in case you haven't heard, i got this story by josh grossberg from the ap newswire. melissa e. is acting again:
-scott

maybe they'll call it the m word.

melissa etheridge is taking a break from music and taking a stab at the small screen, signing on to headline a half-hour abc sitcom whose storyline echoes the raspy-throated rocker's own openly gay love life, her rep confirmed wednesday

the untitled comedy won't be autobiographical, however. instead, it will see etheridge--who came out more than a decade ago--playing a lesbian music teacher, who suddenly finds herself in the role of a mom when her sraight guy roomie invites his teenage daughter to live with them.

emmy-winning sopranos executive producer brad grey and that '70s show writer-producer linda wallem will supervise production on the series. wallem will also write the pilot.

the project from 20th century fox tv and brad grey tv was the subject of a bidding war among the broadcast networks, which the alphabet ended up winning.

abc's script commitment to the series is a part of a revamped strategy to raise itself out of the ratings dungeon, where it's dwelled the last several years. the net has already rebounded a little this season thanks to the premiere of j.j. abrams' adventure series lost, the highest-rated debut for an abc drama in nearly a decade, and the continuing success of extreme makeover.

musicians have become popular fodder of late with tv execs. abc's deal for the etheridge comedy comes a day after fox announced it was teaming up with the barenaked ladies for a variety show.

the series will mark etheridge's first major acting credit. her only previous thespian experience was voicing a character in hbo's 1999 gay duck cartoon the sissy duckling and playing a hooker in the 1994 indie flick teresa's tattoo, directed by former partner julie cypher. etheridge had also been long rumored for the starring role in a big-screen janet joplin biopic, but that project never got out of development. (two rival joplin productions are in the works, one starring renée zellweger, the other starring pink.)

while she doesn't know much about acting, etheridge, 43, knows a thing or two about motherhood.

the yes i am singer-songwriter and cypher had two children both carried by cypher and the result of a sperm donation by fellow musician david crosby. they split in 2000 and share custody of their kids.

two years later, etheridge began dating actress tammy lynn michaels. in september 2003, the couple made it official--or as official as it gets since california does not recognize same-sex unions--by getting hitched in a "domestic partnership" ceremony in los angeles. (michaels has a recurring role on showtime's lesbian-themed series, the l word.)

aside from her upcoming tube work, the two-time grammy winner is also set to appear on the big screen.

she will costar with demi moore and sissy spacek as women who get sex-change operations and become guys in the movie southern comfort.

designing women creator linda bloodworth-thomason will make her feature directing debut on the flick, which also features alan cumming and henry thomas--elliot of e.t. fame--as women who used to be guys. the gender-bending film starts shooting in january.

as for her music career, etheridge's latest effot, the concert collection lucky live, dropped on dvd and cd on tuesday.

hey all!

i am so busy with school (i.e. work) that i don't get to email very often.  but, jodie has continued making great progress!  she went outside on monday september 27th for the first time since being hospitalized on june 1st.  she also moved to full liquids shortly after moving to her regular hospital room.  and!! she started eating normal solid foods on monday, too!!!  i never thought i'd see the day she was eating solid food again!!!  i knew it would come, it just seemed like it never would.  she is tolerating the food pretty well.  she still has a lot of nausea, some days more than others, and vomits almost every day.  but, overall, she tolerates her food and medicines pretty well.  she was taken for a ct scan and an ultrasound to see if she has any gall stones remaining in her gall bladder.  it was confirmed that she has none.  she will be having her biliary drainage tube removed today.

and, the biggest and best news of all, she is preparing to be transferred to a rehabilitation medical facility within the next week or two!!  the only thing keeping her from transferring immediately is her pca fentanyl drip.  so, ever since she found out she could be transferred, they have been weaning her off her fentanyl.  they told her that would take two weeks.  we're through the first week of weaning already, so one more week to go.

yesterday, october 1st, marked 4 months that she's been in the hospital.  during her ultrasound of her gall bladder she started to cry.  she had surgery (her 5th) on september 20th to remove fluid from an abcess in her abdomen.  she said the tech was pressing so hard near her most recent incision that it really hurt.  she was also upset though, because of what the date meant.  but, her surgeon was there and told her not to be upset because she was getting better.

