just back- what a great show! too tired right now to write much...but
the highlight for me was amy doing "cordova," which i have never
heard in concert...it was lovely. "bury my heart at wounded knee" and
"cold beer and remote control" were two other outstanding songs.

question for anyone who was there and closer to the stage than i was
(because curiosity is killing me!) - what *was* amy doing when she
turned her back to everyone and wasn't getting a drink of water? it
looked for all the world like she kept taking drags on a
cigarette...but i understood she stopped smoking a while back, and
that would be pretty odd onstage behavior! she was a bit
hoarse...maybe it was some kind of inhaler?

speaking of smoke, what i'll do to see the girls...i am terribly
allergic to smoke. this show was held in a smoke-free concert hall-
inside a horribly smoky casino. i actually went out and bought a
particulate and organic vapor respirator (i.e., a gas mask!) so i
could survive the trip into the concert hall! worked like a charm,
but i did get a few funny looks :>)

she's spraying her throat with some sort of healing spray.  her throat has
been bugging her on this tour.

phew--i am still exhausted from my drive up to l.a. and back down to s.d. on
monday night; luckily, my friend stacy drove us up to pala last night.  i'll
try to write a mini-review tomorrow.

love and peace,
diane

i had gotten home at 2a.m. early tuesday morning from the drive down from
l.a.  walked around like a zombie all throughout my work day.

my friend stacy had told me about the pala show going on sale--she knew i
liked their music, and bought the tickets that morning.  also, she offered
to drive because she knew i would be tired from the l.a. drive.

the last time i brought a friend to see ig was the summer of 2005; she was
okay with it, but she probably wanted to go home about halfway through the
show.  it's always so crazy trying to introduce the chemistry that is ig to
a neophyte.

instead of going up early to hear bitch sing, we actually ate at a thai
restaurant in san diego to avoid the traffic on the 15.  we arrived a little
before half past eight, and walked in the concert hall just as amy and emily
took the stage.

now the last time i saw a concert at a casino was train at pechanga.  they
have this awesome 1000-seat venue.  i also saw train at viejas casino, but
that was an outdoors (pretty chilly!) concert.  so i didn't know what to
expect from pala casino.

after getting our tickets at will call, we went in, and if you can imagine
20 foot ceiling banquet rooms three of them together, so the audience is
like a fan around the stage.  the "dancers" gathered at the leftmost side,
and also in the middle aisle.

they opened with the same three songs as the previous night, but i didn't
jump up and act all crazy with my dancing this time!

here's the setlist again, courtesy of spike from indigovortex.com

pala, california @ the pala casino events center (14 nov 06)

little perennials
pendulum swinger
heartache for everyone
power of two
three hits

i hadn't heard i believe in love, cordova, and bury my heart live before
(okay, maybe once before for bmh), so those were highlights for me.  of
course i loved hearing the wood song.  it takes me back to when i listened
to so over and over again, besides yeah, thinking about the relationships i
have in my life.  i was singing the end of bmh; i loved hearing the bang of
the drums and the harmony of the vocals.

it makes me sad because i don't know when amy and emily will play with a
band again.  argh!

amy started singing cordova, and then stopped after the first stanza because
she forgot the words.  then she had a little conference with emily--indigo
huddle!  then started the song again.  it was cute.  first, a few months
ago, the goof in starting little perennials--and it ended up on the video!
and this now.  sometimes, we get so caught up in the emotion, that the
things we've memorized just get stuck in a corner.

each night, when they ended the show, the band got with amy and emily and
bowed in synchronicity.

so long, amy, emily, claire, carol, matt, sulli, and rest of the crew until
next tour!

diane

p.s. yay! stacy liked them in concert.  not a convert, but a start.

winks and laughter all around,
d.

hi folks,

here's an article about a new benefit compilation.  not sure of the version=
of
"dairy queen" on here is the studio version or the live one...

the article's online at:

musicians band together to benefit youth - november 17, 2006

this november, sarah dougher=92s independent recording label, cherchez la=
femme,
will release the safe haven for smyrc compilation cd to benefit the sexual
minority youth resource center (smyrc). the cd features both national and=
local
acts such as the indigo girls, the decemberists, and pink martini who=
donated
their songs to support this unique and crucial program for the portland=
area=92s
sexual minority youth.

=93i feel when a musician chooses to make their life =91public=92, that person
immediately has a social responsibility to use their visibility for change,=94=

said the decemberists=92 band member chris funk. =93by including ourselves on=
this
cd, my band has chosen to stand up for an organization that is crucial for=
our
city's children and young adults.=94

funk, and other artists, went beyond contributing music to the project by
helping to design cover art, publicize the cd and coordinate events.

since 1998 smyrc has provided a haven for lesbian, gay, bisexual,
trans-gendered, and questioning (lgbtq) youth. the cd brings together a
diversity of artists including well-known local acts ashleigh flynn and=
sneakin=92
out, now-defunct electro pop stars le tigre, folksy spoken word hero alix=
olson,
internationally known post-lounge band pink martini, northwest rock giants=
the
decemberists, and classic lesbian duo indigo girls. safe haven also features=
a
track by sleater-kinney, which gives this post-breakup cd the distinction of=

being one of the band=92s (and le tigre=92s) final releases.

=93i=92m 19 and have been attending smyrc for three years,=94 says one smyrc=
youth.
=93smyrc is important to me because in all honesty it has saved my life. it=92s=

given me a safe place where i can go and not have to worry about people=
calling
me names or telling me that who i am is wrong.=94

at smyrc, queer youth under the age of 24 can sink their teeth into=
expressing
creatively through art, writing about their life experiences, learning how=
to
cook healthy food, becoming a leader, and various activities that give them=
a
chance to support each other, learn from mentors and find a sense of=
belonging.
