hello and happy monday to you all!

here's a quote from the ellen show newsletter:

<<thursday, august 26

actress meg ryan gives ellen the blow-by-blow about her film, "against the
ropes." actor/model jason lewis shares secrets about the finale of the hit
series "sex and the city." plus, the indigo girls perform song "perfect
world" from their cd "all that we let in.">>

so, here's my question. is this a new show or a rerun?

have a great day!

peace, michele

about 15 minutes into the show.

it originally aired back in march, 2004.

meg ryan had just released that boxing film "against the ropes" and ig sang "perfect world".

i think i still have the entire episode on tape somewhere.

hey everyone,

it has been a while since my last email.  but, i don't like to send out emails too often, especially if there isn't much to say.

well, emotionally, i think jodie has done remarkably well for being stuck in the hospital for so long.  i can hardly stand to go there every day.  i know it makes her feel better to not be alone all day.  but, it's just sooooo long and so frustrating.  again, yesterday, she was saying she just wants to go home.  i know it.  she knows she can't.  but, i know it's how she feels, so i figure at least if she says it, it can help let off some of the pressure of the whole situation.  but, all in all, she's just been withstanding it very well, i think.  such a prolonged and no-end-in-sight hospitalization is really, really tough to deal with.  i know how it is for me, and couldn't imagine having to be jodie in this situation.

anyway, away from the emotions, and strictly back to the medical nuts and bolts.         friday evening she was to be transferred out of the icu, after 11 p.m.  at around 11:20 she vomited, which she had been doing all day, and aspirated, also.  they didn't know what had happened for a while.  all of the sudden her blood/oxygen saturation rate just dropped to the low 60s.  below 90 is not good.  i have never seen her levels below the high 80's.  and this was just immediate, no gradual decrease.  she was put on oxygen, via a nasal canula, at 10 liters, then they added a mask.  her sats stayed right where they were for about 15 mins.  around 20 mins, she started to slowly improve. by about 45 mins she was in the low 90's.  she was given a breathing treatment, and within an hour a half, she was back at 99%.  the next morning she was breathing room air again.  it was scary because they weren't sure what caused her sats to drop.  they were considering the possibility of a pulmonar
y embol
ism, which i don't know what that is exactly, but from the sound of it, it seems pretty serious and bad. she was x-rayed and taken for a ct scan.  i went home before the ct scan at around 1 am.  i talked with her about it yesterday and she remembered none of it.  i told her what happened. she didn't even remember that i was there through all of it. consequently, i went to bed at 4 am, got up at 5:45 pm, and didn't visit her again until sunday morning.

today she is having a procedure to remove the gall stones from her gall bladder.  finally!  since she has been nauseous a lot over the past week and throwing up on and off.  they are hoping this will help stop the nausea and vomiting.  i saw her abdomen incision last night, it had been about 3 weeks, since i last saw it.  i try to keep enough
time in between peeks at it (during dressing changes) to allow for healing and change.  it does look much more healed.  it still is very sensitive and painful for jodie, just when the dressing is changed.  it still has several more weeks to fully scar over and heal.  but, it's well on it's way.  i really hope she doesn't need to be reopened
in the same place and have to go through the healing process again. i couldn't imagine that they'd cut her open again in the same place.

she still is draining a lot of fluid out of each of her drains, from her third surgery.  it seems to be in endless supply.  it's as if it just is self-propagating.  i don't know, but that's what it seems like to me.

well, i guess that's about it for now.  thanks for your responses and prayers.  if you'd like to send a card (or ???) the address is:  jodie virago, icu room 20, 4th floor, st. joesph medical center, 7601 osler dr., towson, md 21204.  thanks!!!

peace, melissa

i heard ctf on wplj a few weeks ago and stunned, i called the radio
station to ask the dj if i was really hearing indigo girls (on an
otherwise pop music station) or if my reception wasn't getting mixed up.
the dj affirmed that they were indeed playing ig.  i asked why did they
just now decide to play ig, given that the song in question was more
than a decade old.  she replied that they conducted a focus group and
listeners really "liked a lot of our older stuff."  lol!

