while it is true that sponsors will underwrite the cost of mammograms
for every xx number of hits this site gets, this email, which has been
circulating in its exact same form for almost 3 years now, isn't
entirely accurate -- this site is highly successful and while the
organization does set a goal for the # of free mammograms donated,
they've never had "trouble getting enough people to click on their
site daily."

so, click away because it is a worthy cause, indeed, but pass the link
along with a few personal words, rather than these inaccurate ones,
and the overall effect will undoubtedly be greater.

hmm, i guess this means the president will decide not to send astronauts to
mars. god knows how much devastation they will see from there.....deb:
       houston (aug. 4) - commander eileen collins said astronauts on shuttle
discovery had seen widespread environmental destruction on earth and warned
on thursday that greater care was needed to protect natural resources.
       her comments came as nasa pondered whether to send astronauts out on
an extra spacewalk to repair additional heat-protection damage on the first
shuttle mission since the 2003 columbia disaster.
       discovery is linked with the international space station and orbiting
220 miles above the earth.
       "sometimes you can see how there is erosion, and you can see how there
is deforestation. it's very widespread in some parts of the world," collins
said in a conversation from space with japanese officials in tokyo, including
prime minister junichiro koizumi.
       "we would like to see, from the astronauts' point of view, people take
good care of the earth and replace the resources that have been used," said
collins, who was standing with japanese astronaut soichi noguchi in front of a
japanese flag and holding a colorful fan.collins, flying her fourth shuttle
mission, said the view from space made clear that earth's atmosphere must be
protected, too.
       "the atmosphere almost looks like an eggshell on an egg, it's so very
thin," she said. "we know that we don't have much air, we need to protect what
we have."
===
"both the conservatives and the progressives seem to me to be full of the
same kind of intolerance, arrogance, empty-headedness, and to be dominated by
different kinds of conformism: in either case the dread of being left out of
their reference group. i have to go my own way ... " -- thomas merton, july 1968

since i was going through dozens of e-mail messages and getting irritated b=
y=20
the list e-mails with nigc (and they really were *n*igc...) i decided to=20
bring up some random topics just so i could stop getting "indigo girls"=20
e-mails about things someone has decided ig would like.=20
1. what is put it out for good about? put what out for good? my friend has=
=20
a theory and i like it but wonder who has heard straight from the horse's=
=20
mouth anything about the *specific* content of that (besides the *general*=
=20
high-school-queer-searching-identity themes running through the record).=20
specific, as in re: driver education "this guy sat behind me in one class=
=20
who had a unique smell of the cigarette he just smoked and he always ate=20
peanut butter cups.." as i read in one article. who has read/heard a simila=
r=20
quote about put it out for good? please advise.=20
2. i work at a large chain store that sells music and happen to know that=
=20
rarities is getting a bit more attention and product placement than all tha=
t=20
we let in did. this doesn't necessarily mean anything other than that i=20
would say that while sony clearly has not promoted them as aggressively in=
=20
later years they are not in fact completely blowing it off. the cynical=20
among us could of course say "they want to milk every last drop out of thei=
r=20
cash cow" on this record but i would not say that. and i have been known to=
=20
be cynical. i haven't drawn a conclusion or formed an opinion about the=20
marketing of it. i just think it's interesting to note that while many of u=
s=20
hardcore-ites on this list were like "'rarities?' please! i have all those=
=20
tunes and more from the show on the pier at the thing with my friend who=20
drove eight thousand miles and walked barefoot uphill both ways in the snow=
=20
to see them break a string when the internet was in someone's garage..."=20
that there are many many ig fans out there who are *all over this album* an=
d=20
delighted to have it.
3. <sarcasm> speaking of product placement, doesn't amy seem to be putting=
=20
a lot of brand names in her songs these last few years? hiding out in the=
=20
comfort inn...or getting drunk and mean at dairy queen...to say nothing of=
=20
the aforementioned marlboro, reese's, and pepsi crammed in one verse when=
=20
she goes solo...? not so emily, who gets a job "at the grocery store" and=
=20
needs a generic "cold beer," or passes "the bottle" around while somebody=
=20
lights "a cigarette," and when the kid writes a poem and sticks it on her=
=20
truck we're left to wonder, is she a ford or chevy kind of girl? (sure, the=
=20
next line could have been "we don't believe in war and we don't believe in=
=20
the lord..." or "we don't believe in the levee...like a watershed, but=20
different...") </sarcasm>
.
4. i have recently re-decided that the new mongrels album not dead yet is=
=20
one of the best albums of all time. everyone who's anyone in the 90s=20
daemon-ig world seems to be on it. i had the vinyl (!) years ago and it's=
=20
somewhere at my parents' house across the country in a box, i suspect, and =
a=20
few months back i re-ordered it (on cd) from daemon's web site and am soooo=
=20
glad. i'd forgotten how much i love it. if it's not in your life let, you=
=20
should really visit daemonrecords.com <http://daemonrecords.com> and order=
=20
it. it's cheap, and it's great to hear amy and emily playing and singing an=
d=20
jamming out with all kinds of countrified rock southern folky mongrel music=
=20
fun. of all the albums i discovered because of an ig connection, that may b=
e=20
the favorite. and since they totally play on it, not just backing vocals on=
=20
a track or something, it's a must!=20
~linda~

what do we want? more igc! when do we want it? now!=20

--i believe it. i saw an ad for rarities in 3 magazines in just the last week alone! first i saw it in the new (aug) issue of jane (of all rags-i mean- mags!), then the new (aug/sept) issue of bust, and yesterday i picked up the new (aug/sept) paste. not only did i see it there, but also a teeny-tiny favorable review for it (it's in print or i'd post it). ;-) now i feel like looking for more. ;-d

paste, by the way, is letting newsstand buyers have a free dvd sampler with it this time around, in addition to the usual cd sampler. woo-hoo!

before this becomes nigc, enough for now.