her surgeon, though quite respected by the other staff, doesn't have the best bedside manner.  he isn't very personable.  he's not rude.  just pretty stiff.  he doesn't talk much to jodie when he sees her.  he sees her just once a day, and usually it's just a 30 to 45 second conversation asking her if she has vomited, had a bowel movement, and/or felt nauseous.  jodie has been more "adventurous" in her dealings with him lately, asking if she could go outside and when she could switch to solid foods.  both of these inquiries resulted in next-day changes.

she spends most of her days sitting in her chair.  she walks up and down the halls for physical therapy.  she still uses a walker to walk, even from the bed to the bathroom.  however, she sometimes walks down the hall, just holding onto the rail.  i'll try to write again when she moves to the rehab place.  we don't know how long she will be there.  but, i'm hoping for maybe just 3 weeks.  i would love for her to be out of the hospital for halloween.  it is her favorite holiday!

also, her least favorite season, summer, she gladly told me, she missed entirely, having been in the hospital every day.  so, though the illness and hospitalization have been agonizing and endless, at least they coincided nicely with jodie's least favorite season.  if you have to miss one due to illness and hospitalization, it's nice to miss the one you hate the most.  it's easier now to see the bright side of things.  especially, since the brightest thing of all is that she is making it through this and she will be home soon!!! :)

thanks to everyone for their kind words and support.  i hope this email finds you well.

peace, melissa

hey folks,

there's an article called ballads for ballots in the st louis dispatch

the marriage protection amendement was actually the
house version of the federal marriage amendment.  i
don't think that there were too many differences
between the two.  the main difference was that the fma
was in the senate and the mpa was in the house.  :)

sierra leone: lesbian rights activist brutally murdered

(new york, october 5, 2004) - the government of sierra leone should
bring to justice those responsible for the brutal murder of fannyann eddy,
founder of the sierra leone lesbian and gay association and a lesbian
rights activist known across africa, human rights watch said today.

eddy, 30, was found dead on the morning of september 29. while she was
working alone in the sierra leone lesbian and gay association's offices
the previous night, her assailant or assailants apparently broke in to the
premises. she was raped repeatedly, stabbed and her neck was broken.

"fannyann eddy was a person of extraordinary bravery and integrity,
who literally put her life on the line for human rights," said scott long,
director of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights project at
human rights watch. "again and again, within her country's borders and
beyond, she drew attention to the harassment, discrimination and violence
lesbian and gay people face in sierra leone. now, she has been murdered
in the offices of the organization she founded, and there is grave concern
that she herself has become a victim of hatred."

eddy had founded the sierra leone lesbian and gay association in 2002.
the group provided social and psychological support to a fearful and
underground community. eddy herself, however, was a visible and
courageous figure, lobbying government ministers to address the health
and human rights needs of men who have sex with men and women who
have sex with women.

in april, eddy was part of a delegation of sexual-rights activists whom
human rights watch and the international gay and lesbian human
rights commission (iglhrc) helped attend the annual session of the
united nations commission on human rights in geneva. eddy met with
her own government's delegation, and testified to the commission about
lesbian and gay rights in what she called "my beloved sierra leone."

"we face constant harassment and violence from neighbors and others,"
she told the u.n. commission on human rights. "their homophobic
attacks go unpunished by authorities, further encouraging their
discriminatory and violent treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender people."

eddy and her organization documented harassment, beatings and arbitrary
arrests of lesbian, gay and transgender people in sierra leone.

sierra leone is emerging from a devastating 11-year civil war that ended
in 2002. the civil war was characterized by egregious human rights
abuses by all sides but especially by rebel forces, including widespread
rape, murder, torture and limb amputation. despite the disarmament of
some 47,000 combatants and the successful completion of presidential and
parliamentary elections in may 2002, the deep rooted issues that gave rise
to the conflict-endemic corruption, weak rule of law, crushing poverty
and the inequitable distribution of the country's vast natural resources-
remain largely unaddressed by the government.

while there were serious problems with the sierra leone police and
judicial system before the conflict, the civil war clearly exacerbated them.
the international community, particularly the united kingdom, has
invested heavily in efforts to train the police and rehabilitate the judicial
system, however numerous problems remain. while there have been many
improvements in the behavior of the police, reports of extortion, bribe-taking
and unprofessional conduct remain common. there are insufficient numbers of
judges, magistrates, prosecutors and courtrooms, which has led to huge backlogs
within the court system. extended and unlawful detention of hundreds of criminal
suspects-many without due process
guarantees as stipulated in the constitution-is also a key problem.

