zootunes kicks off on a rousing note with indigo girls, carlile

special to the p-i

the skies were gloomy sunday and the headliner, the female-friendly indigo
girls, didn't seem an obvious father's day booking. nonetheless, the 24th=
season
of zootunes got off to a rousing start, an intermittent light rain only=
slightly
dampening the enthusiasm of a crowd that long ago had sold out the Woodland=
park
zoo meadow.

celebrating two decades of recording together, the folk-rock indigo girls --=
the
blue-jeaned emily saliers looked quite the folkie, while amy ray took the=
rocker
role in black leather pants and a t-shirt that read, "i've been to=
graceland" --
used their trademark harmonies and an ever-changing set of acoustic guitars,=
as
well as mandolins and a banjo, to demonstrate the "power of two."

sunday, the indigos were even more empowered, as brandi carlile, the maple
valley singer who has been touring with the duo that inspired her, lent her=

impressive voice to several songs. (in a recent interview, ray recalled=
meeting
carlile for the first time at a performance at the sonic boom record store=
on
capitol hill. "i love her, as a person and a songwriter and a performer,"=
ray
said.)

With a zootunes show of her own next week, carlile ceded her opening slot to=

enjoyably quirky singer thao nguyen, who came across as a more animated cat=

power, and her three-man band, the get down stay down. but carlile joined in=
on
saliers' delicately sad "last tears," as she had on the indigos' current=
album,
"despite our differences." later, saliers and ray harmonized on carlile's=
patsy
cline-mining "cannonball," featured on carlile's latest, "the story."

carlile also took over michael stipe's original role in the three-part round=
of
"kid fears," while the trio's most telling collaboration was a quickly=
worked-up
version of bob dylan's "don't think twice, it's alright."

the topical spirit of dylan's early '60s protest songs lives on in the=
indigo
girls, who drove home the message on the likes of saliers' attractively=
strident
"pendulum swinger" and ray's harmonica-braced "become you." even in the=
upbeat
"shame on you," its sunny "la la la" chorus enhanced by the leis the indigos=

received from their fans, ray found a moment to comment on the ongoing
immigration debate.

is there anyone out there who can possibly record this either straight from
the radio or the stream?  i'd do it, but i won't be anywhere near my
computer at 2pm mountain time.  indigo girls + brandi carlile = heaven, and
i'd love to have a recording of this one archived.

it's over but mp3's were made, but are not online yet.

and while i do have my recording online, it is a tad incomplete and i'd
rather it not be polluting the trading pool, the only reason i uploaded
it was in case the person who got it fully wanted to compatre sources.

it should be announced tonight.

review: indigo girls and brandi carlile

article last updated:06/20/2007 08:14:10 am mdt

i'm going to suggest something radical here, a concept that the indigo=
girls
fans filling the duo's sold-out show tuesday might find outrageous.
after two decades of impeccable harmonies, outspoken political activism=
and
excellent songcraft, it might be time for the indigo girls to expand their
membership.
i don't say that because amy ray and emily saliers are lacking anything=
in
their own fine shows and albums. but after seeing them play with opening act=

brandi carlile both during her set, and for much of their own, the indigo=
girls
and carlile seem like a perfect match.
seattle songstress carlile turned in an excellent half-hour of country,=
rock,
soul and blues, a perfect appetizer for the indigo girls. songs like "the=
story"
showcased a set of pipes on carlile that rival k.d. lang's, while her cover=
of
johnny cash's "folsom prison blues" showed a righteous country kick in her
voice. after ray and saliers joined carlile for some stunning three-part
harmonies on carlile's "cannonball," she closed with a brilliant solo take=
on
leonard cohen's "hallelujah."
carlile isn't an easy act to follow, but the indigo girls aren't an easy=
act
to open for, either. their next bad show will probably be the duo's first;=
they
are consummate pros who play with passion and always remember to throw a
"thanks, y all!" to the crowd between songs.
With ray and saliers trading lead vocals and switching among guitars,
mandolins and banjos through their set, songs like the opening "pendulum
swinger," "devotion" and "it's alright" all hit their marks early on. just
before launching into "three county highway" from last year's "despite our
differences" album, ray paid tribute to the active audience filling the=
garden.
"you have the most expressive dancers of anywhere!" ray proclaimed. "it s=

beautiful."
"shame on you" showcased the indigo girls knack for delivering political=

messages in hook-laden songs, while "get out the map," played with banjo and=

mandolin, showed off the duo s roots-music influence.
carlile joined ray and saliers for the last seven songs of the 21-song=
set,
lending a powerful third voice to the girls' patented harmonies and creating=

something new out of tried-and-true tracks like "kid fears," the massive
singalong of "closer to fine" and an encore that included "tried to be true"=
and
the closing "galileo."

Who: indigo girls and brandi carlile
   When: tuesday
   Where: red butte garden
the bottom line: mesmerizing harmonies, rock-solid songcraft and an ace
opening act make for a memorable sold-out show.
