it's interesting that "let it ring" was playing at that time but that woman's mind was probably so closed that she wouldn't have been able to take in the message even if she was listening.  i first heard that song while pope john paul's body was being carried around the vatican in a procession and it spoke volumes to me for so many reasons.  it's a powerful song and i'll be curious to see what kind of momentum it will take on.

well, i've been listening to this cd non-stop for a week.  so, now it is time
for a discussion (remember the old days on the list when we used to discuss ig
songs?).

i really like...
put it out for good
driver education
rural faggot
let it ring

here is a cool story about "let it ring."  last thursday, i was stuck in traffic
during rush hour heading down 270 south (st. louis).  i made an attempt to get
around the traffic by getting off onto hwy 40 and taking ballas road as far
south as i could.  this took me past st. john's and missouri baptist hostpitals.
the traffic was horrendous, so i couldn't go anywhere.

at the entrance to st. john's, there were several women picketing.  there was
one woman with a poster that was literally bigger than life-size.  it was one of
those disgusting pictures of an aborted fetus.  the others were marching with
signs that read, "there is an abortionist working at st. john's medical center."
of course, st. john's is a catholic hospital, and we know that view on abortion.
yet, i'm sure there is more than one doctor who works at that hospital/medical
center who has performed abortions.

as i was sitting in this traffic, i had prom playing in the cd player.  while i
was stopped and a captive audience, the "big poster lady" proceeded to bring her
disgusting display over to my car and began to preach to me.  i thought it was
very funny that at that moment, "let it ring" was playing.  i told her that i
did not share her views, that i felt abortion was a personal decision to be made
by the woman (and possibly the father) involved.  she went on telling me that
the bible said this and the bible said that.  i told her that i think she is
wrong, along with her friends, and that she had too much time on her hands.  she
became very brusque, then and asked me what i thought "hell" would be like.  i
answered, "it is probably hot--just like it is now--and i bet eternity there
would be filled by annoying persons such as yourself, cramming their views down
everyone's throat!"  then, i asked her to get away from my car and leave me
alone.  she replied by sticking her head in
to my
window and trying to force me to side with her.  i reached for the volume on my
stereo, turned up "let it ring" loud enough for her and all her cohorts to hear.
then i yelled, "lady, if you don't take your f*$&ing head out of my window, i
will roll it up in it!"  just then the traffic started moving and i took off,
forcing her to pull herself out of my personal space or be dragged along with my
car as it sped down the road!

ok, onward.  does anyone have any thoughts/insight on "rodeo?"  what is this
song about?  is rodeo literal or metaphoric?  what do you think, "...i am just a
rodeo calf with tender feet and sewn on horns" means?  my interpretation in this
song's context is that amy is maybe masquerading as a tough and worldly dyke,
but it is just a front, and she really has no clue about life or love.  does
anyone else have a different take?

i also would like to see what you all think of the meaning of "sober girl."  the
rest of the song doesn't seem to go with the first line.  what does she mean by,
"i'm a sober girl, not for any good reason?"  it reminds me of an article i read
in a wine magazine years ago, which was an interview with emily (and maybe
leslie) about their wine preferences and such.  in the article, emily said that
amy never drinks with them after the shows.  she said she didn't really know
why, implying that it wasn't because of an alcohol problem.  is it that maybe
amy just doesn't like alcohol?

input please!

thanks,
toye

hey folks,

punk =91prom=92 a pleasure
amy ray discusses growing up gay in atlanta, new cd, local concert

by dyana bagby
apr. 22, 2005

i cast my vote for amy ray as prom queen. no, actually, for prom king.
better yet, make it both, because when it comes to gender, it=92s fluid
on the lesbian rocker=92s new cd =93prom.=94

finding ways to blend gender and sexuality are consistent themes
throughout =93prom,=94 ray=92s second cd sans emily saliers and the folk
foundation that makes up their duo indigo girls.

the photo montages on the album=92s covers and insert feature the singer
dressed up as several high school stereotypes of both genders: the
football player, the cheerleader, the punk rocker, the stoner =97 and
most impressively, as both characters in a male-female prom couple.

released on ray=92s own independent music label, decatur-based daemon
records, =93prom=94 is a strong follow up to her powerful 2001 solo debut
=93stag,=94 which featured fellow female punk trailblazers joan jett and
the butchies.

this time around, ray=92s driving guitar riffs and angry yet tender and
heartbreaking voice join forces with female musicians danielle howle,
nineteen forty-five, former beastie boys and luscious jackson drummer
kate schellenbach as well as former team dresch guitarists jody bleyle
and donna dresch.

the combinations serve up a head-shaking, toe-tapping missive on
queerness and growing up in the rural south.

