well, this is my first time with internet access since early on 5/12. it looks like no one else has posted to review the santa ana and la shows, so..... i'll be brief.
saw amy and family outing load in at the la show. the show itself was good, i didn't feel like she was as engaged with the audience as at the sf show. amy wore plaid pants and an elvis tee with the sleeves cut off.  she played...god, what did she play? i want to say everything from prom? she may have skipped rodeo. she said she had planned on skipping lucy stoners that night, but some guy requested it so she played it after all. we met the sweetest girl at the show, it was her first amy concert and she was super excited. i love meeting people through ig. saw amy's girlfriend at the show-- not my type, but beautiful and seems very nice.  my ears were killing me at the end of the show. resolved to bring ear plugs the next night. santa ana--the venue was kind of in the middle of nowhere. amy was much more talkative at this show. during family outing's set they were trying to come up with names for amy's band, and when she was on stage later she said she'd heard the names. she th
en decided that amy ray and the allies would be the best name. she said they ate too heavily before the show and then had some caffeine and played pig. she was wearing a red tee shirt and jeans. i think she played all of prom and then some cuts from stag. she talked about not knowing what was marketable and what wasn't. she also mentioned the cat that inspired johnny r. she said he'd had some urination issues and after she'd taken him to the vet for the 5th time the vet said to her, 'amy, it's not a health issue, it's behavioral." somehow it was funny the way she said it. hmmmm i just managed to make a great show seem kind of boring, maybe it's cause i'm so tired today....
thanks spike again for the concert call from tucson...

hey folks,

here's an article about emily's appearance at the washington national
cathedral with her dad.  you can read it online at
http://www.infozine.com/news/stories/op/storiesview/sid/7738/

-sherlyn

---begin forwarded article---
monday, may 16, 2005
indigo girl and dad blend sacred and secular music
by tiffany rae leonard - one half of the indigo girls joined her
father, a professor of theology and worship, to show what happens when
saturday night meets sunday morning.

washington, d.c. - infozine - emily saliers, a member of the folk-rock
duo, and her father, don e. saliers, a professor at the chandler
school of theology at emory university, visited the washington
national cathedral tuesday to discuss their new book, "a song to sing,
a life to live."

the book developed from a conversation between emily and her father
that explores two generation, two genres of music and two outlooks on
faith. they planned to write an essay aimed at teens, but an editor
said it would make a better book.

"we offer it as an invitation to embrace a broader, deeper vision of
the power and role of music in human life - and especially to embrace
the spiritual and religious dimensions of attentive listening,
collaborative music making, and honest sharing." emily and her father
wrote in the book.

"it came a sort of a surprise when i was told about the book idea. i
was afraid of letting my fans down," emily told the audience.

emily talked about the difficultly she encountered in the project
because she does not practice a particular religion, and her father
does.

"i realized that it was going to have religious connections and
connotations. i felt a great fear," emily said in the book.

both said it was a joy to work on.

during the lecture, the father-daughter duo alternated songs and
stories to convey their many points on how music has the power to
connect, inspire and console people.

"if it had not been for certain music, many movements would not have
occurred, such as apartheid, civil right movement," said saliers, who
has been a church musician in addition to his teaching duties.

the duo's performance of the song "hammer and nail" that transitioned
to the refrain in a second song - "let us break bread together" - left
audience members in awe.

"i loved it. i love how the secular and sacred blend through church,"
said allison stone, 32, of baltimore, after watching the performance.

"i loved it," said eric manning, of silver spring, md., a fan of the
indigo girls and a songwriter.

"i normally hear their music in concerts and things like that, but to
hear it acoustically like this was amazing." manning said.

the event ended with a question and answer session and a book signing.

gee...

i was in dc getting picked up by another huge ig fan the same day as
emily's speech - we both completely blanked at the lecture (because if
either of us had remembered, we certainly would have gone...)

and you folks in dc have incredible places. like the kennedy center, which
was freaking incredible.

bummed i missed emily, but in the grand scheme of things, my recent trip to
dc was sooooooo awesome, that missing es doesn't really even register.

ummm. missing a member of ig playing blocks from me on a trip...and pigs
are not flying...i guess that's a good thing.