i urged her to give atwli a whirl ...=20

cheney's comments on gays draw fire
by todd dvorak, ap

davenport, iowa (aug. 25) - vice president dick cheney, whose daughter mary

after he distanced himself from president bush's call for a constitutional
amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
at a campaign rally in this mississippi river town tuesday, cheney spoke
supportively about gay relationships, saying "freedom means freedom for
everyone,'' when asked about his stand on gay marriage.
"lynne and i have a gay daughter, so it's an issue our family is very
familiar with,'' cheney told an audience that included his daughter. "with the
respect to the question of relationships, my general view is freedom means freedom
for everyone... people ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship
they want to.
"the question that comes up with the issue of marriage is what kind of
official sanction or approval is going to be granted by government? historically,
that's been a relationship that has been handled by the states. the states have
made that fundamental decision of what constitutes a marriage,'' he said.
bush backs a constitutional amendment prohibiting gay marriage, a move cheney
says was prompted by various judicial rulings, including the action in
massachusetts that made gay marriage legal.
"i think his perception was that the courts, in effect, were beginning to
change, without allowing the people to be involved,'' cheney said. "the courts
were making the judgment for the entire country.''
addressing bush's position on the amendment, cheney said: "at this point,
say, my own preference is as i've stated, but the president makes policy for the
administration. he's made it clear that he does, in fact, support a
constitutional amendment on this issue.''
those comments drew criticism from the conservative family research council,
with president tony perkins saying: "i find it hard to believe the vice
president would stray from the administration's position on defense policy or tax
policy. for many pro-family voters, protecting traditional marriage ranks ahead
of the economy and job creation as a campaign issue.''
perkins added that if cheney sees a problem with activist judges, "then how
can he not endorse the same solution the president and his pro-family allies
have proposed? we urge vice president cheney to support president bush and a
constitutional amendment on marriage.''
steven fisher, spokesman for the human rights campaign, a gay and lesbian
advocacy group, said cheney's remarks show a stark difference with bush's efforts
"to put discrimination in the constitution.''
"president bush is feeling the heat. the administration has been using gay
americans to drive a wedge into the electorate. there are millions of american
families who have gay family members and friends, who are offended by the
president's use of discrimination,'' fisher said.
last month, lynne cheney said states should have the final say over the legal
status of personal relationships, a comment that came just days before the
senate failed to back the ban.
cheney said the amendment did not have the votes to pass, but he also said
the federal defense of marriage act, which president clinton signed into law in
1996, may be enough.
"most states have addressed this and there is on the books the federal
statute, the defense of marriage act, passed in 1996, and to date, it has not been
successfully challenged in the courts and may be sufficient to resolve the
issue,'' the vice president said.
the cheneys have two daughters, both of whom are working on the campaign.
mary cheney is director of vice presidential operations for the bush-cheney
re-election campaign. she held a public role as her father's assistant in the 2000
campaign and helped the gop recruit gay voters during the 2002 midterm
elections.
during the 2000 campaign, vice presidential candidate cheney took the
position that states should decide legal issues about personal relationships and that
people should be free to enter relationships of their choosing.
sens. john kerry of massachusetts and john edwards of north carolina, oppose
the amendment. the democratic candidates also oppose gay marriage, but defend
a gay couple's rights to the same legal protections as those conferred in
marriage.

i will hear gwbush apologize for misleading us on the wmd issue before i ever hear ig on a radio station here in milwaukee (other than our public station which plays them quite frequently on a local show that proceeds world cafe). however i did hear perfect world the other day on the overhead while picking up dog food at a pet supply store.  do artists get royalties for that? i assume so.

