michigan preparing to let doctors refuse to treat gays=20
(lansing, michigan) doctors or other health care providers could not be =
disciplined or sued if they refuse to treat gay patients under =
legislation passed wednesday by the michigan house.=20
the bill allows health care workers to refuse service to anyone on =
moral, ethical or religious grounds.=20
the republican dominated house passed the measure as dozens of catholics =
looked on from the gallery. the michigan catholic conference, which =
pushed for the bills, hosted a legislative day for catholics on =
wednesday at the state capitol.=20
the bills now go the senate, which also is controlled by republicans.=20
the conscientious objector policy act would allow health care providers =
to assert their objection within 24 hours of when they receive notice of =
a patient or procedure with which they don't agree. however, it would =
prohibit emergency treatment to be refused.=20
three other three bills that could affect lgbt health care were also =
passed by the house wednesday which would exempt a health insurer or =
health facility from providing or covering a health care procedure that =
violated ethical, moral or religious principles reflected in their =
bylaws or mission statement.=20
opponents of the bills said they're worried they would allow providers =
to refuse service for any reason. for example, they said an emergency =
medical technicians could refuse to answer a call from the residence of =
gay couple because they don't approve of homosexuality.=20
rep. chris kolb (d-ann arbor) the first openly gay legislator in =
michigan, pointed out that while the legislation prohibits racial =
discrimination by health care providers, it doesn't ban discrimination =
based on a person's sexual orientation.=20
"are you telling me that a health care provider can deny me medical =
treatment because of my sexual orientation? i hope not," he said.=20
"i think it's a terrible slippery slope upon which we embark," said rep. =
jack minore (d-flint) before voting against the bill.=20
paul a. long, vice president for public policy for the michigan catholic =
conference, said the bills promote the constitutional right to religious =
freedom.=20
"individual and institutional health care providers can and should =
maintain their mission and their services without compromising =
faith-based teaching," he said in a written statement.

you cant deny services based on familial status - any organixation
receiving federal funding has to abide by this - it is also a work around
(and actually, probably more legally, sound than passing a g/l/b/t rights
bill...)
you can also use gender bias to lodge a complaint...
civil rights legislation is a necessary thing, but realize, it doesnt
always protect people - you cannot legislate attitudes - a disabled woman
is dying in florida because she may have said she did not want a tube
twenty years ago

there isn't enough discrimination that folks think of on their own...now we have legislators passing bills into law actually encouraging others to discriminate!!! this is outrageous! are we still living in america? hold on, let me check the calendar...what year is this? 1955?

hi,
various sources on the net actually date that news back to april 2004.
so they've been "preparing" for a while now.
i guess it never made it through the michigan senate?
if someone has the time to research this more closely, maybe this
would be a good starting point:

from what i understand, yes. the impetus for it is for doctors to choose not
to give abortions, against their conscience, which i support. doctors should
not have to go against their conscience in this matter. but some people
extrapolate it to mean doctors could refuse to treat lgbt, which is abhorrent. i'm
sure it will be challenged in court -- if it even passes the senate and
governor.

mike,
what is the clinical/medical definition of "disabled"?
do you really believe that she can be medically
termed "a disabled woman"? she was in a persistant
vegetative state - her cortex was destroyed, for
crying out loud. facts are facts . . .
i don't want to get into a debate about this, and
believe me, i don't want this to become an item for
discussion - this is not the place . . . but really, i
can't believe you are calling her "disabled". call it
what it is, regardless of your beliefs.

hi, all.
with all the negativity going on around us of late, thought i'd send a positive note. i was reading the april 2005 edition of cosmo, a mag which i do not read often. it is so geared to straight society that there isn't much that interests me in it.
there is an article called, "i was raised by two moms," and it is told from the perspective of taylor heald, the daughter of two lesbians. taylor is 20 years old. she talks about what it was like in school dealing with alternative family stuff. this is a very positive article in a very "straight" magazine. it is worth a read. the blurb above the article says, "to many, gay parenting is a hot-button political issue. to 20-year old taylor, it's normal everyday life."
this young woman does speaking engagements on gay rights, and is as proud as she can be of her two moms. it's a great advocate to the gay marriage issue.
if you are bored in a doctor's office or other waiting area, check out the cosmo for april!!

saw the girls at the pageant in st. louis the other night. as usual, a great show. i did not care for the opening act, magnapop, but the girls were great.
amy looked awesome as usual, smiling in amazement at everyone singing along. emily was gorgeous. she was wearing a black "ac dc back in black" concert t.
emily's voice was in top form. she sang so high and clear. she was excellent.
i don't know the entire set list, but here are some of the songs...
least complicated
let it be me (by request) emily dedicated it to george w. and stuck up her middle finger and gestured profoundly several times to the audience. in the verse that says, "...and the president has no idea who the masses are," she changed it to "...george bush, you have no idea who the masses are." then she sang in a very loud voice, almost angrily, "i'm one of them!"
it's alright
chickenman...bitterroot...chickenman (great guitar work by es)
new emily song (es alone on the piano)
new amy song (ar sings alone with guitar)

i give up...that's all i can remember!
show was great! girls were wonderful! the pageant has a lot of background noise because of the "bar situation" in the back. during some of the quiet songs, i could hear the crowd over the girls and i was only a short distance from the stage, maybe 20 feet. also, there were three very inconsiderate women/girls beside me who would not shut up. i could hear them screaming at each other loudly, carrying on a conversation during all but the sing-a-long/dance tunes. several folks, including me shot daggers at them, but they never got the hint. i wanted to tell them to go talk outside.
also, i was in general admission on the floor (no seats). there was a late 40's-50ish couple who were pushing their way toward the front, nudging everyone out of their way. as they nudged past us, the woman told me she was looking for her 13 year old daughter. here are her exact words (what's wrong with this picture)..."i'm looking for my 13 year old daughter...it's her first concert...the last concert she saw was no doubt." can you believe she actually said that? they ended up a few feet to my right when the croud shut them down from getting any closer. i heard her say to the folks on her right..."we just got married last wednesday...isn't he sweet? he bought us tickets for a wedding gift!" what a liar!
sometimes it pains me how some ig fans act. i can't believe anyone who would act like this would find any commonality in ig music. it never ceases to amaze me!!
great show!