"the authorities in sierra leone must investigate this crime fairly and
fully," said long. "they must send a message to a frightened lesbian and
gay community that violence against them will not go unpunished."

eddy leaves a 10-year-old son.

fannyann eddy's statement to the u.n. commission on human rights is
available at http://hrw.org/english/docs/2004/10/04/sierra9439.htm.

mime-version: 1.0

hello ladies!

it's time for me to get political again.  i just wanted to let you
know about something that is going on this friday, october 8th, that
i hope many of you will participate in.  on friday, there is a
boycott to show missourians and the country how much we impact the
economy.  please consider contributing in at least some of these
recommended ways.

1) stay home from work. do not generate payroll taxes, income taxes
or add to the economy. if you run a business, let your customers know
by closing for the day.  our own amy doll is closing her business on
friday for this!  amy, do you want to add to this?

2) withdraw $80 from your bank account at an atm.

3) don't shop. do not generate sales tax or business revenue.

4) hang up your cell phone. your silence will affect your whole
communications network.

to go along with the boycott on friday, there is a picnic at tower
grove park from 11 am to 2 pm at the sons of rest pavilion - closest
to grand avenue. the national boycott is calling for lgbt citizens to
call in sick or take a personal day off from their work, but we are
invited to the picnic even if we cannot take off work.  if you must
buy, spend money at lgbt businesses.

more information (a press release) about the boycott is below.

thank you!
lynn

gays to withdraw cash from banks october 8 - could total billions

atlanta, sept. 22, 2004 -- organizers of the boycott for equality are
expanding their nationwide walkout to include a coordinated cash
withdrawal from the economy on october 8.

to demonstrate the need for equality in marriage and the workplace,
straight and gay supporters will each take out $80 from their local
atm.

boycott for equality expects the action will exhaust the cash in many
atms, leaving a reminder of gay economic power to all who try to use
them throughout the long bank weekend.

to further drive home the lessons taught during the boycott,
participants should refer to the boycott when communicating with
their elected representatives, particularly when candidates ask for
money to fund their campaigns.

"let them know you participated in the boycott," explained
duncan. "just take your atm receipt, cross out your account number,
circle your balance, write gay money on it and mail it to campaign
headquarters in the postage paid envelope they provide. they'll get
the message that nobody in america can be taken for granted."

the amount represents the amount the average member of the lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender (lgbt) community contributes to the us
economy each day, and could grow
beyond the $1.4 billion that lgbt workers contribute each day - more
than $500 billion each year according to computations by washington
d.c.-based public relations firm witeck-combs communications.

the walkout combines several actions highlighting the various ways
that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (lgbt) citizens
contribute to the economy on a regular basis.

other components of the boycott include a one-day work stoppage
or "pink flu" day to demonstrate solidarity to employers and
colleagues; a moratorium on spending for goods and services such as
gas, food and clothing, to show retailers what would happen if 7% of
their revenue goes away; closures by sympathetic businesses to make
their customers aware of how dependent americans are upon each other;
and a halt to cell phone use to spread the plea
for equality throughout the participant's network.

close to fifty businesses and 15,000 people have already pledged to
participate using the online forms at the group's web site. some
major groups that have endorsed or encouraged boycott for equality
day include don't amend: the equality campaign, the advocate
magazine, civil marriage us, several local pflag chapters, dc
diversity, equality illinois and wyoming equality.

in at least 36 states it is still legal to fire someone because of
their sexuality - even if they never bring it into the workplace. and
nowhere in the united states are these taxpayers able to file joint
federal income tax, combine tax deductions, or access their partner's
social security or disability benefits.

boycott for equality is an atlanta-based non-profit formed to promote
the boycott, scheduled this year for october 8. for that day, glbt
americans and their straight allies are encouraged to withdraw from
the economy in five specific areas:

1) stay home from work. do not generate payroll taxes, income taxes
or add to the economy. if you run a business, let your customers know
by closing for the day.

2) withdraw $80 from your bank account at an atm.

3) don't shop. do not generate sales tax or business revenue.

