hi...i've been toying for years about getting a mandolin and teaching myself to play. after sugarland live this weekend and seeing how much fun kristian bush has playing his, i've made the decison that i have to get me one.

anyone out there in list-land have any advice on where to start looking? i've owned guitars for years, so i'm thinking the transition will be fairly easy. however i really don't know much about mandolin makers and models so i could use some advice on where a good place to start would be. any thoughts?

thanks...deb

way after prom
indigo girl amy ray reflects on high school in her second solo outing

by erika gonzalez, rocky mountain news
may 2, 2005

many of us would rather endure a root canal than relive high school.

but amy ray - half of the indigo girls - had no problem mining those
painful but formative years for her second solo effort, the aptly
titled prom.

>from the catchy and somewhat sentimental driver education, which
documents ray's crushes on boys who "taste like marlboro cigarettes
and reese's peanut butter cups," to rural faggot, an electric
guitar-driven ode to a gay childhood friend too afraid to come out of
the closet, the collection of coming-of-age songs sounds as if it was
lifted directly from ray's old yearbook.

but ray insists that that the trip down memory lane wasn't planned.

"i'm always in this continuous process of writing, and things started
coming out that were thematically tied together," says ray, who will
visit the fox theatre tonight with the family outing. "it's not like i
consciously said i'm going to write a group of songs about this."

but ray acknowledges that high school was on her mind.

"i started writing a lot of these songs when i was falling in love
with the person i'm with now. when you're starting a new relationship,
a lot of the ritual is talking about the past and when you came out,
and a lot of those stories are high school stories."

ray says her high school years in decatur, ga., were deeply
transforming. it was during high school that ray (an outspoken
lesbian) fell in love with a woman for the first time and hooked up
musically with indigo girls partner emily saliers. it was also during
this period that ray, who spent much of her teenage years listening to
country rock, began to embrace alternative artists such as the clash
and patti smith.

and that influence is clear on blender, a punk rock anthem that
expresses ray's frustration with gender and racial inequality in the
music business.

that hard edge infuses much of the material on prom, with the
exception of the stripped-down rodeo, which sounds like a tribute to a
first love.

"it's a current love that feels like the first time i've fallen in
love," says ray, who wrote the song about her partner, a graduate film
student at columbia university. "i've never really known this kind of
love."

ray may be happy personally, but professionally she still finds
herself hitting brick walls - particularly when she's promoting an
independent release such as prom. the album is being distributed by
ray's own independent label, daemon records, which she started more
than a decade ago to help provide exposure for bands she liked that
had difficulty attracting big-label attention.

but without the backing of a big name behind her, she says, gaining
radio play for the record has been difficult.

"even a station like kbco, which has been so supportive of the indigo
girls, is very hesitant to support me doing a solo project," she says.
"they're playing huge bands, and i don't think they consider this in
the class of music they're playing."

but ray doesn't seem to mind pushing the record through a tour. fans,
however, have had to adjust to hearing a more rocking ray than they're
used to seeing at indigo girls shows.

"sometimes an audience just stands there and listens, and i'm
frustrated because i'm up there moving around so much," she says with
a laugh.

and in case you're wondering, ray, who was president of her class, did
attend her prom. but she says it was motivated more by curiosity than
by peer pressure.

"i didn't go to the prom because i wanted to fit in. i did it because
i wanted to see what it was like," she says.

no doubt, fans of prom are happy she did.

has
been done quite often so i don't get how it fits in as a rarity. am i

seems like there was an in-studio version of "ghost" (either on world

it was on general foods. in addition to some neato key
changes, it also sports some not-so-fabulous squeaks by amy
and emily, who were both recovering from head colds at the
time (they talk about it in the next bit of conversation with
pat dinizio.) i wonder if they re-recorded it, or if they have
another rendition of that same version... because as cute as
the gf recording is, it's not exactly their finest sound.

yah, there's a rare version of ghost on attack of the killer b-sides. i'm
also wondering about shed your skin. could this be the tom morello remix?

more importantly, what's missing? (personally, i'd loved to have seen blood
quantom on there... *sigh*)

you vortexers are seeing this for a second time.  cope
with it:)

nice things do happen.

i flew out for a couple of bay area ig shows last
july, and at the berkeley show i was sitting by myself
in the pit. to my right was this straight couple in
their mid-50s, perhaps. the guy was the one who'd
bought the tickets and brought his wife, who i dont
think knew much about ig. as the concert progressed,
they got more and more excited, and he kept going
"see, didnt i tell you they're awesome??" as i'm wont
to do at shows when i find someone who really seems to
be enjoying themselves, i told them if they'd give me
their address, i'd send them a copy of the show once i
got it on disc. probably within a month of the show, i
sent them copies of the discs. i never heard back from
them, but i didnt really expect to, since i dont hear
back from most of the people i do that for.