i heard ctf on wplj a few weeks ago and stunned, i called the radio
station to ask the dj if i was really hearing indigo girls (on an
otherwise pop music station) or if my reception wasn't getting mixed up.
the dj affirmed that they were indeed playing ig.  i asked why did they
just now decide to play ig, given that the song in question was more
than a decade old.  she replied that they conducted a focus group and
listeners really "liked a lot of our older stuff."  lol!

i urged her to give atwli a whirl ...

stores that play cds are supposed to pay ascap/bmi general payments, but
many do not.  depends on if it was a chain or a small independent.  most
chains pay because they are more likely to be fined if they don't.

i just couldn't help commenting here.  are there *really* people who care
more about not letting certain people marry than whether we bomb other
countries or whether we go into economic depression?  i find that
extremely hard to believe, and if it is an accurate portrayal of his
constituents sentiments, people are more ridiculous than i had ever
thought.  also, please tell me how an "activist judge" is different from a
constiutional amendment imposing marriage law on states?  either way, the
decision is not being made by the people.  aren't republicans supposed to
be for localized control rather than centralized?

sorry for the rant, but please.

just got some details on the bloomington, indiana show in october.
from the buskirk-chumley theater website
(http://www.buskirkchumley.org/):

wednesday, october 13
buskirk-chumley theater and wtts presents
indigo girls
7:30 pm
$35 general admission
tickets on sale thursday, september 9

the theater is a restored old-style movie theater and seats about 600
-- a very nice place to see a show. (i've seen lots of cool shows here
before -- carrie newcomer, rickie lee jones, dar williams -- and it's
always quite nice.)

i think i will take the afternoon off work so i can get a decent seat,
since it's ga. hate to use up the vacation time, but would hate
sitting way in the back even more. :)

anyone else in the vicinity who might be coming?

cheers,

9. three hits

oh yeah.  the only way i could possibly be more excited is if it was

(incredible band, by the way.  a live show with those three kids is
really something to see -- and i'll be seeing them at the hollywood bowl

i've been dying for an indigo girls tribute album. pickin' on is not
quite that but it will do.  the link on amazon that was posted says the
cd is not yet released.  then the jr.com site below says it was
released early this week.  so i went back to amazon and typed in the
title under search and it does show it being available.  but more
importantly it has sample clips of a few tracks.   slight
disappointment as i envisioned cool bluegrass music with actual new
singing arrangements.  turns out it's just instrumentals of ig's songs.
they sound cute but not too exciting.  in fact, i'd go out on a limb
to call it ig muzak!  kind of your instrumental elevator music.   that
might be a tad harsh.  other opinons?

and on the jr site i was shocked to find an ig song on a dance
compilation.  a shed your skin dance remix?  i couldn't believe it.  i
swear it was there along with joey mcintyre's remixed song and other
pop artists.  this could be the start of a dream come true.  all ig gay
guy dancing music.  i can dream....

actually, there are 5 remixes of shed your skin.  along with the more
widely distributed tom morello remix, there was a white label remix 12"
put out by epic during the promotional curve of sots.  i got a copy off
of ebay, and while it's not brilliant, i'm pretty thrilled to have a
copy of it.  there's at least one really good remix on it, and the
others aren't bad, but they're not gripping.  i wish junior vasquez
would do an ig remix of something.

that's if you think nickel creek is bluegrass, no offense.

of course, i have to say that i'm excited as shit for this, as you all
have already guessed.  i'm a huge bluegrass fan, but almost as
importantly, i think it's a big compliment to be included in the "pickin'
on" series.  all the popular names in pop country have been "picked on"
but outside of country it's names like zeppelin, springsteen, the beatles,
widespread, dylan, clapton, etc.  not to mention blink 182 (ha!).  so i
see it as a big deal even if the music seems like muzak to some.  to me
it's awesome, although, i do prefer the clawhammer to the five string.  :)

yeah, nickel creek is a good band, but they're more newgrass/folk/pop than any
sort of trad bluegrass.
