for those of us who live in areas that don't receive logo, i suggest going to their website at www.logoonline.com.  there is a form you can fill out and they will send it to your cable provider, requesting it on your behalf.

i have time warner and apparently they don't believe anyone in albany, ny, would watch a gay channel.  but i guess there is a market for the golf channel, the fishing channel, and the military channel.

me and hubby had it for a while...i hate to say it - it was
interesting for like a couple documentaries, but it was really
stereotypical g/l/b/t/q ngltf assimilationist stuff where every gay

my opinion only...

howdy ig fans.  for years i have read posts about how list traffic is way
down and not the same as it used to be etc.  i always brushed these off as
hysteria and people with too much time on their hands to be posting all day
long.  but in all my years on the list, a new album (errr cd--just dated
myself) always resulted in a spike in discussions and thoughts.  despite our
differences was released yesterday and the list dedicated to discussion of
ig music had not a sole post.  so either i somehow got unsubbed by accident
or the list is near death.  i know some people get early copies of the cd so
maybe the joy of a new cd and the excitement of that release day isn't as
exciting for them.  i always try to avoid listening to new songs until i
have the studio versions in hand.  i heard pendulum swinger a few times on
talk shows and didn't like it but, as usual, the studio version is nice.

so any thoughts on the other songs? good signs so far--been listening to it
all day and there's no one song i hate--usually one of those on every ig cd.
i love the rock out heaven's gate song with pink.  i think it's radio
friendly too (outside of the use of fuck in the lyrics).  i really like it
so far.  any other first listen thoughts?

greg - i completely agree with everything you've said. i was also =
wondering why there hasn't been any discussion of the new album. i am =
still waiting for my copy to arrive in the mail as amazon is having some =
delays with the collector's edition that i ordered. aarrgghh.  but i =
have been listening to the whole album via the online logo stream. =
otherwise i would have run out to buy another copy while i waited for =
amazon to get their shit together.=20

i think it's a great album. i like all the songs so far - no "skippers" =
as there usually are for me. i for one am thrilled! i think it was =
produced well (not overdone/over-processed like the last couple of =
albums). so far my favs are pendulum swinger and rock and roll heaven's =
gate. anyone else have thoughts?  hellooooo, anyone out there?

i could not even find it at walmart - the regular cd - not the bonus.

and the target, borders, best buy are all an hour away.

hrmm...the extra stuff wouldn't be on itunes, would it?

that'd be too easy!

just got the new disc today, complete with bonus cd, from barnes and noble.  they had both with and without.  the clerk had to go searching for the version with and it was price $5 higher, so not really a 'bonus" cd so much as an "additional" disc for purchase.

have only listened to first four songs and am struck by how clean the sound is, and how strong the guitars are.  have loved amy's work the past few albums and been very underwhelmed by emily, but on first listen, i believe in love has gotten under my skin already.  the lyrics of pendulum swingers find me nodding along and agreeing with every word!  can't wait to finish the listen through.

pam in big d (which has apparently fallen off the concert planning map used by ig!)

i pre-ordered the collector's edition, and according to the ups, it's
out for delivery today.  it wasn't there at 1:30 when i was home for
lunch, so it'll probably be there when i get home this evening.

i listened to the audio stream a couple of times the other week, and i
liked the songs that i enjoyed at the live shows this summer (and
still dislike "last tears").  "lay my head down" will be going on high
rotation for sure.

i'll write more once i've given the whole thing a decent listen and
look-through.  i'm currious about the packaging.  i wonder if it will
be all that much different from what they did with epic?

as for the death of the list... i saw lots of buzz on the official
bulletin board and the indigo vortex, as well as livejournal and other
places where the fans congregate.  email listservs don't have the
focus and enthusiasm that they used to.

hi folks,

so, it doesn't look like "despite our differences" is going to get an
australian release.  does anybody want to trade with me for a copy of
the version with the bonus disc?  i've got heaps of ig and ig-adjacent
stuff to trade (eg a signed version of gerard mchugh's "more than i",
with the original version of "thin line" on it)...

drop me a note if you're interested.

