it's back to true-blue at indigo girls concert

albany -- "we're like the little engine that could, y'all."

that "y'all" was telling. it was drawled by emily saliers, the fair-haired
half of atlanta's fiery folk rock duo, indigo girls.

the remark was actually in response to amy ray's self-deprecating remark,
"that's why we're not in the pro leagues" -- which was, in itself, in response
to a harmonica glitch that forced ray to temporarily halt "dairy queen."

the indigos, of course, have been in the pro leagues for a good long time.
judging by the response of their albany fans, though, you might have thought
indigo girls were the newest, hippest thing.

classics like "galileo" and "land of canaan" sat alongside recent additions to
the catalog, like the sweet southern soul of "moment of forgiveness" from
2002's "become you" and the show-opening "fill it up again," from 2004's "all
that we let in."

the present tour is sort of a back-to-the-roots affair for ray and saliers in
that they are once again performing simply as a duo, sans their regular
backing band.

but the purely acoustic material -- which featured six- and 12-string guitars,
banjo, mandolin -- was only the major part of saturday's story.

as things wore on, the indigos invited guests onstage, including their
piano-playing bus driver, rick, and the very electric members of opening act
three5human.

three5 vocalist trina meade joined in first on the indigos' breakthrough 1989
hit, "closer to fine." so did the eager, standing crowd.

what a sound!

human, a four-piece atlanta rock band, also delighted the crowd with an
opening set that was both fierce and melodic.

for "jenny," meade and crew were joined by saliers, but they didn't need her
cache to win over new fans. by that point, the crowd was already in the band's
collective back pockets.
