subject: [ig-news] charlottesville show - monday

[sherlyn's note: this is an excerpt of a message which was originally

what a weird show.  if you were there, you know
exactly what i'm saying.  they played in a
high-school auditorium.  maybe 1000 seats?  300
seats were reserved by 'patrons' and 'sponsors'
of the charlottesville free clinic - for which
this show was a benefit concert.  this
essentially filled the first 7 rows or so with
people who were in most cases, not fans.  lots of
straight, older couples.  people danced for no
songs.  people stood for no songs.  not even ctf.
no singing along on po2.  it was crazy.

shawn mullins was the opener.  he was really
great.  i like his other songs so much better
than the one they played on the radio.  [...]

it was so quiet between songs, that the girls
kept asking, "y'all okay out there?" - which
admittedly, made them chattier than usual,
because it was like they had to fill the silence.
my favorite between song banter was when they
were saying that they had played a frat party in
charlottesville once, which was like a rite of
passage (no relation to album of the same name),
and then they were telling about playing some
sort of 'menses' ritual thing at a georgia tech
frat, and how weird that was, and when they got
there, they realized they were playing because it
was a ritual that focused on women, which had led
them to select ig.  anyhow - it was pretty funny,
and then in the midst of laughter, emily said,
"we could've been a frat band", and amy, "think
how different the world would be, " and emily,
"frats are people too."

amy talked about coyotes around her house in ga,
but said they were across the river, so it was
okay, but maybe not so okay for the chicken farm
that was also across the river.  emily commented
a lot about the dc march and about protecting a
woman's right to choose and how important the
upcoming election was, and how it was so great to
be there with all generations of women, lots o'
lesbians and lots of kids, and yadda yadda yadda
- - dead silence from the first 7 rows and lots of
cheers from the back section of the crowd...

interesting moment - in shame on you, amy sang
her big coming-out line differently.  "beautiful
ladies walk right by you know you never know what
to say."  now - i really took offense at the
changing of the wording, and the less than
enthusiastic emphasis that it was given compared
to every other time i've heard her sing it, which
is a lot.  it seemed to me, that it was a
knee-jerk reaction to the different crowd that
was there, and not wanting to freak them out by
singing an obvious i'm a lesbian line.  my
partner thinks i'm reading too much into it.  [...]

shawn mullins came out and did the stipe part in
kid fears and it really made the song.  i usually
cringe when they play this [...] but shawn was great at
the part and the three part harmony especially at
the very end was absolutely blow-me-away
fantastic.

other ramblings.  they said that they didn't
really remember the last time they were in
charlottesville, and someone screamed out "'92!"
- - which is maybe also why the crowd wasn't the
usual crowd.  [...]

all said, the girls put on a fantastic show as
usual under very difficult circumstances.  [...]

rock on...