cheers,
sherlyn

i remember when cons came out how there were posts that read "14 days till " whenever the date was, and the next day "13 days folks,"

yesterday came and well...i've been sick, so i don't have the cd yet, but i've reserved a copy at a local borders, and i plan on picking it up before next monday.

i read something on (was it music today description of dod? i think it was.but correct me if i'm wrong.) the girls were persuaded not to focuss on their "trademark harmonies," by their new producer! :-(

i'm such a big fan of harmony and vocals, and that's why i'm still on the ig bandwagon, but when cons came out....i was very dissappointed....today i listen to it very little, ig had to come and do go live before i relented,
i just have to hear every vocal or i don't enjoy it very much...so all that layering just really....yuck! i hate it.

i've heard little perrenials repeatedly and i like it, and i heard pendulum  swinger live on mpr, and i like it, i feel that it could benefit from more instruements...(i just heard the bare bones accoustic version.)

i just hope that i like the rest of the cd, because i do intend on getting the collector's edition.  and as for the list being dead.....i've agreed with greg flamer for the last few years....we don't have as many discussions here, i wonder if they still have the "news only" list? because that's what we are becoming....it just seems that the only time discussions take place is when someone bothers to give the list a kick in the shins and start one going, or there's an ig event.

i think that what's happened is that nowadays there are more places for ig fans to hang out then there were back in oh....1999. and some key people from this list have lost hope for it's survival and have gone onto other things.i understand their frustrations, but i wish they were still here.

i wonder if there's anything we can do to build this list back up? any suggestions? (i'm not one to complain without wanting to do something about it? i don't believe i have that right if i'm not going to act.).

barb

ps: i think the girls are slowly losing popularity too....sorry to say...didn't amy say "we're not as big as we were?"

howdy ig fans.  for years i have read posts about how list traffic is way
down and not the same as it used to be etc.  i always brushed these off as
hysteria and people with too much time on their hands to be posting all day
long.  but in all my years on the list, a new album (errr cd--just dated
myself) always resulted in a spike in discussions and thoughts.  despite our
differences was released yesterday and the list dedicated to discussion of
ig music had not a sole post.  so either i somehow got unsubbed by accident
or the list is near death.  i know some people get early copies of the cd so
maybe the joy of a new cd and the excitement of that release day isn't as
exciting for them.  i always try to avoid listening to new songs until i
have the studio versions in hand.  i heard pendulum swinger a few times on
talk shows and didn't like it but, as usual, the studio version is nice.

so any thoughts on the other songs? good signs so far--been listening to it
all day and there's no one song i hate--usually one of those on every ig cd.
i love the rock out heaven's gate song with pink.  i think it's radio
friendly too (outside of the use of fuck in the lyrics).  i really like it
so far.  any other first listen thoughts?

this list is way quieter than it used to be, for sure... especially at cd release time.  however, the options at other websites for frequent discussions are almost overwhelming (for me).  i always looked to this list for news, mostly.  sometimes when i don't see it here and i go to other sites, it takes a long time to filter through all the choices before i find what i'm looking for.  i have less computer time now than i used to so i choose to stay here.

re:  the new cd
i got mine yesterday at target (on sale $11.98).  i didn't know there was a collector's edition.  i was searching for my cd player for an hour, and when i found it, i forgot where i put the cd!  then, i found both and the batteries in the cd had died.  (yeah, i know!)

i finally listened to the first 3 songs today and i also really love pendulum swingers.  the sound is outstanding.  i look forward to listening to the rest asap.

a final note:  i watched amy host "newnownext" on logo and was certainly interested in what she had to say, but wished the hour had included one of their new songs!!!!!  are they anti-video?  even just a film of them singing live at a concert would have been a nice touch-showing all those who aren't as familiar with a&e what their missing.  it would have felt more complete if amy could have shared a sample of what she does on this show.

just got the new disc today, complete with bonus cd, from barnes and noble.
they had both with and without.  the clerk had to go searching for the version
with and it was price $5 higher, so not really a 'bonus" cd so much as an
"additional" disc for purchase.