late last week, i get a letter forwarded to me from my
bronx address. i have no idea who its from; i dont
recognize the cali address, and i rarely get letters
(but often boots) from addresses i dont recognize. as
you can probably predict, the letter was from this
couple. they apologized for not writing sooner, and
thanked me for the cds. then they offered me a ticket
to one of the cali shows this june (ferget which one)
and even a bunk at their house if i needed it! i was
sort of floored; these people are basically perfect
strangers and here they are offering me a ticket to an
ig show, and a place to crash while i'm 3000 miles
from home. i havent written them back yet - i will
sadly have to decline - but i wanted to share this
with yall. consider it your heartwarming story for the day.

hey all --

     i was spring-cleaning and found a couple  ig-related things that i was
just going to throw away, but then i thought i'd  offer 'em up to the list
first, just in case anybody was interested.

1.) a stack of 7 indigo girls coasters, (or "beer mats), with "become you"
on one side (blue), and the official website on the back (yellow).

2.) 3 copies of atlanta's "stomp and stammer" music news mag from may '97,
with ig on the cover.

what - you mean you cant afford it after selling how many burned cds on
ebay???????

80 bucks a piece - oh - i'm sorry - you must be soooo broke...

oh, and werent these discs created by other fans or other people - you just
had to make copies...

i'd want to hear the greek theater sb promo tape from 1992 -

that's a rarity - even neil h. doesnt have the full concewrt (and his cd
collection puts most stores i have been in - including rdr - to shame - tho
rdr still blows my mind with the amount of rem vinyl they had in stock....

this is the best ig news i have heard since 1200 curfews was announced.
i totally agree about missing holy city and agree with sue about
melissa being a great cover.  of course i am not surprised melissa was
omitted.  wasn't it released on back on the bus y'all?  i'd have to
dust that off to check.

i am very excited about winthrop as well as cold as ice.  i'm shocked
to see never stop as emily has been quoted on many a boot as saying she
thinks that song sucks in a songwriting sense.    i would have loved a
few more old covers from the early days.  house at pooh corner, love of
the common people or billy joel's summer highland falls would have
really made for a rarity.  but i ain't complainin!  can't wait for
june.--greg

hi

there's a conference on women's ordination in ottawa this summer: women's ordination

i'm doing a little volunteer work for them, and am seeking related sites and communities,
which is mostly the catholic reform world.

anyone know the www whereabouts of

    * sistersite
    * christian leadership conference - not southern christian leadership conference
    * church reform

google comes up dry on all of these - the sistersite found is several years old, says it's
moving to a geocities address that's no longer in use.

any other catholic reform sites or sources would be handy.

it makes sense that they included professionally recorded material like "i don't wanna talk about it" (from the "philadelphia" film soundtrack) and "i'll give you my skin" (which was a benefit release from their early years). but i must say i'm a bit dissapointed in the final selection.

of all the songs i requested, only "winthrop" made the cut. i'm grateful for that, but i still wanted "official" releases of "heartache central time", "play it again, sam", and "beauty to disaster". oh well, maybe the next rarities album!

finlandia was composed by jean sibelius in 1899 as an orchestral tone=20
poem about, naturally, finland, his native country.  the final section=20=

of the work contains the familiar melody, but it didn't have any=20
official lyrics until 1939, when finnish poet v.a. koskenniemi created=20=

the text which sibelius designated the official libretto for the piece.

the english translation of the finnish text:

finland, behold, thy daylight now is dawning,
the threat of night has now been driven away.
the skylark calls across the light of morning,
the blue of heaven lets it have its way,
and now the day the powers of night is scorning:
thy daylight dawns, o finland of ours!

finland, arise, and raise towards the highest
thy head now crowned with mighty memory.
finland, arise, for to the world thou criest
that thou hast thrown off thy slavery,
beneath oppression=b4s yoke thou never liest.
thy morning=b4s come, o finland of ours!

these lyrics.

the more familiar english words for this tune were written in 1934 by=20
lloyd stone, and are known more correctly as "a song of peace". =20

i wish they had included this - this is the only other
one that i'd really like to see on the rarities
compilation . . . .well, i can't complain - they are
including "mona lisa & mad hatters" and "uncle johns
band" so i'm really looking forward to professional
recordings of those.

as i recall, that was a duet between amy and michelle mallone, so probably
doesn't belong on the rarities collection (at least, not the first

hi, gang!  my name is gina lindsey, and i posted the following rather innocuous comments (below) to the list yesterday.  and then today, i got these very kind and gentle responses from someone that i don't even know!  i have a suspicion that there may be another gina on this list (surely not a gina lindsey, though!), and this is a case of mistaken identity?  i can only conclude this as i myself do not have an ig museum, and i have never sold anything on ebay, let alone pirated music!  so i'm not sure for whom these misspelled messages of love and peace were intended, but i thought i'd post them here so that the intended recipient might view them.  i'm just sure she'd want to, seeing how they are so uplifting.  ;-)

maybe if you werent such a horrid female dog and sold dozens of burned discs at 80 bucks a pop for 3 cdrs, for recordings you traded for or got off napster, flaunt your own indigo musuem (which is just funny, cuz you got nothing compared to most ig fans i know) or otherwise be such a rediculously bitchy person, you'd have great karma. but you never learn, so i hope you never hear it...

