as i was listening to ig in the car the other day, i was thinking
about their countermelodies and how they're really such an important
part of the ig song sound and structure.

anybody have any favorite/least favorite countermelodies?

i don't know if it's my absolute favorite but i really love amy's "i
remember you when we were shiny and new..." countermelody (or is
emily's "we act empty and innocent" the countermelody?) from reunion.

i actually started thinking about it because i was listening to
something real and amy's "now that we're done with that/and in the end
that's all i get" countermelody during the last chorus, and i was
thinking that this is probably my least favorite countermelody of
theirs.

thoughts?

i think my favorite is in love will come to you in the second verse ("i'm always
closing my eyes...").  it sends chills up my spine everytime!

i think the counter melodies in kid fears are so wonderful, especially with having a male voice thrown in.....i also love how they build up
for the the third part.....it's all so flowing and melodic! that appeals
to the choir lover in me...that's me favorite for amy.....my least favorite counter melody in an amy song.....i can't think of any right now but it is there...

favorite counter melody in an emily song is watershed, and least favorite....because it's so covered up....is cold beer and remote control....thank god for my cbrc promo cd and live at the fillmore!!!
if there's anything i absolutely can't stand.....is when they record
something only to cover it up.....it just doesn't make sense.....like
for example take the meridel leseur quote in go......if they were gonna
make the words hard to hear (thus making them hard to understand) why oh
why even put them down to begin with? that is why i couldn't enjoy go until i heard the song live six months after i bought it.did amy ever
say anything about why she did that?

prince of darkness is my favorite ig song, so it stands to reason that this
is my favorite countermelody:

my place is of the sun and this place is of the dark
(by grace, my sight grows stronger)
and i do not feel the romance i will not be
(and i will not be a pawn for the prince of darkness any longer)

another favorite is world falls:

i'm running
(this world falls on me)
to the end of the earth
(with hopes of immortality)
i'm swimming
(everywhere i turn)
to the edge of the sea
(the beauty keeps on shaking me)
and i'm laughing
(this world falls on me)
cause i'm under a starry sky
(hopes of immortality)
this world was meant for me
(everywhere i turn)
i've got hopes of immortality

i'm also fond of the "handed down and made by hand" countermelody from
mystery.

i was going to mention that one too, but i figured three was enough lol.
that's my best friend's favorite ig song.

you swear you can't swim the river
(i've become the beggar now)
(you've become the saint somehow)
but i saw you running to jump in
(i've become the beggar now)
(you've become the saint somehow)
i swore i'd never be your sinner
(i've become the beggar now)
(you've become the saint somehow)
til i held your sin
hand me downs

the countermelody part is actually my favorite part of the song. i love the
intense way she punctuates "you've become the saint somehow".
