i was watching garrison keillor's independence day celebration on public tv,he fit an ig mention into his show.....meryl streep was there reprising her role in the movie, and sue scott played lily tomlin's character..so...meryl streep and sue scott are talking on and on about how jealous the lennin sisters were of their singing career.....the daughter pipes in, "ever heard the indigo girls?" the two are like "no." and they just keep on talking like they were. i thought it was cute.

finally got the girl(s)!
[picture with amy and emily looking through the frame of light bulbs, you
know the one]

amy ray and emily saliers, the indigo girls, will perform live at the
twilight dance series on july 6 with another folk-rocker, michelle malone.
predictions abound every year for which twilight dance series artist will
claim the title "concert of the summer," and this year one of the strongest
contenders is the july 6 appearance of the indigo girls, one of the most
popular and well-loved duos in the folk rock genre. amy ray and emily
saliers blend luscious harmonies and catchy melodies with the fearless
social commentary typical of traditional folk music. vanguards of the
late-'80s folky singer/songwriter revival, the indigo girls had staying
power where other artists from the same era quickly faded and have a number
of billboard hits and grammy nods under their belts. tops in their genre,
they have enjoyed widespread recognition for several billboard successes
including top 10 hit "galileo" from the platinum album rites of passage, and
"least complicated" from swamp ophelia. true to their roots, they have a
tremendous talent for performing live, and the inspiring energy that they
bring to the stage and their insatiable cult following makes their live
shows amazing and unforgettable.

the indigo girls have been performing together under that name since 1985,
and first experienced mainstream success in 1988 when the female
singer/songwriter movement including suzanne vega, tracy chapman, and 10,000
maniacs cast the indigo girls as "the next big thing." what's so appealling
about the indigo girls is the slack and tension between their musical
styles, . emily saliers is gentler and more musically complex in her work,
leaning towards the abstract and channelling the likes of joni mitchell and
ani difranco. amy ray is a bit more abrasive, providing balance and intrigue
for the listener. on the recording of the raw, rockin' tune "land of canaan"
from the live album 1200 curfews, amy can be heard telling the audience,
""when i wrote this song it was a ballad, and then i heard the
replacements...and then it wasn't any more." active both musically and
politically, the indigo girls champion causes including the environment and
gay and lesbian rights, the rights of native americans and abolishing the
death penalty.

for twilight dance series producer rene engel, and for katharine king before
him, the indigo girls were an annual "ask". agent frank riley of high road
touring has been a fan of the santa monica pier venue for years and has
looked forward to bringing the indigo girls to the twilight dance series
stage, and this is finally the magic year. "amy and emily are like simon and
garfunkle," he says. "the melodies are beautiful, the lyrics are relevant
and substantial, and i think their energy is perfect for a free concert at
the beach. i think the atmosphere and energy down there will be great for
them, great for the audience." the ladies recently signed with hollywood
records as well and have a new album slated to hit stores in september,
making the timing perfect to preview some songs from the upcoming release.
we'll still take the bets, but july 6 is a top nominee for the show of the
season. come down around 7:30 on thursday if you'd like to weigh in, we'll
save a spot for you.

from usa today, ken barnes column

indigo girls and gals

color this pink and deep blue. the indigo girls'
upcoming album, despite our differences, includes the
song rock and roll heaven's gate, with vocals by pink.
check out a clip of their collaboration at the folk
duo's website. the new disc, due in september, marks
the pair's 20th year in recording, though they
recently bolted from longtime home epic to join the
stable at disney-owned hollywood records. amy ray and
emily saliers, currently on tour, have been working
with producer mitchell froom on differences, which
also boasts a brandi carlile appearance on last tears.

okay... um...  wow.

i'm a huge fan of bill maher, and was thrilled to hear the girls
would be on his odd little internet show.  (okay, it's amazon's show...)

i cannot believe how uncomfortable the three of them looked on stage
together.  i don't know if they've never watched him before, and thus
were unprepared for the off-color verbal sparring which is necessary
with him sometimes...  or whether things just started awkwardly and
he couldn't ever recover... or whether he really was just coming
across as a crass asshole with little or no ability to relate to
these particular guests...  *sigh*

the new songs were good although i'm not sure little perennials
really worked as an acoustic duo.  (like i have any idea what the
studio version will be?) pendulum swingers was pretty groovy...

what an odd segment.  it's obvious the entire interview changes when
the word "fantasy" comes out of bill's mouth.  suddenly, it's all
about sex, and nothing else, and nothing bill can do can save the
interview.  he tries to recover, and tries again, and tries yet again...

