subject: [ig-news] denver show 3/31
[sherlyn's note: this is an excerpt of a message which was originally sent to
the indigo girls mailing list at netspace.org.]
hi everyone,
it's now the morning after.
last night's show was at a brand, spankin' new venue called the co
convention center lecture hall. it's a part of the big conference center in downtown
denver, which makes it very accessible by public transport. ig are only the
second show that they've ever had there. (alicia keys kicked things off
three weeks ago.)
[...]
amy came out and introduced magnapop. during her intro, she asked people to
stand and to move up to the front. for the first 2/3 of the set, nobody
did. finally, with the support of those around me, i got people up and moving.
(the advantages of having 7 people in the front row, center.) it made the
band really happy. it made amy happy. and most importantly, it planted the
idea that it was going to be a standing rather than a sitting up front night.
the openers were kind of a punky, thrashy band. not a surprise that amy
digs them. they had great heart and a good vibe, but their skills were not up
to snuff.
a&e had been watching the 2nd half of their set from the wings. amy came
out to sing the last song with them. with the help of amy, the band, and those
of us up front, we got emily to come out on stage, too. a&e's vocals were
totally buried, but it was great to have them out there. apparently, this was
the last show of the tour, and everyone had been having a good time together
on the road. (magnapop is two women and two men. i'm guessing they're
mostly 30something.)
[...]
a&e came out. those of us frc rushed the stage. people fell in behind us
almost immediately. a&e were stoked. denver is a great market for them. it
was a happy, happy night.
[...]
the show itself was good, as always, but not great. i've come to realize
over the years that i only seem to get a great one every third or fourth show.
i'm always glad to be there. it always feels good. it's always a good
time. but i only get that reinforcement of so good every so often. largely it's
the set list, but also the intangibles.
the set list was as follows:
gone again
fill it up
devotion
po 2
joking!
it's alright
heartache
map
starkeville
woodsong
yield
love will come
shame
?? (set list says let it be me, but they didn't play that. don't remember
what they replaced it with. i didn't keep a list during the show. oh, i
know. it was ctf with the two women from magnapop. that was a fun little
lovefest. tears, last night, etc.)
dq
winthrop
johnny
collecting you
chicken/bitter
mona lisas
galileo
unquestionably, for me, joking was the highlight. ig do the who. :-) it
was fun to have my who buddy lance up front for that one. he's seen them at
lilith (he's mostly a big venue guy), but this was his first proper ig show.
i loved yield, as i always do. and winthrop was really nice. first time
i've seen that on stage. oh, and love will come to you was a real treat.
overall, though, the set list didn't do a lot for me.
before playing it's alright, it sounded as if e was introducing let it be
me. very strange when she didn't play it.
devotion was kind of nice, but for some reason, i really wanted reunion in
that slot.
amy did a great intro for johnny. for all the times i've heard that song,
i've never heard such a substantial introduction. apparently she was really
pissed off at some guy they were working with at the time and she locked
herself in a room and came up with those lyrics. the other half is that it's
about one of her cats. (she's a cat woman with 6 or 7 cats.) this cat, johnny,
was a little terror kitty who almost drove a to valium. soon after the song
was written, he became an outdoor cat. but then, she missed him terribly.
oh, and early in the night, someone requested mona lisas and mad hatters.
they said right off that they could do that one later. yay! [...]
hope you've enjoyed the read. time to get to work.

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo
girls mailing list at netspace.org. this is a dvd of a short film
which is narrated by amy.]
found this on the ak press website -
the latest from the crimethinc 'stable' - this critically acclaimed short
is inspired by the book days of war nights of love chapter, 'l is for
love'. the film narrates the chapter (courtesy amy ray of the indigo girls)
and tells the story of two couples: one that followed the path most likely
to please society, and the other too passionate about life to care what
anyone thinks. music by radiohead and speedy voodoo.
