seems like it's been a long
time.  :)

on a side note -- my "monkees world tour 1967" t-shirt has been
officially my most commented-upon shirt for some years.  i was quite
amused when i went "down to the astroturf" to have a quick cigarette,
and was immediately surrounded by 5 people, all of whom wanted to talk
the monkees.  :)  very strange, but fun.

hey everyone,

jodie had two more drains taken out that were not draining anything.  so, she is down to 7 again.  her doctors were planning on going into surgery either today or tomorrow, as of friday.  however, as of yesterday (sunday), jodie told me that they are probably not going to do surgery because her white blood cell count is decreasing, which is a good thing.  it means that the infection is subsiding, or that the antibiotics she's getting are actually able to attack the infection and are getting rid of it.  this is good news.

basically, if she can remain infection free, all she needs to do is just keep healing, regain her strength, and get back to being able to eat and drink normally.  granted that won't happen quickly or easily, but it will mean that she will be better and done with this fiasco of a health crisis.  no matter what happens, surgery or no surgery, less drains or more, i just care about jodie coming out healthy and alive at the end of it.  she has been through so much and i just want her to be able to get through everything.

she also had another blood transfusion last night.  her hematocrit level was low again.  which means the percentage of red blood cells in her whole blood was not as high as it should be.  so, they gave her more blood, well, red blood cells, actually.  she also is now getting a shot to help her make more blood, once a week.  she is no longer receiving oxygen during the day, just at night.  another good thing.

jodie did have a bad experience, however, the other day with a nurse.  she was in the process of moving from her bed to a reclining chair, with the help of her nurse and a tech.  jodie said that they were standing beside her, but did not hold on to her or help her to support her weight.  she ended up falling to her knees, without any help.  her nurse immediately started saying "shame on you" over and over to jodie, acting as if jodie intentionally and willfully "threw herself" on the ground.  for what purpose, i have no idea.  basically, as i see it, the nurse messed up and tried to act like jodie was just being obstinate and child-like.  as if someone who has been critically ill for weeks is going to purposely harm themselves when they've been getting out of bed just fine for a week.

well, it was a big fiasco.  jodie couldn't get up.  her nurse explained to the charge nurse that she "refused" to get up.  when i finally heard about what happened, i got the nurse supervisor in to listen to jodie's side of the story.  jodie let them know what happened and that the nurse said "shame on you" three times as soon as she fell and that it made jodie feel horrible.  jodie said this in tears.  it obviously affected her very seriously.  i'm sure you could imagine what it would feel like in her situation.  so, jodie requested that she not have that nurse again, which the supervisor said was no problem.  the supervisor said she would talk with the nurse.  i felt bad because i wasn't there to do anything about it at the time.  but, mostly i just felt bad that it happened at all.  it's just so ridiculous.  finally, jodie was put back in bed by three hospital guards who lifted her off the floor.  that part is just so ridiculous.  it's as if she had to be 'handled' by the
people whose job it is to take care of the 'riff-raff.'  the whole thing was just unnecessary and sad.

well, besides that, things have been as good as they can be.  jodie just wants desperately to be out of the hospital.  she says it's driving her crazy to be there.  i understand completely, i'm sick of going there myself.  but, at least i get to leave and spend most of my day elsewhere.  she's stuck there 24/7, and for good reason.  the best thing for her now is for me to visit as much as possible, because its less boring and mind rattling if i'm there, too.  i do the best i can, but it's never enough.

thank you for responding to my email and for your prayers.

peace, melissa

i got a message from move-on about an album being released
called "future soundtrack for america"  and just seems as though
there is a group missing from the list.

the album features a pretty amazing line up of artists: blink-182,
bright eyes, david byrne, laura cantrell, clem snide, death cab
for cutie, mike doughty, the flaming lips, fountains of wayne,
jimmy eat world, ben kweller, the long winters, nada surf, ok
go, old 97's, r.e.m., sleater-kinney, they might be giants, tom
waits, will.i.am of the black eyed peas, and the yeah yeah yeahs
are all featured. in addition, the family of elliott smith contributed a
mix of "a distorted reality is now a necessity to be free," a song
from smith's as-yet-unreleased last record, and the first release of
new material since his death in late 2003.

dear charis booklovers and supporters,

in these hard times for all independent feminist bookstores,
we wanted you to know about what's happening with our sister feminist
bookstore, wild iris books, the last existing feminist bookstore in
florida. please see the letter below (and if you're interested in
buying the store, contact them!)

subject:   the continuity of wild iris books

our tireless feminist workhorse, dotty faibisy, has accepted a
position at the guardian ad litem office, which offered great
benefits, including health insurance and a retirement package.
since dotty can't continue to operate the bookstore and work her new
job, she has put the bookstore on the market. wib cannot operate past
september 30th, at which time it will be closed if no buyers come
forward. we must mobilize immediately!!

as you know, the bookstore has served as a salon for writers,
artists, photographers and entertainers, a meeting place for
feminist groups including judy levy now, and a community switchboard
for women in crisis. a fundraiser was held there for kathy
freeperson, which insured that her dogs were cared for--and some of
that money ultimately went toward her burial/cremation. the
bookstore has given so much to the community for so long, and we
have been tremendously blessed for the past eleven (11) years.

gainesville has the only feminist bookstore left in florida, and as
activists, we must do everything we can to keep this precious,
irreplaceable resource!

there will be a first organizational meeting at 1225 nw 4th st,
gainesville, fl at 7;00pm, thursday, july 29, 2004 at barbara
esrig's house.  others will follow.

for more information, contact sallie ann harrison at 352-338-1050 or
ellen allen at 352-473-2447. in sisterhood and solidarity

no, i really think it is tanner:

"my friend tanner she says 'you know me and jesus we're of the
same heart the only thing that keeps us distant is that i keep
fuckin up'" i said,  "come on down to chicano city park wash
your blues away...."

at least that's the punctuation that i use lol!!  or is it this
way:

my friend tanner she says, "you know me and jesus we're of
the same heart."  the only thing that keeps us distant is that i
keep fuckin up.

it just seems to make more sense to me "my" way since it
follows with amy saying i said, "come on down to chicano
city park wash your blues away ..."

sure wish they would put some punctuation and spacing in
their lyrics. sure would clear up some things.  i think we need
to take a poll. does amy or tanner keep fucking up?

punctuated this way, it's tanner commenting on her relationship with
jesus.

> my friend tanner she says, "you know me and jesus we're of

punctuated this way, it's amy commenting on her relationship with
tanner.

i'd have to say, i prefer the first punctuation.  after all, the point
of the song isn't about failings in personal relationships... it's
about failing to meet higher ideals expected by society and oneself.

scary!  i think not...the enthusiasm was for the game--not the gun.  and if you must know, the "gun" reference has to do with the outdoor sports in which i partake--and nothing else!!

isn't it "the _junkie_ girl"  ?  although that makes for an awesome
misheard lyrics submission....

personally, i'll go with the leaping man who asks me why.  (well your
rhythm is off, i reply!)  since i feel quite out of synch lately.  :-)

well, it's funnier as "chunky girl!"

hey, this reminds me of a thread we had a few years back where we were quoting misheard ig lyrics.  i know we've heard these before, but some of them were hilarious!
example:  in sots, emily says, "we'll give the finger to those we pass on the way out of town!" (as opposed to "we'll leave the figuring to those...)  :0
