i read sections of this book, and parts of it are quite good - definitely
introduced me to more great artists and told me one or two things about the
girls i didn't already know.

it's published by the university press of kentucky - yay for university

it doesn't seem so weird. anyway, lots of calendars come pre-printed with
celebrity birthdays. like the simpsons one, for example. according to
which it's jd salinger's birthday, and also b. kliban's.
and barb, i was the exact same way about pp&m, only it was late 80s, early
90s for me. i still have a scrapbook that has a letter from each of the
three. they were very good about writing back. did you hear mary's sick,
by the way? :( there's an address to send get-well cards on

hi all. i hope everyone had a good new year.
i was wondering what the exact taping policy at indigo girls' shows is. i
added them to the list of bands that allow taping on the wikipedia site, but
after doing that i realized i wasn't 100% sure they allowed taping. can
anyone clarify for me? thanks in advance.

indigo girls official taping policy
audience taping is permitted at all indigo girls shows. we believe
that taping shows is helpful in the encouragement of fan interaction
and a way of having a permanent memory of a live show. if indigo girls
are playing in an event which features multiple bands, the taping
policy of the headlining band and/or the festival event will dictate
the taping policy for that evening. all taping of live indigo girls
shows is restricted to audio only; no video taping will be allowed.
audio recording is limited to portable equipment which includes
microphones and a recorder. power or other auxiliary equipment are
generally not supplied, so be prepared to bring your own battery
powered equipment. soundboard feeds will not be allowed. if you wish
to tape, we encourage you to arrive early to set up.
all taping must be for personal and non-commercial use only. no profit
is ever to be made from live shows. you are permitted to trade shows
with other fans for an equal amount of media (ie. 2 cds for 2 cds).
indigo girls, inc. reserves the right to seek legal remedies against
anyone that is in violation of this policy.
trading of shows has been a large part of recreating the live
experience and we want to continue offering this option to fans.
please keep clear of the crew during the show. remember that the
audience's enjoyment of a live show is paramount and will never be
sacrificed to accommodate tapers. please refrain at all times from
requesting fans to move or keep quiet. please respect other fans while
you are taping.
thank you -

i think its more a case of an implied "no." while i
havent ever seen a band specifically bar tapers at
shows, i think its generally assumed that youre not
allowed to tape shows unless you have explicit
permission. i always assume its something i have to
"hide" unless im at an ig show (or girlyman, who also
allows taping) - even if its an artist i dont think
would mind, like dar williams.

many years ago i asked about dar williams live recordings, and i was told that
dar is adamantly opposed to being recorded. apparently she is quite a
perfectionist and doesn't want any recordings to exist unless she has control
over their content. this may have changed since 1997-ish, though.

i'm pretty certain that a lot of bands specifically disallow taping. i
know metallica is completely opposed to it. there seems to be a
definite split in the thinking -- some of the bands see taping as
somehow ripping the band off, as distributing the shows (even through
trading) is free dissemination of their work. others see live
performances as an organic, one-time-only event (even if the same
setlist is performed every night), and thus taping one show is only
recording an event and not taking anything from the band, per se.
furthurnet is an excellent resource for people interested in taping,
and they only allow trading of shows by bands who have officially
stated that they support tapers. happily, ig is on the list. pearl
jam allows taping, even though they sell official copies of every show
of every tour, or at least the past couple of tours. i've heard there
are even some bands who are considering including an official bootleg
of the show attended with each ticket. kinda like prince giving
everyone attending his musicology tour a copy of his newest cd.

dar has given explict permission in the past - even allowing photos without
flash in the past...but sometimes, the best moments (like the encore at
bates college in 99, with maybe 110 people) are best enjoyed in the moment
- even if the tape runs out....
dunno how she is now - but she is amazing live...

the snowden environmental trust is a non-profit foundation set up by dar
williams to donate money to worthwhile environmental organizations, in
particular, those which are working to preserve land and help wildlife
habitat. dar has suggested that $10 be sent to the fund when you trade
bootlegs of her performances.

for a number of years i've thought that would be a good idea. even if you
had to pay a small fee ($10 or so) for the concert you just attended. that
would rock! i think it would build a great connection between fans and
artists. if i was in a band, i'd do it.
we need to convince the girls (and tori) to do this. it would've been just
the coolest thing to walk out of the buffalo 2001 show with a copy of it in
hand (amy and emily were really talkative that night and the set list was
awesome!) or the ithaca '98 tori show (best. show. ever.). it would make
paying the exorbitant ticket fees more palatable.
speaking of fees, isn't it neat that you can now buy concert tickets
directly from the ig site? i hope other artists follow suit. f*%$
ticketbastard!
cheers,

yes, in fact, i've already had this experience - went to see arrested
development (the rap group responsible for tennessee, the song from jeez,
15 yrs ago) and i had my booting gear, there was an "instant live" boot
available for 15 dollars right after the show. the mix wasn't perfect, but
far superior than a audience and none of the hassle of mastering a
recording to cd....
so the technology exists....phish, the dead and pearl jam have their shows
downloable usually 48 hrs after a gig. tho i have heard it takes quite the
$$, staff and committment to do it.

