subject: patti smith at boulder theater (no ig)

i went to see patti smith tonight.  ever since it was announced, it's  been
on my calendar.  i wasn't willing to pay full price ($30), but i was  intending
to go hustle for a ticket outside.

then i got an email from alan mck earlier today, encouraging me to  go.  that
kept me from blowing it off in the home stretch.

after about 20 minutes, i scored a $15 ticket.  i was hoping for $10,  but i
wasn't unhappy at $15.

instead of going in, i went to meet karen and a friend for a dinner.   i
missed the first few songs, but that was ok.

the boulder theater is a converted movie theater that holds about 900
standing.  i was in the stairwell above behind the front floor.  that  means i was
the equivalent of 6th or 7th row, raised up above the crowd on the  floor.  i
was center section (right in front of lenny kaye).  good  enough.

it's the second time i've seen patti.  the first was in 1996 at the
previously mentioned a3 summit.  she did a meet and greet at the hotel in  the
afternoon (it was the only time i've seen these jaded radio professionals  all agog).
then that night she played at the fox along with paul  Westerberg, keb mo,
and patti rothberg.  i liked it, but it didn't  captivate me like the it did
some other folks.

tonight was a good show.  it didn't make my top 10 (or even top 20)  non-Who
shows i've seen this year, but still, i'm glad i went.  she's an  interesting
combination of punk, intelligent, irreverant, passionate, and  approachable.
she's simultaneously ugly and adorable.

at one point, i thought that she reminded me of a female neil young.   at
another point, i found myself thinking of the buzzcocks.  she's a  different side
of punk - less rocking, more angsting, but still both she and her  band and
the buzzocks are punks who have survived and thrived.  does that  make any
sense?  (and fWiW, the buzzcocks at sxsW might make this year's  top 20.  maybe
even top 10.  i'd have to look!)

by about 10:00 (1:45 in), i was toast, having woken up at 5 on six hours of
sleep.  as i was thinking of going, i panicked and thought, what if they  play
my gen?  missing that would just be no good.  so, i headed back  to the sound
board, and i found me a setlist.  no my gen, but it looked  just compelling
enough to keep me around.  it was good, but i was  disappointed in smells like
teen spirit.  the slow tasteful intro was  really good, but i really wanted
them to sooner or later kick out the jams, but  they never did.  (Where are you,
proof?  We miss you here in Who  world.)

ok.  that's it for me.  hope you enjoyed the read.  below is  the setlist.
i'm just typing what it says.  i don't necessarily know  the songs.

i'm embarrassed to admit that as a new jersey native, i've seen patti live only once. but from what i read on a Wxpn radio bulletin board, it was one of her best shows ever. it was at Wiggins park in camden, nj, part of the Wxpn music fest a couple of years ago, and she was extremely proud that camden was hosting this event, because the city has been on such hard times for so long. one of my favorite moments was when she commented about how bunkered-down things were around independence hall across the river in philly, but thank goodness that one could still visit the tomb of Walt Whitman in camden without impediment!
for all of her sometimes-rough-gruff exterior, i was very moved when she accepted her rock and roll hall of fame induction this past year. she was so touched by this honor that she was almost in tears. she was very humbled to be inducted.

i was watching "the singing bee" which is a fairly new show on nbc where
contestants have to know the lyrics to songs in order to continue on in
the game.
anyway on monday they were doing "girl power" night.  one of the songs
they had people fill in the lyrics for was ig's closer to fine.
i thought it was pretty exciting.
of course the contestant did not know the lyrics.