=93i=92ve lived in a rural area about 12 years, and [this cd] is all
stories from that perspective,=94 ray, 41, says in a recent telephone
interview.

ray says she hopes the stories on =93prom=94 connect with rural teens who
feel different and need to hear sympathetic and empathetic voices.

=93it=92s so hard in [rural] areas,=94 she says. =93we=92re still talking about
feminism and are at the bare minimum of discussing gay issues.=94

=93prom=94 explores a =93dance between gender and sexuality, man and woman,
youth and adulthood, authority and rebellion,=94 ray says.

the cd has a definite political message, but it also serves as an ode
to a time in the singer=92s own life that she embraced and still
cherishes.

=93i really loved high school,=94 she says. =93i don=92t want to romanticize
it, but even the hard parts, i reveled in it. i really was so romantic
about it. i was well aware i felt like an outcast, but that was ok
because all my heroes were outcasts.=94

heavily involved in student government at shamrock high school in
atlanta (now merged with druid hills high school), ray remembers
planning and attending proms.

it was her senior year in high school in 1982 when she first fell for
a woman.

=93my senior year, i fell in love with a woman, but i didn=92t know what
=91gay=92 meant,=94 she remembers.

some may now consider metro atlanta as a gay haven in an otherwise
conservative state, but during the 1980s in the suburbs, gay civil
rights were still a fresh idea, ray explains.

but love was love, and there was no denying ray and her girlfriend=92s
relationship. the two went to their senior prom separately, but they
were with each other at the dance. the relationship continued into
college.

=93we started sleeping together our first year in college, and that=92s
when i realized, =91oh, i need to hide this,=92=94 ray says. =93at that time,
we were both sorting out who we were and who were our allies.=94

that relationship lasted about two years and involved serious and
often disturbing interactions with her parents.

=93it was rough for awhile, dealing with =91i=92m a pervert=92 and fighting so
much,=94 she says. =93but my parents are so great now; it=92s very hard to
remember how hard it was. they are just incredibly supportive.=94

on one of the cd=92s strongest tracks, =93rural faggot,=94 ray conflates the
stories of two young men she knows into a truth-based song about
growing up gay in the south.

=93this song came from discussions we had,=94 ray explains. =93one was
really gay, one is now a gay basher and the song explores this
struggle against himself.=94

=93the kids i came across in the rural areas were fascinated with who i
was, which was quite interesting,=94 ray says. =93and this just stuck with
me. these were just images of really compelling people.=94

on the song, =93blender,=94 ray tackles head on the questions and stigmas
people face about their identities in a world shackled by labels.

=93i had a sex education/without a word for my gender/all these
half-hearted tries/put em in a blender,=94

ray admits in high school she listened mainly to southern rock. but
when she reached college and began hearing to the voices and words of
such punk legends as patti smith, phil spector, the replacements and
the clash, ray says she found a home.

=93i felt completely liberated by it,=94 she says. =93it felt like the voice
i had been looking for.=94

ray says that the fierce style of punk taps into her masculine psyche,
but she is unsure if that mentality comes from the nature of the music
itself or from a society that expects rebellion from boys and
propriety from girls.

=93i don=92t know where it comes from,=94 she admits. =93but when i heard this
other music, it opened a whole new world for me. now it=92s a part of my
life.=94

to me, this line is pointing out the hypocracy of people like fred phelps wh=

hate and evil.

i really like the final verse when she reclaims the name of jesus for everyo=

hey everybody!!! we butchies, after 7 years of playing music together, have
decided to take what we will call a "hiatus".

