indigo girls look for the commonalities

by mikel toombs
union-tribune

june 3, 2007

despite their differences, the indigo girls remain a true-blue duo after two
decades together.

on their new album, despite our differences, emily saliers and amy ray
continue to alternate writing credits. saliers opens the album, the indigos'
10th, with pendulum swinger, a pointed political statement with an attractive
pop sound; ray is just as passionate on her starkly personal portrayal of a
wasted life, dirt and dead ends.

but when saliers and ray put their voices together, the connection is
unmistakable.

i think there's a big difference in the quality of our voices, and the
intricacy of parts and images. but the certain sound that we have when we sing
harmonies, it's probably never going to change, ray said by phone from her home
in georgia.

we're so different from each other, but we're always able to come together and
make a record and make it work, together. we were thinking about that and we
were thinking about the world, the idea of being polarized and being able to
come together and find commonalities.

ray and saliers first found common ground in decatur, ga., in the mid-1980s.
basing themselves in atlanta, the duo updated the singer-songwriter tradition of
bob dylan and simon & garfunkel with the 1989 major-label debut album indigo
girls. the record featured closer to fine and kid fears, where the indigos
were joined by michael stipe of r.e.m., which then called nearby athens home.

the indigos' sound blossomed with swamp ophelia, released in 1994, the same
year that saw their participation in a gender-bending version of andrew lloyd
webber and tim rice's jesus christ superstar. titled jesus christ superstar:
a resurrection, the production featured saliers, who often writes on religious
themes, as mary magdalene and ray as the title character.

long active in the gay and lesbian community, the cause-oriented ray and saliers
in recent years have championed honor the earth, described as a
minneapolis-based nonprofit dedicated to energy justice within the native
american community.

the indigos help their own cause on despite our differences, which features
ace session drummer matt chamberlain, by their choice of producer, veteran
mitchell froom. we knew we had to work with somebody different, just to
challenge us, ray said, to bring in a new perspective and change it up a
little bit. and i think his perspective, when he started working with us, was
that he wanted to have a lot of economy, around notes and sounds.

ray takes on a different kind of economy, that of the music business, on perhaps
the cd's angriest track, rock and roll heaven's gate. every (bleepin') d.j. is
telling me i'm free, ray sings. free to be a loser / free to be a trend / free
to be a backlash, over and over again.

it's a bit startling to hear such fire coming from a 20-year veteran, who
records for hollywood records and headlines tomorrow at humphrey's concerts by
the bay.

it came from the world i exist in separate from emily, ray said. i do
independent music, too, put out solo records and work in little communities,
punk-rock communities, where i see bands that are very inspirational to me break
up and not able to make it, for one reason or another. and it was kind of a
tribute to some of those bands, my friends.

ray relates to such on-the-edge bands, she said, partly because emily and i are
not that successful. it's relative. we tour for a living; we wouldn't be able to
ever stay at home for more than a couple of months. we don't make a living off
our records and it's a struggle, but we're glad to be doing it, and glad that
we're still able to do it.

we see the ceiling. we see the way we haven't been able to make a mark
sometimes. but we keep doing it because we don't really care.

the indigos spread the joy around on differences, recruiting distinctive young
singers (and fans) pink and brandi carlile. having already made her mark on the
pop charts, pink she now goes by p!nk, as if her outsize presence weren't
enough had the indigos sing on dear mr. president, found on her album i'm
not dead, and the girls returned the favor with heaven's gate.

the duo was impressed enough with carlile, who sings on differences closer
last tears, to have the breakout, seattle-area talent open the current tour.

i love her, as a person and a songwriter and a performer. her voice is a gift
from god, from whatever god there is, ray said. hopefully, this will be her
year.

hello intimate strangers!

what a terrific concert tonight.  we felt it was a little shorter, the
setlist tonight, but we're not complaining! =)

thao nguyen and her band opened.  [...]

on to ig:

emily entered stage right first, in a brown t-shirt with the pencil outline
of two wolf heads, and blue jeans on.  amy then came in with her light blue
short sleeve button-front shirt with an white angel or flower imprint on
each shoulder.  i remember her pants as being black and white--or something
similar.

the crowd cheered loudly when they came in.  we had such energy in the
show--emily and amy sensed it and emily commented on it.

pendulum swinger
little perennials
hammer and nail
world falls
become you
get out the map
power of two
three county highway
lay my head down
devotion
fill it up again
dairy queen
you and me of the 10,000 wars
land of canaan
the boat song
jonas and ezekial
closer to fine

encore:
starkville
galileo

emily said that one of her sisters said that she's a little upset that her
daughter, emily's niece, knows how to say "fuck it" because of pendulum
swinger.  emily smiles and shrugs, and amy says, "no harm done."

they added a song on the setlist--i don't know which one, but they mentioned
it to sulli after little perennials.

a couple of women were seated in the second row--and one of them wrote on
two postcards "she said yes".  emily asked, "as in 'will you--'" and the
woman nodded.  amy and emily said their congratulations.  (and this was a
few songs before power of two.)

oh, sulli broke her thumb.  initially, she was not diagnosed with a
fracture, and then it healed wrong before they found out it was actually
broken.  someone in the audience said, "give her a raise!"  and ig said,
"okay--we'll give her a raise--we'll discuss the terms later--" we laughed.

amy mentioned that they just came from being in new orleans a few days ago,
to check on the progress there.  she mentioned how strong the people there
were, and also that they were going to participate in a benefit concert in
september to raise money and awareness.

my favorite songs of the night were you and me of the 10k wars, jonas &
ezekial, and world falls.  though i always love become you.

i haven't stood through almost the entire ig concert in a loong time.  it
was wonderful, and good to dance--yeah!  after the concert, i was able to
get a guitar pick.
