"illiteracy is a huge
issue," says peacock, who mentored students at oscar mayer elementary school
in her lincoln park neighborhood. "one out of three chicagoans is functionally
illiterate," she said, referring to a national endowment for the arts study
released in july. "the people i've looked to as my activist role models are
all a generation or two older than me. we could use more [activism] in our
present time. and we can start with ourselves."

to that end, peacock
and kristen hall and emily saliers of the indigo girls wrote the acoustic
political anthem "i'll start with me," which appears on the 2002 release "alice
peacock." "we started planning this concert in january," peacock said. "i
see this becoming an annual thing, like farm aid. maybe this becomes a tour
at some point. but everyone has been incredible, volunteering their time."
