new notes from amy!
ig's signed a new record deal a few days ago with hollywood records. we are really excited to have
a fresh start and quite frankly, thankful that anyone in the music industry still cares. read

web news from amy!
there have been some disturbing developments in united states' nuclear testing in the nevada
desert - western shoshone territory- an amazing amount of hubris, stupidity, and a total lack of
humanity shown once again by the bush regime. read more:

i am basically keeping "mum" about this, except for what i am about to say here. i know some music biz "insiders" who'd be the first to tell me that some "indie" labels are not what they are cracked up to be. one friend of mine knew a musician who was all set to sign with an "indie" label only to see the deal drop when the owner of the label couldn't come up with the $cash$ to seal the deal. while many indie labels are indeed good ones (righteous babe, krs, dischord, bloodshot, alternative tentacles...) there are many you have probably never heard of that are incredibly "volatile."  anyone remember mr. lady??

i was very concerned about letigre signing to a major label (as well as tori amos continuing with another major label, but that's another story), but they seemed to have gotten greater visibility from it.  i commend their label (universal) very highly for having the courage to allow the anti-war track "new kicks" appear on "this island" with surprisingly little fuss. ;-) other "majors" would have run away from that and tore up their contract right then and there just hearing the demo of that!

this new deal indeed poses questions (that many of you, i am sure, can ask better than i could!). even though i admire them both for their unflinching voices of conscience, they still have a "business" to run (themselves as an act). suffice it to say, it was them as a "business" that prompted them to make the decision that they made. if things do indeed not go in their favor, they can move on--while hearing the endless choruses of their loyal fans (most all of us) singing "we told you so..." at their next shows.

-lorna

same here.  but what can you do?  it is difficult to run your own label or
to go to an independent, when there are labels out there already who have
resources that can do that for you, a little more efficiently.  and i'm sure
amy and emily would not sign with them, unless they had autonomy.  but i
don't know that much about the record industry.

i'm looking forward to the new album, and this summer's tour.  i'll be at
santa monica and san diego--be sure to say hello, if you want!

happy indigo thoughts to you on the beginning of another spring weekend,

diane

i too was very surprised to hear about the hollywood deal. discovered
it accidently through wikipedia earlier this week before the
circulated post.

and who knows how things will trickle down from the top... but there
has been some serious shift in management over at disney. (some might
say regime change.) i've been very impressed by everything i have
seen so far, but i can speak personally only to the film/animation
side of life. let's hope the bob iger* revolution will make positive
change for the music divisions as well.

kate

*bob iger is disney's new ceo, replacing michael eisner. it's too
soon to see but everyone i know that's worked with him has nothing
but great things to say.