have only listened to first four songs and am struck by how clean the sound
is, and how strong the guitars are.  have loved amy's work the past few albums
and been very underwhelmed by emily, but on first listen, i believe in love has
gotten under my skin already.  the lyrics of pendulum swingers find me nodding
along and agreeing with every word!  can't wait to finish the listen through.

pam in big d (which has apparently fallen off the concert planning map used by
ig!)

ig has been losing popularity since 1995.   that's just how it is.  and they
understand and accept that.  and you know what, i like now that they're kind
of more underground.   it's much easier to get tickets, they play smaller
venues, etc.  i did not like seeing them in huge ampitheaters.  especially
since i was used to seeing them in smaller places from their earlier days.

they have a strong, passionate, always supportive fan base.  to me, that is
so much better for an artist than having a huge wishy washy following that
moves on to other things when the new next thing comes onto the scene.

jsut my two cents.

i haven't listened to the studio version of ps but i like the live version....i agree with practically everything emily's saying in that song.
it spells out my concerns about the church....especially the catholic church, and the need for all inclusive language in our services and teachings....a priest went on ewtn once (last month i think) and argued that the church doesn't need all inclusive language and he was very strong about it too! (he also said that he's been told that he's a bull in a china shoppe! i agree! i was  so mad. i changed the channel!)

on mpr emily said, "and that song (ps) is just about being pissed off at the church." i like that.and the fact that the church (the catholic church anyway.) isn't really doing anything to address the issues, and spur growth. it just wants to keep the status quo you know?

greg - i completely agree with everything you've said. i was also wondering why there hasn't been any discussion of the new album. i am still waiting for my copy to arrive in the mail as amazon is having some delays with the collector's edition that i ordered. aarrgghh.  but i have been listening to the whole album via the online logo stream. otherwise i would have run out to buy another copy while i waited for amazon to get their shit together.

i think it's a great album. i like all the songs so far - no "skippers" as there usually are for me. i for one am thrilled! i think it was produced well (not overdone/over-processed like the last couple of albums). so far my favs are pendulum swinger and rock and roll heaven's gate. anyone else have thoughts?  hellooooo, anyone out there?

the list is dead because ig's music is dead.

ok, not really, but it's my personal opinion that fans have continuously
jumped ship over the years due to the lack of quality in their music.

ig may like to point the finger at sexism and bigotry, but personally, i  see
a huge difference in the kind of music they used to make vs the kind of
music they are making today. the big difference being it's simply not as good.

sure, their music may be "nice" now, but i don't think any of their new
songs are gonna get that "wow" factor from new listeners like their old music
did. call me crazy.

i have to say that i agree to some extent with this.  i haven't
really been blown away by an album of theirs since swamp ophelia.  i
do like bits and pieces of the later ones but each one has at least
3-4 songs that i skip over.

i just received my copy of dod.  i've only listened to half so far.
the only song i really like is three county highway.  however i think
this cd has potential.  i like the rawness of it compared to cons and
by but i feel like, although i think she's a great song writer and i
like a lot of her words, it always seems like most of emily's stuff
could be elevator music these days. as for amy's songs, i think rock
and roll heaven's gate could be awesome if you could hear her voice
rather than all the background instrumentals but overall i think her
song writing has improved over the years.  i don't know, i'll always
buy their cds, always consider myself a huge fan, but i don't get the
excitement i used to get from their music.  i always seem to like any
music better once i hear it live so maybe it'll grow on me more after
the tabernacle shows.

i like the inside pictures of this cd better than the last few.  amy
looks so young jumping on that bed!

so hey,

ryan has a pretty good take on it. the indigo girls are growing up, and so
is their fanbase. with age comes different priorities and different stimuli.

very few pop artists in their forties are able to continue writing music of
the same quality as their earlier work. it's hard to write about being young
and heartbroken when you're middle-aged and settled down. also, when you
have the level of success that the indigo girls have, you don't have to bust
your ass out on the road (or with your songwriting) winning over audiences
anymore.

i suspect, given the choice, amy and emily would happily take what they have
now.