that's a rarity - even neil h. doesnt have the full concewrt (and his cd collection puts most stores i have been in - including rdr - to shame - tho rdr still blows my mind with the amount of rem vinyl they had in stock....

there was already a professionally recorded version of ujb, on the
"deadicated" cd.

well, it sounds like it'll be a fun release even if there are glaring
omissions... :)

wow!  this whole time i thought she was referring to "straight gay alliance."  i equated it with that given the line..."i'm an over achiever of the wrong persuasion...a new gender nation with a new desire."  and now that you say that, "straight gay alliance" is saga, right?  thanks!  now i have to go listen 1000 more times (because of the new context)   haha ;)

i thought most schools called it the gay-straight alliance, or gsa, (as
opposed to "straight-gay alliance")...  i could be wrong,  though.  at any rate, i
doubt there was any such thing in existence back  when amy was in highschool.
heck, i graduated in '89, (what, 7 years  later?), and there wasn't even any
talk about it at that time.  for  me, i think i really started hearing alot
about glbt issues in the mainstream  right around the time clinton got elected,
in '92, and then with that big march  on washington and "lesbian chic"
(phhht!) thing that happened in '93-'94.   before that, there just wasn't alot of
talk at all...  probably part of the  reason i didn't figure out i was gay,
(which none of my friends seemed all that  surprised about), until i was in
college, in the early 90's.  just think...  all those years in an all-girls school --
wasted.  jk  ;)

anyway, yeah, sga = student gov't association

note:  i started this tuesday, but didn't have time to get back to it  until
today, thursday.

amy's show in boulder was last night.  a good time was had by  all.

i had the privilege of being inside the house for sound check.   needless to
say, it was very cool to be in there.  they played bits and  pieces of a
number of prom songs for about 40 minutes.  not much was  happening in the way of
lighting, so the view wasn't the best, but still, it was  very cool to be in
there.

my friends were in the front of the line outside, but i chose to stay  inside
until doors.  when doors opened, most of the people went up to the  stage.
my friends andy, laura, my fiance karen, and i all staked out space  along the
center rail at the back of the pit.  i didn't feel like looking  up at amy.

after everyone got settled, we left in search of food, coming back before
the opening band, family outing.  much like the ig opener i saw a few  months
ago (can't seem to remember their name right now), i can see what amy  sees in
them, but they're just not all that good, at least not as of yet.

right after the opener, there was a brief meet and greet w/ amy, to  which
me, karen, and my friend ibby were invited.  it was just the three of  us, amy,
three other fans who may have been radio winners, and amy's merch  person,
heather.  being right before her set, she was feeling rushed, so i  just played
tourist with everyone else, having her sign promo posters for each  of our two
kids (andrew 6 1/2 and emily 3 1/2, both of whom sing ig in the car)  and a
copy of prom for me.

right before show time, amy was out on stage finishing up the set, when i
realized that i just couldn't be so far away (equivalent of an elevated 7th row
center).  i told my friends and my woman that i loved them, and i headed  off
to find a better spot.  i settled on the same spot i picked when  melissa
played a radio industry event there in '99 - on the side stairs, even  with the
second standing row on the floor, but elevated about 3 feet off the  floor,
with a rail to lean on in front of me.

it was great to look around and see so many wonderful people.  garian  and
angela and skeeter and dave were all up front on the floor.  elizabeth  and
catherine and stacye and julie were all across from me off the floor, on the
side, house r.  andy, laura, and ibby were on the center rail.  paul  and his
friend were hanging back.  where was marci?  where was  kat?

unfortunately, the house was only about 1/2 full, maybe 300 people.   it's a
terrible shame.  if amy had mentioned the date at the ig show in  denver a
month ago, it would have sold out within a week, imo.  i don't  know if it's some
policy she's made up for herself - to not mention solo stuff  at an ig show,
but from a marketing standpoint, it was very, very foolish.   those 3000
people were her target market in the denver/boulder area.  like  i said, that's all
it would have taken to pack the joint.  i'm sure that  most of those people
have no idea that this show even happened.

but back to the show.  the show itself was fabulous, but entirely too  short.
what she played kicked some ass, but the show was only 1 hour and 5
minutes, which just plain sucked.  i'm astounded that she didn't learn all  the songs
from the two albums and then toss in a cover tune or two or  three.  the
production sheet had said 9:15-10:30 plus encore.  that's  still a damn short
show, imo, but respectable for those with a punk ethic.   (me, i was happy with
victor wooten's 3 1/2 hour show the other night!)   1:05 was lame.  she claimed
to not know any more songs.  someone  shouted out to play them again.  the
crowd (me included) loved the  idea.  unfortunately, it didn't happen.

i don't know prom, yet, but i think she played all of that plus half of
stag.  lucystoners, mountains of glory, put it out, and rural faggot were
particular highlights, imo.  also, imo, lucystoners is one of best  songs anyone has
written in the past five years.

oh, and michelle malone was there with her gf trish (nor sure what  her/their
boulder connection is, but michell was here last summer for the ig
chautauqua show, too).  unfortunately, she didn't play.

i think that's it.  i'm out of time.

straight and gay alliance is a separate organization from gsa.  it is called saga, and when i originally posted i forgot it had the a in there also (sga).  that is why i made an obviously incorrect assumption.

i also thought about the fact that gsa was not in existence back when amy was in school, but thought she might have amended it to be about a person such as herself who is in school now, in 2005...

you can check out saga at the following site, for one.  there are a number of websites out there on this organization; however, i must admit that i don't know much about their activities, how they were founded, etc.

actually... mecca on thursday nights is "upscale" - and definitely a
very different crowd than the lexington. as my friends would say...
the lex is very "mission dyke" whereas mecca is more professional
lesbian. of course there is some crossover, but that's the general
mix of things. i happen to like both a lot. it all depends on your
mood and the moment. there's also a newish scene happening up in
bernal heights on wednesday nights, though i can't remember the name.

you'll find mecca in the castro, across from the safeway.

damn... i was hoping for chiapas bound or ballad of squeaky fromme! seems
kinda lame they are including songs that ended up on compilations... i was
looking for more along the lines of stuff they'd only ever done live but that had
never ended up on anything commercially available.

bummer. at least winthrop made it!

this is not technically ig related, but i noticed that someone had posted that beth amsel was coming to do a gig somewhere in pa soon?  well, we had beth come play at the college where i teach just a couple of months ago, and she was wonderful!  i particularly adored her cover of duran duran's "the chauffeur" (don't knock it 'til you've heard her do it!).  anyway, if you love the girls, i know you'd love beth, too.  run, do not walk to her nearest gig.

i'd like to second gina's plug for beth amsel.

beth is like lying on a blanket in the sun on your day off from work.  if pa
weren't so far away from wa, i'd be at that show in the front row.

hey folks,

here's a review of amy's recent salt lake city show, from the salt

---begin forwarded article---
amy ray rocks out at her casual slc 'prom' date

by dan nailen
the salt lake tribune
salt lake tribune

folk artist equally adept at fronting a full-blown band

it takes some nerve to step out from a safe place and try
something new, even when you're talking about something like pop
music.

of course, when that leap results in something as strong as indigo
girl amy ray's new solo album, "prom," it's easy to overlook any risk
involved in putting the indigo girls on hold and hitting the club
circuit for a rock tour.

wednesday at the lo-fi caf=e9, ray delivered a set heavy on "prom"
songs for a few hundred fans curious to see what a top-notch folkie
can do with a full-blown rock band. and it is quite a band: guitarist
les nuby, bassist jody bleyle and drummer will lochamy are top-notch
players who locked into step easily behind ray for 16 songs of rock,
punk and folk that showed she knows how to handle a rock
configuration.

some technical glitches aside, the show was smooth and the mood
casual. ray talked up the audience with tales of stops at little
america in wyoming and shopping at decades second-hand store in salt
lake city, and shouted out props for public radio station krcl, which
was broadcasting the show.

"you have a very special community here," ray said, kicking off
show-opener "let it ring," the closing track on "prom." the muscular
music delivered by ray and her band announced this would be different
from an indigo girls show, although it is fitting that ray started a
show featuring her "punk" side with a mandolin in her hands.

ray followed up with three "prom" tunes, all featuring tasty licks
from nuby's guitar and some fine harmony vocals from him and bleyle.
"put it out for good," "give in" and "rural faggot" all focus on ray's
memories of growing up in the rural south, and all hit their mark.

"blender" was the punkiest song of the night, a high-speed thrasher
that skewers sexism in the punk-rock community. ray followed it with
"a slow song, but it's still loud," describing a track from "prom"
that sounds most like the indigo girls, "covered for you."

ray closed in a flurry of raucous cuts including "sober girl,"
"lucystoners" from her first solo album, "stag," and the insanely
catchy "driver education." "mtns. of glory," played near show's end,
was an epic rocker in the hands of ray and company.

while no one wants to see the indigo girls partnership come to an
end, here's hoping ray keeps this rocking little side project going.
