indigo girls coming to sioux city
by jesse claeys journal staff writer
amy ray had a tune dancing through her head when it came time to
record the latest studio release from the indigo girls.
not that it was anything new for the singer/songwriter. the problem
this time was ray had never really played lead guitar while recording
with emily saliers, the other half of the folk/rock duo.
"i'm pretty bad but i heard something and wanted to play it. i
struggled with it and did it," ray said during a telephone interview.
a women who has won half a grammy, released around 10 albums and is
adored by countless fans considers herself a bad guitar player? in
order to understand that you have to consider who she thinks great
guitar players are.
"i'm just simple, i guess. i mean, i listen to the allman brothers.
those guys, duane allman, he was the s---. you know, guys like jimi
hendrix, i listen to these guitar players and think, 'oh my god.' when
i listen to all that i realize i'm pretty simple but i'm playing what
is in my heart and that's what's important," ray said.
and playing what is in their hearts may be the key to the lasting
success of the indigo girls. not ones to rely on others' works, ray
and saliers pen their own tunes, with ray bringing a punk rock state
of mind to the softer, more classically influenced saliers.
the ying and yang found between the two indigo girls first grabbed
national attention when epic records released "indigo girls" in 1989.
on the strength of the single "closer to fine" the album hit the
charts and eventually earned a grammy that year for best folk
recording.
a string of gold and platinum records followed, placing ray and
saliers among classic duos like simon and garfunkel, for example. what
musical direction does an acoustic duo take after continued success?
the same one, but now there is some pressure involved.
ray said she tosses and turns over everything from styles of
arrangements to guitar leads, trying to never repeat herself while
writing songs, all the while attempting to stay in touch with the
sound the two women have developed over the years.
"it is important to me and important to challenge yourself, but at the
same time i don't ever think we should be different just for the sake
of being different. we pretty much want to do what is going to be the
best for the song," ray said.
for their latest album, "all that we let in," the indigo girls stuck
with the same team gathered for 2002's "become you." they used the
same studio, producer, studio musicians, etc. this time the gathered
musicians produced an album with rock tracks, rather than just
acoustic ones.
there are times when ray's love of the harder music in life produces
some tunes she deems not to be indigo girls friendly. she uses those
for solo projects like her second solo album that is expected to be
released in early april.
another project also in the works is an album of rarities, a kind of
bootleg disc, according to ray. that will have to wait the 15-stop
fall tour is over, one that will bring the indigo girls to the orpheum
theatre on wednesday, oct. 20.
"we are basically listening to all of the tapes we have lying around
from the last 15 or so years, just trying to sort out what we want to
put on it," the georgia-native said.
ray has learned one thing from listening to years and years of indigo
girls music, it's hard.
"it is kinda humbling and humiliating to listen to old stuff. there's
a reason why we haven't released some of these songs."
but after all, that's coming from a women who considers herself a bad
guitar player.