he should have done better research.  it's a shame, too...  he's
always so outspoken with his support of gay and lesbian issues.  but
he seems to prove over and over that he simply doesn't relate well to
them.  (i've seen him tank interviews like this before, always with
an off-color sexual innuendo.)

okay... </rant>

nice to see a comment about this.  and i thought i was the only big bill
maher fan.  i read graham's email before watching and expected a horrible
scene.  while it was rather awkward, the interview wasn't a total disaster
in my opinion.  i guess i just always thinks it's cool when 2 people i
admire immensely interact with one another.  it was kind of like hearing the
dixie chicks do a verse of ctf at lilith fair years ago.  love both bands
and it's fun when they interact.

i agree that bill does a crap job of showing his support of gay issues
whenever interviewing gays.  he really is a big supporter but always comes
across awkward and makes it sexual.  maybe he's a closet case ;).  i wish
they had sat down instead of doing the interview on the stage while ig held
their guitars.  seemed rushed.  so did anyone see bill at the santa monica
pier?  he said he might go.

i guess i have some faith that it wasn't a total tank since bill stayed and
chatted with the girls throughout all the credit rolling.  in some ways i am
glad bill still comes acros as a dumb, straight, sex crazed frat boy.  if
someone with that description can still support gay rights then it's
definitely a step in the right direction.  bill keeps a lot of straight male
fans with his frat boy antics so maybe some of his support will rub off on
some of his less enlightened fans.

as for the songs, i liked them both although i agree that little perrenials
seemed kind of pitchy as an acoustic set (greg thinks he's an american idol
judge--ha!).  look forward to the studio version.

great to see ig on mainstream public forums as always!.  hopefully bill will
have them on real time, his hbo show.  enjoy the weekend!

greg, who is praying that ig somehow stop in vegas on their way to slc.

having heard little perennials only as an acoustic duo thing (portland
& seattle), i think it works okay.  plus i still have that damn chorus
stuck in my head and i can get out only by humming the "hookers" line
from lay my head down.

hey intimate strangers,

i drove up from san diego after work, so i wasn't fortunate enough to see
michelle malone open for amy and emily.  the traffic was surprisingly
non-troublesome.

after paying seven bucks to park at the pier lot, i walked over, following
the crowd.  security was at the entrance/exits, which i thought was a bit
strange, since it was the indigo girls.  people were wandering around in the
periphery of the crowd.  there were small groups of people sitting down in
chairs at the show, but most were standing.  sulli was feverishly working
before, during, and after the show.  some vips were sitting in the
"mezzanine" level, maybe, a huge box seat section.

the setlist:

closer to fine
yield
fill it up again
devotion
power of two
heartache for everyone
lay my head down
three-county highway
let it be me
shame on you
it's alright
dairy queen
ghost
go
pendulum swinger
little perennials
boat song
chickenman/bitterroot

encore:
baby, don't you break my heart slow
galileo

emily said the release date of the new album is september 19th.
she also said,
"we love free shows!"
"we recorded our album here.  it's surreal having a concert here on the
pier, when i used to run by the ferris wheel every day."
"we want to give love to the people also listening down on the beach.
that's cool ass shit!"

amy must have been tired, because she began little perennials with the
second verse "daughter of--"  she and emily both stopped and amy said
something like that's wrong, that's the second verse.  "oh well, you'll know
it later [in the song]"

amy and emily after singing ghost kept effusively saying, "happy birthday!
happy birthday!" before singing go.  [hmmm, emily's birthday is coming up.]

wardrobe(for those who care) amy was wearing a denim vest over a dark blue
t-shirt and jeans, and emily was wearing a black tee with sparkles on it
over blue jeans.

merch:
the red sleeveless tee with the target "girls live here" on one side, indigo
girls, on the other side, $15
grey t-shirt with the bird on the front, with indigo girls (font from
rarities) $15
brown tee shirt with indigo girls (in a great ?light blue font) on the
front, and a drawing of a tree on the back $20
white tee shirt with same as above design with a little green in it $20

the woman i stood behind had seen the indigo girls once before back in the
90's, and had forgotten how good they were.  i was sitting near the aisle,
and saw tons of babies and little kids, and at least a half dozen dogs.
standing across from me was this one lesbian couple who had an adorable baby
girl--they looked so happy.

you could tell which songs resonated with the pier crowd.  i loved hearing
heartache, the boat song, and the new songs, too.

i wish they had sung ozilline tonight, just because we were under an open
sky.  but, tomorrow will be the same way, too.  as is probably the case with
90% of their concerts this summer.

amy said they would come back to tour in l.a. in the fall when the new album
was out.

with brain-squeezed out-ly,
diane