perhaps more relevant to here - email lists are becoming obsolete.
messageboards are easier to follow - and you can ignore threads that don't
interest you. more importantly, messageboards are so much easier for new
people to *find* compared with this ol' list. the downside is that you have
to make the effort to actually go to messageboards every so often - new
things don't just pop up in your inbox.

oh, fwiw, i like the new album it much better than the last couple. no
saxophone. emily's lyrics are better. i like it much better than the last
couple. no saxophone. emily's lyrics are better. i'm sure they'll kick it up
a notch live. i still miss jerry and sara.  i'm sure they'll kick it up a

i have to say i pretty much agree with what neil had to say.  i want to add though, i love the new cd and i also think it is their best work in a few years.  i did like atwli alot but i think by is my least favored cd.  i can't remember the last time i listened to it!!!!   i think em's songs have been pretty lame the past few years but with this new cd she seems to be back.   lay my head down seemed like a classic to me the first time i heard it.   amy's stuff just keeps getting better with each cd.

i also really miss jerry and sara as well.  matt sounds to be a really good drummer though so i'm anxious to see them with the band!

i also agree that messages boards have kinda taken over the listserv.  listserv's are just becoming a thing of the past and not ig.  i have to admit, i miss that april fools jokes that neil always posted.  some of them were really great!

peace!

i've listened to despite our differences a few times now, and i have to say i'm completely underwhelmed.  this album kinda sucks.  don't get me wrong, there are some great songs.  but they're surrounded by what i can only describe as filler.

first off, i love pendulum swinger, little perennials, and rock and roll heaven's gate.  and i like the raw production feel.  but that's where the good stuff ends.

i agree with everyone that emily has been lacking in the songwriting department in recent years, but i suppose it's only fair since she carried the band a lot back in the 90s.  i disagree when it comes to the song lay my head down.  everyone seems to like it, and it's catchy, i suppose.  but it's a song about wanting to take a nap.  and i just can't seem to get myself very amped up about that.  then there's i believe in love, and that song about a bird, and last tears.  i don't know, it just all seems reminiscent of hope alone and free in you.  it's all so trite that celine dion or shania twain may as well be singing these songs.

then there are the amy songs.  i like most of them, but money made you mean seems sort of unfinished, and dirt and dead ends just makes me cringe.

this whole endeavor makes me very sad.  i love amy and emily, and i guess i just expected more out of them.  and i really liked atwli and by.  this isn't a general dislike of their recent material, as some people have expressed.  that being said, dod is still in my cd player, and i'll continue to listen to it.  i'll just be skipping a lot of songs on this one, and patiently awaiting amy's next solo album.

usually the best thing to do is wait until after the show and try to see
them by their bus.  they are usually very gracious and have always been
thrilled to see my friends 7 year old.  they usually stop and talk to her
and sign stuff for her, etc...

hmmm-i'm kind of undecided on this one.  while i admit to not being as crazy
into their music as years past, i am not sure that is due to the quality of
their music or due to priorities as others have said.  i recall buying nis
and rop in college.  these cd's are synonymous with my youth and college
experience.  it was a time of self discovery and ig represented everything i
was going through.  i vowed to attend every concert within a 100 mile radius
and camped out at ga admission shows etc.

now i still get excited to see them and buy their music.  but it's not the
obsession that it was when i was younger.  it seems easy to say that it is
just their fan base maturing and not the musical quality.  but i will admit
to never pulling out cons and i don't even know where my shaming of the sun
cd is.  by has a few songs i plugged into my itunes.  but no new song of the
last 10 years had the play over and over for a year like chickenman or least
complicated or galileo did for me.

my question has always been why their popish songs don't get more radio play
on top 40 stations.  they are catchy and just as good as anything else out
there.  so i think there is still some truth to the sexism and bigotry
stuff.  while their later cd's do have more songs i skip, i think there's
still enough good stuff to make them relevant in the radio world and they
never get played.

and why hasn't a new generation of college aged, self discovering 20
somethings embraced them like my generation did in the late 80's/early 90's?
are they too political?  i mean does anyone know of a fan who got into ig
after 2000?  all non-ig fans i know are aware of them due to ctf, power of
two or galileo--arguably their 3 big hits.  so after writing all this and
reading other's comments, maybe it's a combination of the music quality,
their outspoken political views and an aging fan base.

