painting the town indigo
indigo girl emily saliers speaks out about gay marriage,
love and duos latest works
by lawrence ferber
friday, march 26, 2004

atlantas own indigo girls, amy ray and emily saliers, are all over the
local and national music scene. the venerable pairs latest album, all that
we let in, hit store shelves last month, and their collaboration with the
atlanta ballet, shed your skin/the indigo girls project, appears at the
fox theatre this weekend.
the ballet is a restaging of a unique project that combines the duos
live performance with dance numbers by atlanta ballet company members.

just as when childhood friends saliers and ray laid down their first tracks
in 1981 as the b-band and later as indigo girls, the pair is   not afraid
to publicly discuss their own sexual orientations as well as the   politics
of gender and gay issues.

but while the duo is speaking out more and more on issues such as same-sex
marriage rights, they have no plans to become wedding singers, saliers
  says.

oh my god, that would be depressing, she muses. no you   light up
my life. no way.

besides, the pair is too busy touring with the new album.

last audiences heard from the indigos was 2002s become you, which
united many of the same talents as the new all that. producer   peter
collins as well as musicians carol isaacs, clare kenny and brady blade
came back together at georgias sound tree studios for the new project.

all that is a lively, energized album filled with indigo aural   hallmarks
like rich dueling guitars, soulful keyboards and the saliers-ray   trademark
harmonies. the cd is a bridge between the acoustic folk of become   you
and the alt-rock tinged come on now social released   in 2000.

come on was so layered, has so much stuff on it, saliers   says. such
a fun album to me, it might be my favorite. this ones   more organic to
me across the board, although theres electric guitar   on it.

and dont worry, birkenstock set. there are acoustic ballads in the
mix, too.

ray wrote five of the albums 11 tracks; saliers wrote the remaining
six.

a lot of [our songs] themes crossed over, saliers says. politics
and social causes are going to emerge, which they did, so we have some thematic
similarities. we also have some straight-up love songs.

but one major element does bond the album together: legendary comic book
illustrator   jaime hernandez (whose love & rockets comic series features
queer characters) illustrates the cd cover and interior booklet.

saliers describes the odd hernandez-drawn storyline in the booklet, which
involves a woman who plants statues from outer space in the desert, as
a   metaphor for the beautiful miracles the universe can provide.

the cover art is this woman on a pipe, but to me, it is a balance between
nature and the destruction of nature, she says.

as for the songs, rays love for reggae, ska and the clash inspired
the bouncy heartache for everyone.

from a seemingly different realm comes the albums gentle title song,
which saliers says is personal but also universal.

it talks about the details of life meeting, about planets falling and
exploding. its an anti-war song, she asserts. in the end,   theres
the beauty and terror of life, they work hand in hand it   can be painful
at times.

saliers personally boasts a healthy 10-year relationship with her girlfriend.
so how does the singer-songwriter keep coming up with yarns of unhappy,
dysfunctional   affairs for her albums?

as a writer, your eyes and ears are open all the time, you observe
people and other relationships. you have empathy, she explains. i   think
a lot about what it would be like to be in certain situations. i watch
a lot of films and read a lot of literature, so i pick up a lot of dysfunction.

conversely, free in you expresses saliers own love for   her partner.

[she is] a really wonderful person, i like her personality, salier
says. shes always interesting to me. i found the right person,   and im
very fortunate. but we work at it.

saliers says she and ray also work on their longtime friendship and professional
collaboration. indigo girls seeds were first sowed as students at laurel
ridge elementary school in decatur. later, they formed the b-band, experimentally
recording some tunes in 1981. after that, saliers and ray made   a go
until indigo girls officially came to be in 1985.

their eponymous major label debut was released in 1989. over the course
of   nine albums, the indigos were nominated for six grammys, won one and
took home   multiple gay music awards. the pair sold one double platinum
disc, three records   went platinum and four more went gold.

as the leading act from decaturs lesbians with acoustic guitars movement
in the 80s, the pair finally went electric on 2000s come   on now social.
the disc was recorded in london with guest artists including   joan osborne,
sheryl crow, meshell ndegeocello and kate schellenbach   of luscious jackson.

i also wouldnt mind singing with mary j. blige, saliers   says. she
can sing the whole track, actually ill sing   backup.

when not working with saliers, ray runs the atlanta-based record label
daemon   records with a focus on local acts. the label also released rays
2001   solo effort, stag. a second solo album may follow.

saliers is considering a debut solo effort as well. but first, an album
of   indigo rarities is scheduled for release following the duos current
  tour.

the bands sound has evolved over the years, but one aspect of their
work that remains consistent is indigo girls commitment to political
activism.

lately, activism includes fighting amendments to both state and federal
constitutions   that would disallow same-sex marriage or partnership benefits.

bush would be the first president of the u.s. to amend the constitution
in a way that is exclusive rather than inclusive, saliers says. he
needs to stop. what a legacy hes dug already.

indigo girls web site, www.indigogirls.com, includes information about   the
fight for same-sex marriage, and saliers recently attended a rally in georgia
against the states proposed marriage amendment.

there were all sorts of clergy against the amendment, in support of
the gay, lesbian, bisexual [and] transgender community, she says. its
very uplifting to see that there are other sides and that the christian
right   doesnt speak for all people of faith.

saliers urges every known gay person in the public eye to take a stand
and   fight for same-sex marriage rights.

id like all fellow gay and gay-supportive public figures and   celebrities
to speak up against the antigay amendments, she says. its   just so important
that people realize we need to have our civil rights and   we have to fight
this religious right thats dictating morality and mixing   with politics.

whether saliers plans to get hitched herself is a more personal, private
issue,   she insists.

if my partner and i want to, we will. and if not we wont, she   says.
i wouldnt get married just to celebrate having won the   right. im fighting
for a civil right for all who want get married, but   not everybody does
and i respect that as well. i will stay in this fight until   the end if
my life depends on it.