here's the scoop (inside scoop): simply, we're all ready and desiring to
"move on" and pursue other crazy shit in this crazy life. we still love each
other and have loved loved loved our experiences and all our fans and in a
godly way all our enemies too (not love them as much though). our last
record, make yr life, stands as testament to the place we're all at
individually, and although many of you reading this may feel sad, you should
remember that we're calling it "a day" in the most positive of ways. looks
like we'll do a few shows throughout the spring, some random ones in the
summer, and perhaps more in the fall and that'll probably be it for a while.

as of now it looks like melissa will be drummer slut and play with all sorts
of different folks (eg: gretchen phillips), and she'll pursue her career on
snl, with a plan b of becoming a cloud. alison has decided to go back to her
roots of zoology and is looking to get a phd and be a scientist, either that
or maybe plan b of becoming an essential oil. kaia is moving to portland or
and plans on working at hooters mostly only because she is currently
obsessed with "short shorts" and thinks she'll look great and trim in orange
short shorts. she's planning on keeping up in musical ventures and her plan
b is to become a pair of short shorts.

we'll still keep our website up and running for the time being, and you can
contact us directly if you'd like to (see contacts link), we are all
relatively flaky in returning emails but we will try plus we love and
appreciate hearing from you.

just like the song, we've "had the time of our lives" and dirty danced our
way across this bizarre country for a damn long time, acquiring new friends
and fans along our way.
thank you
thank you
thank you for all your love, support, high fives, low fives, gifts,
presence, enthusiasm, undergarments, overgarments, hospitality (all those of
you who housed/entertained/fed us) and just for being you. we have been as
grateful to all our fans as y'all have been grateful to us, keep freaky
queer being yourself loving yourself.

love,
kaia
melissa
alison
(aka the butchies)

hey also! keep checkin' back to our website cuz we're gonna have a merch
sale soon, and kaia's putting out a new cd that'll be available at our
online store and more shows will be posted and kaia's working on a sort of
"butchies memoir" thing, it's a book so it'll be by chapter. mel will send
out e-list updates about all this stuff too. so don't just go away quite
yet, ok?

our fans and in a <br>godly way all our enemies too (not love them as much =
though). our last <br>record, make yr life, stands as testament to the plac=
e we're all at <br>individually, and although many of you reading this may =
feel sad, you should <br>remember that we're calling it "a day" in the most=
positive of ways. looks <br>like we'll do a few shows throughout the sprin=
g, some random ones in the <br>summer, and perhaps more in the fall and tha=
t'll probably be it for a while. <br><br>as of now it looks like melissa wi=
ll be drummer slut and play with all sorts <br>of different folks (eg: gret=
chen phillips), and she'll pursue her career on <br>snl, with a plan b of b=
ecoming a cloud. alison has decided to go back to her <br>roots of zoology =
and is looking to get a phd and be a scientist, either that <br>or maybe pl=
an b of becoming an essential oil. kaia is moving to portland or <br>and pl=
ans on working at hooters mostly only because she is currently <br>obsessed=
with "short shorts" and thinks she'll look great and trim in orange <br>sh=
ort shorts. she's planning on keeping up in musical ventures and her plan <=
br>b is to become a pair of short shorts. <br><br>we'll still keep our webs=
ite up and running for the time being, and you can <br>contact us directly =
if you'd like to (see contacts link), we are all <br>relatively flaky in re=
turning emails but we will try plus we love and <br>appreciate hearing from=
you. <br><br>just like the song, we've "had the time of our lives" and dir=
ty danced our <br>way across this bizarre country for a damn long time, acq=
uiring new friends <br>and fans along our way. <br>thank you <br>thank you =
<br>thank you for all your love, support, high fives, low fives, gifts, <br=
>presence, enthusiasm, undergarments, overgarments, hospitality (all those =
of <br>you who housed/entertained/fed us) and just for being you. we have b=
een as <br>grateful to all our fans as y'all have been grateful to us, keep=
freaky <br>queer being yourself loving yourself. <br><br>love, <br>kaia <b=
r>melissa <br>alison <br>(aka the butchies) <br><br>hey also! keep checkin'=
back to our website cuz we're gonna have a merch <br>sale soon, and kaia's=
putting out a new cd that'll be available at our <br>online store and more=
shows will be posted and kaia's working on a sort of <br>"butchies memoir"=
thing, it's a book so it'll be by chapter. mel will send <br>out e-list up=
dates about all this stuff too. so don't just go away quite <br>yet, ok? <b=
