subject: amy mini-concert review

hey all,
.
. i went to the "riffin' in the round" event last tuesday at eyedrum in
atlanta. the bill was amy (solo acoustic), three5human (trina and tomi),
athens boys choir (katz), scott turner schofield, and novelist t.cooper.
.
. it was sponsored by daemon records, charis books, feminist outlawz and
(was simulcast on the internet?) by riot grrrl, ink.
.
. the venue, eyedrum, is a small art space. maybe 100 people in the
audience. i've been there a few years back to see some film/talk about jack
kerouac. some few art pieces on the wall that weren't particularly
interesting (e.g., a series of prints of people wearing stocking caps over
their faces).
.
. the event was put together by schofield (as a benefit for a transgender
organization?) or just to promote transgender awareness.
.
. before things started, i assumed "scott" was a slender woman (andro
haircut with a female gait). When things started, scott explain he was a
transgender man and took off his shirt and pants to reveal panties and
breasts wrapped in a velcro-type tank top garment. his performance art was
telling various stories based on a feel-a-wheel handout given to the
audience with various words "male", "queer", "out", etc. with corresponding
numbers. people were supposed to call out a phrase, which was then
converted to a number and he told a story based on the number. it was kind
of gimmicky and the stories didn't particularly seem all that closely
related to the phrases that people called out, frankly.
. the stories were things like the time he auditioned for a male part in a
play, got the part and then they asked him if he had a problem doing nude
scenes at which point he was forced to out himself much to the surprise of
the director.
.
. i was sitting next to a woman dress in an evening gown who said she heard
about the event from the femme mafia (an online community for femme
lesbians). she explained that somehow scott was a valued member of their
group.
.
. katz is a spoken word trans man artist. the last time i saw abc (which
was a duo then), he did a piece that was an ode to his "boobies". this time
it was "all i want is a man who can deal with my vagina". (trina from
three5human got a kick out of his catchy chorus: "for real though, i got a
dildo.")
.
. t.cooper read from his novel "lipschitz 6" which was some elaborate
pseudo-autobiographical tome about an immigrant jewish family who lost one
of their siblings when they came to ellis island and became convinced that
the long lost boy grew up to be charles lindbergh. somehow that was also
woven into a connection to eminem, which t. used to channel as a d.j. doing
bar mitzvah's growing up in nyc. (i can't even begin to explain it.)
.
. three5human was good as usual, but i've heard "jenny", "pure lust",
stevie Wonder's "frontline" plenty of times from them now. amy sat in and
sang backup for one of their songs.
.
. amy did "measure of me", "driver education", "blender", "let it ring",
"on your honor" (with 35h) and a couple of new songs, "???" and "free and
clean", which was pretty good.
.
. at one point, i had to pee but i discovered that the bathrooms had been
"liberated" and been declared "gender-free" (since there were probably 5
penises in the whole place.) i don't even like peeing next to men with
penises all that much and now going to the bathroom had become a political
statement. so i held it until i got home.
.
. just your average tuesday night.

you think i'm vulnerable to your pressure tactics because i shed a tear.
all the hatred in the world is what got me here today,
but i know that love is gonna set me free.

thanks diana and to the many other listers who have
offered their support!  tina is progressing everyday.
she has been breathing on her own for 4 days and all
of her vital signs are very good.  she has not
regained full conscious, but can recognize visitors
and waves her hands sometimes as if communicating.

one of the most heartening things was when i played
some music for her she started tapping her foot in bed
to the rythym!!

if anyone would like to send cards they can be sent
to:

tina malloy, patient
the john sealy hospital, sicu, 2-b
second floor
the university of texas medical branch
301 university boulevard
galveston, texas 77555

thanks again for your love and support!