4) hang up your cell phone. your silence will affect your whole
communications network.

okay... lou reed and laurie anderson appearing together on a children's
album?  it nearly makes me wish i had kids, just so they could grow up
familiar with those two, and see how they'd turn out!

you know, barb, sometimes you just have to take the risk, right?

gay people in missouri are in the same situation the rest of us gay
folks in the us are.  the email about the missouri boycott was just a
localized example of how folks around this country are participating. =20

this is not just missouri--this is nationwide.  we are protesting the anti-gay legislation that our republican reps seem to want to support as they are riding on dubya's coat tails.

this past election, missouri was the first state to ever pass a bill that actually took rights away from people.  the passed the law to ban gay marriage and also attached to the bill was some other nonsense that, among other things, took away state monies from any employer who includes gay/lesbian/trans in their anti-discrimination policies (it's ok to ban discrimination against anyone because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin).

not only are we not moving forward--there seems to be a push to set us back at least 20 years!  we have to show the powers that be that we are important!  that we do matter to them.  we, as a community need to show our reps that we do have an impact on the community and the economy--and on their possibilities to continue to hold the offices they so cherish.

we need to show them that, in melissa etheridge's words, "we have come too far, and we've got the scars, and we are never going back into the shadows again!!"  (from "giant" on her "lucky" cd).

these are small things that we all can do that don't take any time or money.  i need funds as much as anyone, but i will be withdrawing my $80 and putting it aside for a few days and depositing it again--so no real damage to your bank account!

if anyone can support this protest in any of these ways, i strongly encourage you to do it!

thanks,
toye

countdown of the totally subjective 885 songs of all time, four ig songs have
appeared, according to their countdown list at www.xpn.org:
632, ghost
702, romeo and juliet
731, power of two
879, least complicated
more to come, i'm sure!

deb,
do you mean the 885 top songs of all time? your sentence is a little
unclear. still it is most excellent that the girls have even four songs on
the list. on most stations they wouldn't make an appearance at all.

when my local npr station does it's end of year top album countdown, i fully
expect atwli to be on there.

cheers everyone,

deb,

i'm so glad you shared this with us!  i've been listening all morning and
really enjoying the selection that they are playing.  "alice's restaurant"
is on right now and i haven't heard that in years!  some other great songs
they have recently played:

295 all along the watchtower by bob dylan
296 diamonds and rust by joan baez
297 i wanna be sedated by ramones
298 unchained melody by righteous brothers
299 youve got a friend by carole king

talk about variety!  it's a lot of fun.  i'm hoping that another ig song
makes it on.
:)

and i always confuse her with patti larkin, i dunno why...

also - the weekend i got married me and my hubby were getting ready for our
reception - and i got to hear the ig on world cafe...it was wonderful....

sometimes you just have to take the risk, eh?

"four songs and counting" refers to that fact that at the time of the
original post, wxpn had already played 4 ig songs as part of their
countdown.

hey there,
to make this kind of ig related, i was talking to peter cash about amy =

she was "really nice".

so this friday night, in hamilton the cash brothers and skydiggers are =
playing a gig together at the casbah (at la luna) at 306 king st. w.  =
then in toronto next friday 10/15 at the rivoli, a more acoustic show, =
and saturday 10/16 at the horseshoe a more "uptempo" show.  info about =
tickets is on skydiggers.com.  if you go, tell peter that jen sent you.  =

for those who don't know of the cash brothers/skydiggers, peter cash =
used to be with the skydiggers.  the cash brothers and a very unique =

are kind of country rock.  they've been around for years.

well, then you'll probably like wxpn!  it's a public radio station that has a
great music format.  if you're in the philly area, tune into 88.5fm.  if you're
not in the philly area, then listen to it live online at:

just as an explanation for all those who live outside wxpn's listening area
and don't partake in tuning in on their live stream on the internet.

wxpn originates at the university of pennsylvania in phila, pa. it is
publicly supported by listeners who purchase memberships.  the show "world
cafe" was created by this station. after suffering for years in tiny cramped
quarters, the radio station just moved into brand new digs.

to celebrate the station decided to play back the top 885 songs of all time
as decided by its listeners. everyone was to mail/email in their top ten
songs and the station complied the list from all the partcipants top ten
list. i could never narrow down my top songs to just ten but it has been a
great week listening to the count down.

the station celebrates its "musical diversity" and this countdown sure
highlights that.
only one day left .....tune in!

they just finished playing "terrapin station!"
