hey y'all,

did anyone by any chance record the ig spoof on tonight's saturday night li=
ve?

i was out and missed it (ok, not that i ever do/can watch snl, but
whatever).  and i'm dying to see it.  part of me thinks it's
horrifying, but part of me thinks it can be funny.  i want to see it
for myself...

i can't believe that in all the years that amy and emily have performed as musicians, this is how they are represented on snl.  while it wasn't awful, it didn't do them a lot of justice:  it repeatedly poked fun at their roles as activists.

there were a few attempts at their harmonies in galileo, least cmplicated, closer to fine and maybe one or two more songs.  sheryl crow joined them in one of her songs and at that time, the duo (known for their skill at harmonizing) were off key in "all i wanna do" but would not own up to it.  they insisted it must be her.  after all they've been together for years.

amy was played by rachel dratch and emily, by amy poehler.  these are my favorites of the cast.  they sang pretty well, played guitar, too.

for years, i've been bitter than the real ig have not been guest musicians on this show.  i'm curious to know how everyone else who saw this felt about it.

i did see and it was freaking hysterical.  they really
knew the indigo girls and did a great job poking fun.
i've watched snl since i was little ans if snl makes
an entire skit devoted to someone it means they made
it.  its actually quite flattering to get fun of on
snl :) the  audience was cracking up also through the
entire skit.  it great to see ig recognized at level
finally!!  its a must see and i hope it was taped so
everyone can enjoy it.

they were hilarious!  only people that the general audience would =
recognize would be used for a skit-it does mean they are well known!  =
they made fun of every aspect of the girls they could--complete with =
lots of dogs happily wagging their tails and milling around.  it was =
great!!  lighten up, folks--i'll bet amy and emily will roll with =
laughter when they see it!

yeah, it's like a traffic accident -- you're horrified, but you can't help
but look!

but hey, perhaps this might spark some interest in getting ig on snl.

like when they were a confirmed guest in 1997 and i had a friend @ nbc who
had tixs for me then somehow - their tour plans or something conflicted...

or them doing rosie during my finals week the same year....

but i did see and meet rem on conan - which was a dream come true (even if
i didn't do coffee with stipe - my things to do in life checklist is wierd,
tho i will defend it)

i had a party last night so i missed the show but i bet it was funny. the
show is satire so everything they spoof is always over exagerated. i think
its a great compliment to ig and the skit was probably written in loving
appreciation by the 2 players on snl, rachel dratch and amy poler. i'm going
to have to look out for this episode on the reruns!

as a very longtime viewer of snl (even during those horrible seasons back in the early '80s and early-mid '90s) i am with those who say lighten up, people!!

other "celebrities" who often get spoofed on snl are asked what they think of being parodied on other talk shows, and their answers are almost always, "it's a high compliment to be parodied like that," it means "you've made it..." or something to the effect.

as far as i'm concerned, i am most interested in what amy/emily have to say about this for themselves. if they agree with my aforementioned "theory," then that's cool with me. ;-)

i am even more amazed they weren't parodied when ana gasteyer was on the show years' ago. anyone remember her brilliant cinder calhoun??

and as for ig ever performing on snl, it's more of a longshot than ever--especially if a&e go "indie." my brother has both books about the show (he's a bigger fan that i am--can recite entire skits!), and in the more recent one (co-written by tom shales) there's mention of how even producer lorne michaels has little say over who the musical guests are on the shows. it's all pre-arranged by the major record companies. sheryl crow would have been on with or without her fiance. ;-) it's a rare case for such a worked-out set up these days.

i'm just glad tina fey is back and i bet anything she wrote or co-wrote that sketch! ;-)

the end of my 2-cents...

later~lorna

overall, the ig sketch on snl was harmless. the two main joke points were
their hardcore activism (which was pretty much on the money) and the joke
about how they've been harmonizing forever, so if someone's off, it must be
someone else. it was amusing.

still, the minute it came on, i cringed and hid my face in a pillow. i've
been a huge snl fan for years and this is the first time this has ever
happened to me. :) i just sat there going, "..but they can't make fun of
indigo girls!" i sulked...but watched anyway. :)

the only thing that really pissed me off is that on snl, nobody ever teache=
s
non-musicians how to fake playing their instruments. watching a talented
actress like amy pohler barely touch the guitar just irritated me. :)

their harmonies weren't exactly the same as ig's, but not bad.

jason
