to think...it used to be so easy to email ig....phhh (sigh).
could someone please help me out? i'd really appreciate it.

thanks!

yup. it's that time of year again......for you newbies...each year we have this thing where you email a person in charge....and they in turn give you a list of other listees interested in giving and receiving holiday greeting cards.....is there anyone who would like to take charge this year? i would like to if nobody will....but i joined an acting troupe this year and my schedule is going to be hectic....so since i did it the last two years in a row, i think it's someone else's turn....but if no one will do it?  i will take it on again.

what say you all?

hi all,

it was a rerun of the "women rock" episode.  i came across the show sunday
morning when i was flipping through the channels at my parents' place.  any
time is a good time to hear amy and emily play.  especially relaxing in
p.j.'s, sipping warm apple cider, and leafing through the paper.

i will be happy to take a turn at coordinating the x-mas list.  if you wish
to be part of the christmas card list, send your snail addy to me between
now and december 11th. i will send out the lists to the participants on
december 12th and that should give everyone sufficient time to prepare and
mail their cards out.  my email addy is:

mbruno@cslanet.calstatela.edu

have fun with your acting troupe barb.

hey, everyone,
whatever your sentiments behind the historical ramifications of the
first thanksgiving, please remember the message behind the t-word. i spent about
an hour monday helping to feed homeless people on the streets of
philadelphia. a true life-changing experience that i surely will repeat. it was
heart-wrenching to see people so grateful for merely one new pair of socks. we here have
much to be thankful for; let's not forget it.

you fed them socks? i hope they were clean at least.

just kidding. yeah, let's hope all americans celebrate thanksgiving by
doing something, anything, to try to improve our country. nothing lifts
lingering election depression like positive action!

quirky - sorta like the butchies with a huge b-52's influence and minus the

joe's bar is a good place to see a show too...

argh - i won't have the $$ to go to nyc before next year. but i will

this was in the independent online (uk newspsper) yesterday ....

killers of gay student deny attack was homophobic
by robert black
26 november 2004

the killers of the gay american student matthew shepard in 1998 have said in
a tv interview that they were motivated not by homophobia, but the prospect
of robbery to fuel a methamphetamine binge.

"he was pretty well-dressed, had a wallet full of money," aaron mckinney
said of meeting shepard, 21, at a bar in laramie, wyoming. "all i wanted to
do was beat him up and rob him. ... seemed like a good idea at the time."

the robbery got out of hand, said mckinney and his accomplice, russell
henderson, and shepard was beaten into a coma while tied to a fence outside
the small college town. he died five days later.

the crime was condemned by president bill clinton, congress and the
international community, and spurred debate on the effectiveness of hate
crime laws. mckinney and henderson, both 27, are serving life sentences for
murder.

mckinney said he killed shepard because of the effects of drugs, not because
shepard was gay. henderson agreed, saying "it's not because me and aaron had
anything against gays or any of that."

mckinney said shepard asked for a lift home as he was drunk. he said that in
the truck shepard asked for sex in return for drugs, but mckinney decided to
rob shepard instead. he struck him, and although shepard handed over his
wallet, the beating went on. "sometimes when you have that rage going
through you, there's no stopping it," mckinney said

please.   does it make the killers feel better to tell
the world that this was not a hate crime?  apparently
so.  i would not watch those sleazy bastards in the
interview.  are they facing the death penalty if they
admit to this being a hate crime?   was judy shephard
also interviewed?  how did she react to this?  does
she buy that her son was not the victim of a hate
crime?  does anyone really believe them when they say
this was just a robbery fueled by rage that got out of
hand? (my words)  lock them up and throw away the key
and let them think of what they did day after day.
let it eat them up.  let them be tortured by the
knowledge they killed an innocent person.  they'll
pay.  they'll live their own private hell.

20/20 response

statement from judy and dennis shepard concerning 20/20 upcoming report on the murder of matthew shepard

on november 26, 2004, 20/20 will air a piece that promised 'new information and facts' about matt's beating and subsequent death. dennis and i reviewed an advance copy of the show and were dismayed and saddened by the tabloid nature of the show, its lack of serious reporting of facts in evidence, and the amateurish nature of asking leading questions to the people who were interviewed.

i, too, was asked by 20/20 for an interview and agreed to do so to ensure that all of the facts were correctly stated.  my only stipulation was that our legal advisor sean maloney, matthew shepard foundation board member and former senior white house staffer, had to be included in the interview to share his legal knowledge and expertise regarding matthew's murder.  he was quite eloquent in stating the facts pertaining to matt's case, his knowledge of hate crimes in general, and in debunking 20/20's attempt to rewrite history.  as you may or may not know, sean was deleted from the interview entirely.  the editing by 20/20 of my interview seems to leave out all of my relevant comments regarding the potential bias of the show and my deliberate restating of the facts of the case clearly ended up on the cutting room floor. my remarks were reduced to a few very personal maternal comments taken out of context to make it appear as if i agreed with 20/20's  theories. that couldn't be
farther from the truth.

this same subjective editing occurred with dave o'malley's interview.  dave, a captain with the city of laramie police force at the time, was laramie's lead investigator in the case and worked in tandem with rob debree, the lead investigator for the albany county sheriff's department, to bring the case to trial and to provide the evidence necessary to convict both russell henderson and aaron mckinney. (both law enforcement officers are in complete agreement with the facts as stated during the trials.)

dave gave ms. vargas a detailed account of the case.  he described the elements of hate and gay bias that were found during the extensive investigation and were substantiated in the large body of evidence collected for this case.  dave's comments were severely edited.  perhaps they were left out because he did not give ms. vargas the answer(s) she needed to maintain her 'new' theory concerning the murder.  one of the most glaring omissions in the piece was the transcript of aaron mckinney's in-custody interview which took place a few days after the murder.  this occurred before any 'line of defense' had been established by legal counsel for the two defendants.  had that document been included, it would have shown an un-rehearsed and unemotional anti-gay account of the events before, during, and after leaving matt tied to the fence.

despite their promotional efforts to the contrary, 20/20 has not presented a 'new' theory.  much of this information was included in a harpers magazine cover story in 1999.  what is new is the unfortunate downslide of a reputable news magazine show when its highly respected host retires.
20/20 has sacrificed years of professional journalistic ethics and values for a stab at revisionist history ... and ratings.

i watched it, and the reporting was horrible.  at one point they tried to say that one of the boys (i don't remember which) was a closeted bisexual, and therefore he can't be homophobic...