i don't know dar's policy, because i don't tape. however, my
supposition is that she now plays in a lot of venues that do not allow taping. they
probably just issue broad, one-size-fits-all restrictions. www.darwilliams.net is
a fan-run, dar-supported web site that includes info about the darlist and
also all kind of dar links.
and, yes, clear channel often runs venues that forbid taping (though
not necessarily where dar plays). and i think they are wrong for doing this.
however, i won't give a blanket dismissal of clear channel, because
without them, a historic art-deco movie house in philadelphia would be facing
the wrecking ball. the city and state did not want to spend the bucks to save
the boyd theatre (also known as the sameric, built in 1928). they would rather
direct their cash toward stadiums housing multimillion-dollar sports
corporations and legalized gambling facilities, and only clear channel came forward with
money to save the theater.

the rumor in u2-land is that an audience member can take their ipod (tm, all
rights reserved) to the show, hand it to a staffer, and pick it up after the
show fully loaded. yes, ipods only, probably in apple's special mp4 format.
this is all rumor based on the apple-u2 partnership and comments to the
press.
i like what pearl jam does better where you see a show, finally get out of
the parking lot, drive home, log onto their server, and the show you just
heard is ready in unmixed form to be downloaded. two weeks later, a
mastered cd arrives with unique packaging.
see ya,
michael.

all true. some bands do have them ready on-the-fly, but other bands just offer them on their website. the who have recently made the majority of their concerts available for purchase on their website, with all proceeds going to charity. (then again, they're rich as hell...)
barenaked ladies offer you the chance to buy a "download coupon" at the merchandise table - then you log onto the website, enter the coupon code, and there's your recording - in either cd form, mp3 or flac....this is the way to go.
even better, some bands (like bnl and guster) have some of their shows available on itunes. this is the absolute best deal going imho - you're not getting uncompressed files, true, but they're soundboard and excellent-sounding, and more importantly, you can download individual files if you choose. i don't need 50 live versions of "galileo" (even though, um, i have at least 50 anyway), but it'd be great to get a rarity or two when they're played, and just pay $.99 for the privilege.
this is definitely the wave of the future. either way, even if the bands don't make them available for purchase, i just don't understand the logic of not allowing tapers. all it does is increase fandom. i could have sworn that both patty griffin and nickel creek are okay with taping, just not internet trading...but i could be wrong.

oh god, if this is true than it will be the atomic itunes tour...
not a bad thing, but diehards really shouldn't have to pay $150 for 447
downloaded songs, to get maybe 12 songs that were not available anywhere.
u2 released the concert in brooklyn (amazing gig - got the dvd from a
filmer in the crowd, and the free concert, imho, was nothing short of pure
brillance, yet what mtv showed, and what itunes released is seriously
lacking. i mean they did the most intense version of miracle drug)
no comment on how many u2 shows i want to see this tour..
tho it is a cool concept, but i dont like the ipod interface...

actually, if they follow the pearl jam model, they'll give you a url
where you can download the show about 24-48 hours the concert, and then
they'd snail mail you the physical cd about 2 weeks after the show.
(pearl jam hasn't been doing it exactly this way, but other bands have
been.)
there are actually some outfits which have cds of the actual show about
45 minutes after it's finished, i guess the idea being you'd hang out
in the parking lot or something (traffic sucks after a concert,
anyway), and then grab the physical disc and be on your way. it's
probably got zero mastering applied to it, which is where i like the pj
idea better -- they don't do much to it, but they at least rebalance
the sound and add some audience noise at the appropriate moments.

btw-i'm kinda' a newbie. been a longtime ig fan. haven't been to as many shows as i'd like to have been, but i hope to catch them next time they come 'round.

haven't posted here in ages but wanted to throw my .02 in. as for
discs of a concert being available after the concert. the allman
brothers are doing this through instant live. its actually a
great service. the cds for 2003 were so so, but from the 2004
concerts they are great. i'd love to see more artists doing this.
its great listening to the show you just saw on the way home.
and for $25 and waiting a half hour (if you have to use the
restroom after the show, you've just killed half the time.

lorna,
it was my understanding that tori allows taping but only if you use them for
personal use or trading (i could be wrong though; i'll check on the tori
list). tori is totally against internet file sharing of commercially
released stuff. this is the major reason why she has added bonus dvds and
other cool content to her cd releases: to encourage you to buy the cd
instead of file-sharing it.
i think the girls were doing a similar thing by including the dvd with
atwli.
cheers,
tom m.

that the new station dave fm (92.9) regularly plays
ig. kid fears is playing as i type this and i have
heard galileo and closer to fine often in the past.
the rest of the music they play is pretty freaking
cool as well.