or maybe i need to go find some message boards and get up to date on who the
new fans are.
i still hope they're together forever and touring into their 60's like the
rolling stones.

i think as far as the list dying out, i think unfortunately it is due to the
progression of modern technology...  the indigo vortex is a very hopping
place, over there i think it's interesting that there seems to be such a
wide range of folks who either love the cd, think it's ok and who really
hate it...

i personally like the set-up of boards better than list-serves these
days...it's easier for me to manage...i can read one thread at a time like a
story, which helps me rember who is saying what about which topic...also
they have nifty quote function which is great when you want to quote a
portion of some one's post...for me the board is a great compromise between
a list-serve and a chat room...

so, as far as the cd:

i am still in the digesting mode...

off the bat, i love three county highway - i've loved this song since the
summer though...i think rock n'roll heaven's gate fucking rocks, but would
have made more sense on an amy solo album...

i generally love amy's stuff on this album...i'm not sure how i feel about
dirt and dead ends though...

emily's stuff for the most part isn't striking me, but it's nothing that i
feel the need to skip (yet)...though i love pendulum swinger and do the ps
dance where ever i may be, whether it's my office, the car, my house, etc...

i'll come back when i've finished "listening" and see if anything has
changed...i also like to reserve final judgement until seeing the stuff
live, and right now i have only seen a handful of these songs live and as an
acoustic duo as opposed to with a full band...

my one hope for the tour is that they do rrhg and that emily wails out
pink's parts as best she can...pink fucking tore it up on that song, and
it's a fun song and would be a damn shame not to see it live...

that's my $.02 for now,
caz

the collectors edition has 2 cd's.  the regular cd, and a 2nd that has
"alternate acoustic studio mixes & live recordings from the 2006 sold out
summer tour".

on the back of the cover it says "place first cd in your computer's cd-rom
drive to access special features".  no special features are coming up on my
computer.  has anyone else found the special features?

i just saw the girls this summer at mohegan sun in ct.   they were great and
if you listen to the lyrics everyone can get something different from the
songs.   poetry put to music.   that's my 2 cents - someone who likes to write
songs - jo

ok, all the talk about the new cd got me to go down and pick up my copy...especially the talk about the artwork. i read the comment about amy jumping on the bed and looking young, i thought,"alright! that's it! i'm going to borders!"

so i took my cd player with, and listened to the whole thing on the way back.....it's okay. not good, but not bad either....it's sort of bland.
that's only because they want  to produce radio friendly songs....i suppose if you want to keep attracting younger audiences that's fine, that's what they feel they have to do.....doesn't mean that us old-timers
have to like it...just means if we want to stay on their bandwagon, we have to put up with substandard lower quality music. (lower quality by ig
standards like on nis, rop,so, and sots.)

when i listen to amy i want to be socked in the gut, like with shed your skin and scooter boys, faye tucker, and go. and this  happy go-lucky whimsical commercial stuff just doesn't do it. that and amy not singing lay my head down, is really a drag too...

emily's got drums on songs that don't need them, ps is not among those. ps
is very lacking on it's bare bones accoustic version. so the drums are good there.

i always have such high hopes for ig....i don't agee with their philiosphy that they have to keep writing predominantly different styles to become better songwriters.....what's wrong with finding a style you really love doing and honing that? they've got wonderful stuff like kid fears (studio version), and pushing the needle, love will come to you, fugitive. if they could capitalize on the round-singing  like on ptntf...they just soar and if they could keep that up...wow! i would be in seventh heaven! i love the rawness....and folks...i hate to tell ya...this album is anything but raw.

i know that ig have been trying so hard to avoid being pidgeon-holed i know, but i think that's an unfortunate reality of the business, and i think it stems from the fact that customers like myself (anyway), i like to know right away what section to find the artist i'm looking for. especially if i'm a newbie. anyway. that's my take  for now...it sounds rather negative i know......i'll probably need to see them live before this gets any better.
