the filmore charlotte
a very nice new venue opened june 2009 in a strange, but cool warehouse
district with several clubs and music venues all next to one another.b
it's a
large space, completely remodeled with four bars and four large chandeliers
down
the center.b a&e both commented on what a nice place it was.b it can hold
2,000+.
this night 1,300-1,400 people per staff.b sro.b more mixed crowd than
asheville.b lots of older, married folks.
opener: maia sharp on acoustic guitar, accompanied by a female on electric
guitar (never heard her name).
maia plays very soothing, laid-back type folk.b they were pretty good,
although things stayed low-key during her approximate 30 minute set.
i stayed in the back and middle of the venue during the opener. my plan
was
that people would disperse away from the stage during the break, to go to
the
bathroom, smoke, get refeshments, etc.... unfortunately, no one moved.
pretty
much everyone held their ground! damnit! ;) however, i did secure a spot
on
the corner of stage right, which was a great location about 12-15 feet from
amy
and maybe 20 feet from emily!
a&e came on at 9:20~
same dress for the girls at the show as in asheville, except that amy wore
dark
grey pin stripe pants. they were both wearing black boots. overall, the
charlotte show was several notches lower in crowd energy than asheville,
and
chastain (not yet reviewed) was about a notch lower in energy than
charlotte.
that's not to say the shows were not great, because they were. it's
probably
just due to the fact that asheville is such a fucking cool place! :) :)
julie wolfe on accordian and keyboards
set list:
1. love of our lives
2. sugar tongue
3. fill it up again
4. heartache for everyone
5. what are you like
6. ghost of the gang
7. power of two
8. gone again
9. fleet of hope
10. become you - the south/confederacy song; i won't stop seeking common
ground!
11. fly away
12. shame on you w/ julie on accordian
amy almost began to start singing the song, but said "naw, y'all sing it!"
this caught all of us somewhat by surprise and the audience didn't carry
the
first verse very well... i've never seen them have the audience begin a
song
before?!?
note: i had suspected this before, but it became clear to me during this
song
that amy seems to re-live each song as she sings them. you can see it in
her
eyes, expressions, and knowing smiles! i think that is one of the reasons
the
songs seem so fresh...
13. get out the map - good audience participation!
14. go
15. digging for your dream
16. driver education
17. i'll change
18. johnny rottentail - woo-hoo! always one of my favorites!!
19. virginia wolfe - another nice surprise! very well done :)
20. kid fears - the audience did a bang-up job of singing on this one!
21. closer to fine with maia sharp
encore:
22. second time around - "don't compromise unless it feels good inside;
might
as well have some pride!"
23. galileo
i met a lot of great folks both during and after the show... sarah h.
danced
in front of me all evening and had the ig spirit more than anyone i saw
that
night! she said her husband was too sick to make the show. sarah was a
real
sweetheart, albeit a bit tipsy ;)
"it takes a lot to keep it going. it takes a lot to keep it real."
after the show, me and a dozen or so women waited by the bus, which was
unusually parked right next to the front entrance of the venue.
i met several really nice people -- christy, barb, and a few others whose
names
i didn't get, while waiting for about 45 minutes.
amy came out by herself and everyone else, except barb who already knows
amy
and me, got their autographs and pics taken with amy. i just wanted to
shake
her hand and talk to her for a few minutes and make a request for the
following
night. the first thing she said to me was "thanks for coming to the show
tonight". she seemed happy and in a good mood.
julie came out also and was real friendly with everyone. maia sharp was
loading her truck but didn't venture over to the crowd.
i left and went to my car about 200 yards away in the parking lot and when
i
pulled out i ended up right behind the tour bus heading back to atlanta. i
guess emily made a dash for the bus after i left. if i didn't already have
a
hotel room in charlotte, i might have just followed them to atlanta for the
show
the next night -- ig gps, haha! ;)

the orange peel, asheville, nc
opening act: michele malone
sro, mixed, younger crowd, mainly female (big surprise! ;)
mm's set was short, only 6 songs, but it was a rockin' kind of country/
appalacian/bluesy type feel. malone plays a bad-ass slide guitar!
there was a guy playing bass and a really cute and talented drummer, katy,
23
years old.
i am not familiar enough with michele's songs to give a run down.
there was a boy in front of the stage and it was his 13th birthday. the
audience sang happy birthday to him and then michele sat on the edge of the
stage in front of him and soloed a song for him!
michele said they just arrived back from touring europe.
amy was off-stage watching the last song. emily later said, "michele
malone,
ain't she fuckin' amazin'!"
a&e~
both wearing black shirts, amy in red plaid pants and emily in jeans.
amy said she loves playing asheville, because it's great company!
amy commented several times during the show on how well the audience was in
tune in their singing and it was true! i guess my singing was drowned
out...lol!
as always, the crowd was extremely receptive. lots of smiles from everyone
and
exhuberant joy in the house! probably about 300-400 folks; the place is
relatively small.
julie wolfe on keyboards and accordian.
set list:
1. love of our lives
2. sugar tongue
3. least complicated
4. reunion
5. power of two
6. driver education
7. what are you like
8. never yield
9. love's recovery
10. new amy song? lyrics included, "fourth of july", "moment turns to
spring",
and "took a long time to find" (anyone???)
11. get out the map
12. digging for your dream
13. shame on you (with michele malone) -- great!!
14. i'll change
15. heartache for everyone - super reggae beat!
16. fleet of hope
17. second time around
18. the wood song
19. land of canaan (amy fucked up the lyrics and it was pretty funny)
20. ozilline
21. closer to fine - amy gave the audience smiling applause!
encore:
22. starkville
23. galileo
amy was sooo into the moment and the music. a&e both seemed to thoroughly
enjoy
themselves.
this was my third visit to asheville and i am more convinced than ever that
asheville is one of the most awesome places in the world! it is even
cooler
than austin :) i can hardly wait to move there.
btw, i asked sully if the girls had been playing "nashville" recently and
she
said it had not been in the rotation for awhile.
the next night i saw them in charlotte (review forthcoming). i got to talk
with amy after the show and requested that they play either fugitive or
nashville in atlanta, and she said she thought they could do fugitive. i
am
keeping my fingers crossed.
it's been pouring rain all day today in atlanta and the show is at chastain
park (outdoors). i have my poncho and umbrella and heading that way
directly.
peace and love to all~

after they sung (3 songs, i believe) emily said she didn't want to sing
anymore, because their voices were so good, and they were amazing!!
16. chickenman!/bitterroot (the charlotte audience would be pissed as they
requested that song about 17 times last night, with no luck!)
b b b during the bridge, amy did a little shuffling chicken-dance up to the
microphone, which was very cute :)
17. watershed - a bit of a pleasant surprise for me!
18. romeo & juliet - i'd never heard this before live (or fugitive)
19. fleet of hope
20. kid fears with matt nathanson - matt did the solo part beautifully!

when she slipped and one of her flip-flops went flying about 30 feet
away.b it
took 5 people about 20 minutes to find it and she was much relieved!

encore:
